Suneeta Mane Goes From Stagnant To Unstoppable!

Suneeta Mane

Health conditions arising out of lifestyle or hormonal imbalances can seem like a death sentence. These health conditions not only affect your wellbeing but also your mental health and it can seem like a bottomless hole you can’t crawl out of. But that’s not true. If you are determined, you can not only crawl out of your predicament but go way beyond that to serve as an inspiration for others. Our Player Suneeta Mane is a shining example of what you can achieve with consistent efforts, determination and lifestyle changes!

Life Before GOQii

Suneeta Mane is a working professional based in Mumbai. As she works for a large corporation, her job is quite stressful. Along with the work-related stress, she also struggled with stagnant weight, inch gain, fatty liver, acidity, constipation, skin irritation, acne, bloating and hypothyroidism for which she was under heavy medication. She was also trying to manage her PCOS.

She first encountered GOQii when a friend requested she gift him a tracker. “I was also keen on getting one tracker for myself but, I guess, I was not ready then,” she said. “In 2017, I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid and was put on 50mg Thyronome tabs. But this thyroid created havoc in my life – it came with additional problems like acne, fatigue, constant irritation and I found my overall health deteriorating. Medicines gave me temporary relief, but after that, the symptoms would erupt again. I had never eaten a tab for any minor ailment either. I hate consuming tabs but here I was – I had to eat tablets if I wanted relief. To add to all this, my work is also stressful. I had to do something to normalise my life. So after a year, I joined GOQii in 2018.”

Making Lifestyle Changes and Going Beyond!

When Suneeta Mane subscribed for personalized health coaching, her immediate goals were to lead a healthy lifestyle to improve her condition, get rid of medication and get back to normalcy. Her GOQii Coach Yogita Sharma prescribed alternative methods, a diet plan and some “me time” which would help her relieve stress.

“Slowly within a month’s time, I began finding relief. The Acne had reduced as well. The best part about GOQii is that the problems in my health were being addressed from their roots,” she said.

Her GOQii Coach Yogita Sharma suggested very basic lifestyle and dietary changes which included:

  • Timely meals and portion control
  • 3 hour gaps between dinner and sleep
  • Fermented Rice and/or vegetable juice in the morning
  • Combination of Cardio and Strength workout
  • Being active throughout the day
  • Consuming at least 4L of water a day
  • Including more fibre in meals along with a high protein diet
  • Meditation, gratitude and affirmations along with yoga

With a few more lifestyle changes, Suneeta Mane began seeing positive results. She also claims to be a die hard fan of GOQii’s Emotional Wellness Expert Divya Thampi. She watches one of her videos everyday on GOQii Play. She says, “Divya Thampi’s sessions on Mental Health have really helped me in bettering my mental health as well as my personal development. Her sessions on stress management, setting realistic goals, etc. have been very useful!”

Apart from lifestyle changes and her interactions with her GOQii Coach, she also took Doctor Consultations and says that they were fantastic. She had once developed an allergy and the GOQii Doctor prescribed simple suggestions that helped her instantly.

The Results Of Her Dedication & Determination

Over the period of 4 years, Suneeta Mane managed to lose 6 inches around her waist and now weighs 56kg. As per her latest reports, her Thyroid levels are well within range and she doesn’t suffer from Fatty Liver any more.

Constipation, Bloating and Acidity issues are no longer there and she has no issues related to PCOS. Her skin is also clearer. Her overall energy levels have improved and she feels fresh throughout the day. Apart from major achievements in physical health, she also said that her mental health has improved significantly and she has a new positive outlook on life.

  • Her achievements during this time are uncountable. Some of them include:
  • 8 days trek in Kedarnath (whereas before, she had only started with 2km walks)
  • Trekking the Sahyadri Hills in Maharashtra
  • Indulged in 300ft rappelling near Malshej Ghat
  • Won 2 beauty pageants while competing against women as young as 18 years while she was 33. She says that no one could guess her age. The most recent one being around December 2021 – Fashion Icon – it was held in Thane.
  • Prior to that, she won the title of Maharashtra’s Goodwill Ambassador in October 2021. As a goodwill ambassador, she had to raise 1 Lakh – but she managed to raise INR 1.10k for Delhi based Ladli foundation and this fund was used towards building more awareness about Menstrual Hygiene.

