9 Bad Habits That Are Affecting Your Immunity

While there is no cure for the virus, building immunity can be an effective preventive measure you can take along with the vaccine to ensure that you remain healthy.   1. Not Getting Enough Sleep: Adequate sleep helps the body rest and prepare to fight infections, bacteria, viruses, and other triggers. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your body doesn’t have the chance to fight diseases as effectively,  Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep daily to keep the immune system at its prime.
  2. Lack of Exercise: Exercise plays a significant role as this is a very powerful stimulant of the immune system. It enhances the ability to create antibodies and T-cells, which are white blood cells that help the body fight disease.   3. Poor Nutrition: Quality of food is very important and often overlooked cause of immune depletion. Our food supply contains many unhealthy, toxic chemicals which can cause havoc in our bodies. Over time, this depletes the immune system, and if not corrected, will continue to get worse.  It can also cause you to be overweight, a condition that makes you more susceptible to disease.   4. Stress: High-stress levels can create a hormonal imbalance in our body, weakening the immune system and making us more susceptible to illness. Stress produces the hormone cortisol which impairs the function of infection-fighting T-cells. To de-stress and stay healthy, we must exercise for 30 minutes a day or practice deep breathing and meditation— all these can diminish the effects of stress.
  5. Excess Alcohol: Regularly overindulging in alcoholic drinks can have a negative effect on our immune system. Drinking too much can wear away the linings of our mouth and oesophagus. It also makes our white blood cells less effective at attacking harmful bacteria and lowers our body’s ability to produce cells that identify and kill bacteria and viruses.  
  6. Smoking: damages the first lines of defense, the linings of our mouth and our nose, which are actually part of our immune system. This makes us more susceptible to cold and flu. Our lungs can be very badly affected by smoking. Coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma are just the start. Smoking can cause fatal diseases such as pneumonia and lung cancer. Smoking causes 84% of deaths from lung cancer and 83% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  7. Not Drinking Enough Water: Our body needs water for every function it performs and so does our immune system. It needs proper hydration to function. Water flushes out harmful toxins and helps our body fight off infection. Plus, it affects our energy levels and even the quality of our sleep. Drinking 3l of water regularly helps one stay well hydrated and healthy. 
  8. High Sugar Intake: Sugary snacks are also bad for our immune system. The blood cells need vitamin C to fight off viruses and because glucose (from sugar) is so similar in structure to vitamin C, when we ingest too much sugar it actually starts competing with vitamin C for space in our immune cells. Thereby limiting our intake of sugar can help to keep our immune system fighting fit. To satisfy your sweet tooth, eat a piece of dark chocolate or dates or sweets made from jaggery. 
  9. Frequent Use of Supplements: A proper balanced diet provides us with all the essential nutrients. We should opt for supplements only when excessive deficiency is seen and it must be stopped after having a prescribed dosage. Too much of supplements may interfere with normal bodily functions, leading to side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, gastrointestinal issues, fatigue and probably mild nerve damage.

Should You Wear A Mask While Exercising Outdoors?

Exercising OutdoorsThe pandemic is far from over but it hasn’t stopped people from stepping out to get in a quick run or an outdoor exercise. If you’ve been vaccinated, chances of contracting the illness is slim but not negligible. So, the question remains, if you’re heading out, should you wear a mask while exercising outdoors? 

Should You Wear A Mask While Exercising Outdoors? 

Wearing a face mask while exercising outdoors helps prevent the spread of the virus, but it can also lead to breathing difficulties. When you are running, jogging, doing any activity which increases your respiratory rate, the oxygen requirement goes up several times and you need to inhale that much more air to deliver the required oxygen to the body. 

A mask can restrict airflow in and out of the mouth and nose, creating a situation where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange are compromised. There’s a possibility that you may not be able to fulfil the increased oxygen requirement when exercising with a mask on. There are chances of inhaling the exhaled carbon dioxide. This can create health complications, especially in people with weaker lungs, chronic bronchitis, asthma and other health complications.

Symptoms You Might Experience While Wearing a Mask and Exercising Include: 

  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Breathlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

Precautions To Be Taken While Exercising Outdoors 

Though it is important to wear a face mask in an enclosed space where social distancing may not be possible – like when going out for work, when using public transport or at grocery stores, restaurants, malls, etc. but when it comes to exercising with a mask on, be cautious. 

  • Listen to your body: You may feel fatigue faster due to a mask, so do not push your exercise limits.
  • Don’t ignore any of the symptoms mentioned above or any other difficulties and put a  break on your exercise immediately.
  • Wearing a face mask or not is a matter of social distancing. For someone walking/running and alone outside where social distancing is maintained, a mask isn’t required.
  • Try exercises where you use the same spot. For instance, stationary cardio workout – you can pick a location where there aren’t any people around. 
  • Keep your distance and be mindful of others. Keep as much space between yourself and others as possible or bring a mask with you and put it on when needed. You can also put a face covering down around the neck and pull it up over your face if you encounter someone.
  • Opt for a breathable, well-fitting face mask. Too tight can make you feel uneasy. 
  • Masks become wet when you wear them and can lead to skin infections. If you’re using a reusable mask, wash it regularly to prevent the build-up of bacteria.

Everyone is talking about it and it’s terrible! 

How You Can Avoid Panic During The Pandemic 

As humans, we crave for stability and we are facing this uncertainty for more than a year now. Are you wondering when it will all end? Do we even see an end in sight? How do we deal with it?  covid-19 anxiety

Change Your Mindset!

The stress can cause frustration, worry, fear, helplessness, lack of hunger, overeating, tiredness, sleeping too much, headache, nightmares or the inability to focus on work. If you are overwhelmed due to this pandemic situation, let me tell you that you need to overcome this. When you panic, your body responds in the same way. If this is the battle, then half the battle is lost when you panic. When your mind gives up, then slowly your body gives up. 