Giving Back To Society

That is not all to her, as she and her brother also run a social organisation named after her mother. It’s called Pad-Mini Foundation and it’s based out of Airoli in Navi Mumbai. They have been investing in this organisation with their own money.

The foundation works towards Sanitary Napkin awareness and distribution, skilled based classes for underprivileged girls and women in and around the Airoli Slums. According to Suneeta Mane, “Skilled courses makes one financially independent, even though they do not get education, also menstrual hygiene is a must for women.”

From our interactions, we have learned that Suneeta is not just a name, she is “Unstoppable Suneeta” as time and time again, she has proved herself. With every event she has bounced back stronger, with an even stronger zeal to learn and try new things.

She says that the GOQii ecosystem is a perfect gift to give! All the coaches have been great, and her current Coach Yogita Sharma has been super helpful. Recently, she spoke about her Healthy Story at length with our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal as a part of GOQii Health Stories. You can watch the entire conversation here:

Manage Stress By Managing Your Cortisol Levels!

Manage Stress By Managing Cortisol LevelsHow often do we hear people say, “I am so stressed”? Given the current pandemic scenario, the lockdown and the threat of new variants, we’re sure you might have heard a lot of people say this. While the stress is reasonable, do you know what causes it? Is it the pressure of working from home thwarting your work-life balance, is it the news or could it be the excessive release of stress hormones? If you weren’t aware, just as there are hormones that make you feel good, there’s a stress hormone called Cortisol but it’s not all bad.

The cortisol stress hormone management system is released by the adrenal cortex glands in order to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and the immune system. While it does regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and the immune system, if it is released at a wrong time, it can be harmful. What triggers the rise of this crucial hormone is mental and physical stress, insulin spikes, too many stimulants, overindulgence of processed food and toxicity build up.

Sources Of Chronic Stress Include:

  • Lack of sleep and insomnia
  • Negative thoughts and emotions
  • Sugar cravings and low serotonin levels
  • Caffeine and stimulant abuse (more than 2 coffees per day)
  • Acidity and Toxicity
  • Lethargy and lack of energy

Burning stubborn belly fat has to be one of the most popular stresses that people have and most have a problem dealing with this issue. What we fail to identify is that losing body fat, especially on the lower abdomen, is a hormonal issue.

It’s NOT overeating!

It’s NOT sugar or carbohydrates!

It’s NOT lack of exercise!

The one culprit that can quash your fat burning efforts and leave you with stubborn belly fat is your cortisol and adrenaline hormones. Stress leads to adrenals burning out, and excess cortisol and adrenalin lead to a number of health problems. If prolonged, it can lead to:

  • Excess abdomen fat
  • A serious drop in testosterone, and rise in estrogen
  • Hypertension and anxiety
  • Bone, mineral and muscle loss (cortisol is a catabolic hormone and is often elevated)
  • High blood sugar and insulin resistance

How Can You Bring Cortisol Levels Under Control?

stress managementGiven how high stress levels have been lately due to the pandemic, it is important to manage stress by managing spiking cortisol levels. Dealing with Cortisol can be tricky. If dealt with proper techniques and supplements, one can get the Cortisol levels under control. Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Reduce physical and mental stress by becoming more calm and relaxed. Meditation and pranayama are your allies.
  • Exclude sugar and processed foods from your regular diet and replace them with whole organic foods that will help improve digestion and in turn, reward you with a healthier GUT!
  • Lower toxicity and acidity which adds stress to the body internally by making the simple shifts in the food choices, thoughts and emotions.
  • To take control of Cortisol levels, one needs to learn how to unwind and relax every single day for at least 20 – 30 minutes and learn to take deep breaths and clear the mind. You can also indulge in a hobby you like!
  • Meditation and yoga are some excellent ways to relax and bring down cortisol levels effectively.
  • Exercise is a true savior and has been shown to reduce cortisol effectively. But a word of caution – don’t overdo it and do it correctly or else it could have the opposite effect.
  • Cortisol is at its lowest during sleep. So, make sure you get adequate and good quality sleep. This Sleep Series could help you understand your sleep better.