Everyone has suffered a cold and blocked nose at some point or the other in their life. And you experience breathlessness in such times. People with Asthma deal with breathlessness many times. Before the pandemic, you used to get cold, cough and fever, but you didn’t think that you would die. Then there’s no need to think that way now. I am not suggesting that you ignore the symptoms or your health. By now everyone knows what they need to do for their safety. I Am not repeating here. I am talking about the mindset. How you deal with this mentally and emotionally is important. 

You can get the information you need but stop binge watching news channels and be conscious of what you read, watch and listen. You can make a habit to get the update at a specific time from a trusted source only. Other times, keep yourself involved in something meaningful.

If you get a cough, start a treatment or medicine for the cough. You can talk to your coach for a nice home remedy. If things get worse and you need to get admitted in the hospital, let me repeat, the first thing you need to do is stay strong emotionally.

What Can You Do Now?

Let’s start working for the things which are in our hands. Your immunity is so much more important right now than ever before. Cut down sugar slowly from your diet. Sugar has inflammation enhancing properties. It supports more mucus production in the body, which increases the chances of you getting infected easily. When I say sugar, I mean sugar from tea, coffee, biscuits, desserts, ketchup and all kinds of packaged food. It’s difficult but start making changes one by one. Taking action for better health is much better than taking stress. 

Regular exercise will help to beat the anxiety. Work to improve your lung capacity. If you have a habit of smoking, please stop it. Breathing exercises are a great way to improve your lung function. You can breathe better. Spend a good time for meditation regularly. It will reduce your anxiety. If you are not fond of it, then indulge in any of your hobbies, which you can pursue at home.

You will help a lot as an individual by NOT spreading fear. Stop discussing the topic with ten people. Don’t forward random whatsapp messages. Stay calm and keep calm. If possible, provide emotional support to those who are going through it. If you can help them in any means it would be great. We are physically apart, but you can stay connected with your loved ones like friends and family through calls or video calls. Provide the emotional support. Having a conversation with friends and family will help to reduce your stress.

Remember that we’re all in this together. So remain calm, observe your body and stay strong. How To Stay Safe From Infections During Navratri

This year’s Navratri is going to be both special and totally different since it is going to be celebrated amid a worldwide pandemic. Even though we all want to celebrate and enjoy after being locked down for the past few months, there is an apprehension in our hearts of getting infected. If you’re confused about what to do, we have a few tips to help you protect yourself and your loved ones during Navratri! 

How To Stay Safe During Navratri 

  1. Have enough calories from healthy food, including lots of different colored vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, dairy, pulses, and legumes in small and frequent meals at regular intervals. Also, make sure that you eat food items that are easy to digest.
  2. Stay hydrated: Water intake can be challenging during fasts. Water cleanses our body and adequate hydration levels can help maintain the health of mucous membranes and decrease irritation while coughing, sneezing, and even just breathing. It helps flush out toxins/pathogens. So, hydrate yourself with plain water, coconut water, lemon water, kokum water, lukewarm milk, buttermilk, fruit smoothies, etc.
  3. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can affect how fast you recover from illness and your susceptibility to infections. Throughout our sleep, the immune system releases proteins known as cytokines that have protective properties against infections/inflammation, and sleep deprivation can decrease the production of these protective cytokines. Hence never miss 7-8 hours of sleep.
  4. Continue with physical activities like walking and yoga. It increases blood circulation which also expedites the circulation of antibodies or WBC’s and facilitates their reach to the site of infection efficiently and facilitates recovery. Regular physical activity also helps reduce stress, which can be a major contributor to compromised immunity. 

How To Prevent Exposure to the Virus (As per WHO)

If I am attending a small gathering or an event, what precautions should I take to protect myself and others from getting infected with covid-19?

  • Always check local regulations before attending an event.
  • Stay at home if you are feeling unwell.
  • Always comply with the following 3 basic preventive measures, 
  • Maintain at least 1-meter distance from others, and wear a mask at all times.
  • Cover a sneeze or cough with a tissue or bent elbow and immediately dispose of the tissue in a closed-lid bin. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or with a hand sanitizer.

If I am organizing a small gathering or an event, what precautions should I take to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among guests?

  • Always check local guidelines before planning your event.
  • Brief guests about precautions before the event starts; during the event, remind guests of these precautions and ensure they are followed.
  • Choose outdoor venues over indoor spaces – if indoors, ensure the area is well-ventilated.
  • Minimize crowding by staggering arrivals and departures, numbering entries, designating seats/places, and marking the floor to ensure physical distancing between people of at least one meter.
  • Provide all necessary supplies to attendants/participants – hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, closed-lid bins, distance markers, masks.

What You Must Avoid Doing 

  1. No calorie-dense fried, sweets, gravied foods  
  2. No starving: Do not stay hungry for long as starving releases the stress hormone cortisol, which can suppress some immune responses. So, if you are planning a fast, it is important to take care of your health and plan your meals at frequent intervals.
  3. People who are ill and with certain chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiac disease, kidney disease, breathing difficulties/asthma/sinusitis, etc., and including those with Covid-19, must be exempt from fasting.
  4. Avoid the 3 Cs: Spaces that are Closed, Crowded or involve Close contact. Outbreaks have been reported in closed, crowded indoor settings where people talk loudly, shout, breathe heavily or sing. In such environments, the virus appears to spread by respiratory droplets or aerosols more efficiently, hence, taking precautions is all the more important.

This year, because of the global pandemic sweeping across all the globe, we will have to do our part, to curb the spread of coronavirus. Hence, enjoy the celebration of the festival responsibly and judiciously!