Additionally, it’s best to steer clear of news and social media updates that stress you out. You can check it once a day to just get an update but there’s no point in indulging in every news article that comes your way, especially if it paints a grim picture. So zone out, take care of your health, keep calm and be stress-free!

We hope this article helps you during these precarious times. For more on stress management, check out Healthy Reads. To learn how to manage stress effectively, ask a GOQii Coach by subscribing for personalized health coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

Rahul Pandit Gets Off Medication & Gets Healthier With GOQii

Rahul Pandit

Being healthy involves a lot of factors other than just exercise. You need to watch what you eat, get quality sleep and manage stress effectively as well. These pillars are essential towards leading a healthy life. Our Player Rahul Pandit learned this when he joined GOQii.

Life Before GOQii

Rahul Pandit is a 30 year old working professional. While he had the necessary knowledge on exercise and how to keep his body in shape, he didn’t have the right knowledge on maintaining a healthy diet which led to issues such as weight gain.

Weighing around 80kg, he was exercising regularly but at the same time, he suffered from hyperacidity. Every time he felt uncomfortable with acidity, he visited a doctor and was given medicines for reducing acidity but this fix was only temporary. He says that, “No doctor tells you how to take care of yourself. My eating habits were also wrong. I used to eat at odd hours and have long gaps between meals. I used to eat lots of junk food!”

Making a Positive Lifestyle Change With The Right Guidance

After watching a GOQii advertisement featuring our brand ambassador Akshay Kumar, Rahul Pandit was inspired to rectify his health. He bought a GOQii tracker with a 3 months personal coaching subscription which changed his life.

After interacting with his GOQii Coach, he realized what his routine lacked. His coach began introducing new habits to his list which included:

  • Consuming lukewarm water with Saunf and Ajwain Seeds
  • Eating at regular intervals while keeping an eye on portion size
  • Breakfast was compulsory
  • Fixing meal timings
  • Eating evening snacks
  • Eating an early dinner

These small habit changes did wonders for Rahul. He says that, “These habit additions and getting over old habits have been good for me”.

With regards to fitness, he had to cut down on fat – so his meals were low on calories, low on carbs and protein was just as much as his body required. Earlier, he wasn’t aware of how much protein he should consume but got some clarity after speaking to his GOQii Coach.

As of now, Rahul Pandit is free of hyperacidity. He manages his stress well and his body is more toned, minus the fat layers on his stomach area. After almost 2 years, he is off medication and is getting healthier day by day.

What Does His GOQii Coach Have To Say?

Rahul Pandit has been with us for almost 2 years. When he joined GOQii, he wanted to be fit and healthy but was dealing with hyperacidity. Thanks to his focus, dedication and being true to himself, he has come a long way.

He now has no acidity, is off medication and is focusing on getting healthier. Certain habits which we worked on together and got results included:

  • For acidity, Ajwain and Saunf water helped
  • Replaced refined flours to whole grains
  • Acidity was being triggered by junk food and regular bakery products. So, Instead of having biscuits in the evening, he was now having fruits, sprouts or coconut water
  • Did Sugar Detox for a week
  • He also suffered from disturbed sleep. To improve sleep quality, we introduced the 4-6-8 pattern of breathing which helped. Also, no Gadgets close to bedtime
  • Different type of workouts were also introduced gradually to help him build endurance and stamina

The best thing about him is that he believes in a holistic, 360 degree approach to health and lifestyle. Shortcuts are not for him! Few months back he went to Leh Ladakh, where he did very difficult treks back to back for 3-4 days, covering 15-20 kms daily in that kind of altitude. This speaks volumes about his health, dedication and approach to lifestyle!

How Antacids Are Making Your Heartburn, GERD or Acid Reflux worse!

antacidsIf you’ve ever suffered from heartburn, Zantac and Ranitidine might have been your knights in shining armor and if you’ve never had the misfortune of going through this, the aforementioned Over-The-Counter (OTC) drugs are used to cut down the production of acid in the stomach. There are many other OTC antacids such as Gelusil, that neutralize the acid in the stomach. While self-prescribing for relief from heartburn or GERD, have you ever considered that these antacids might actually be making your condition worse?

What is Heartburn or GERD?

Heartburn or GERD is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest. This burning sensation is caused due to the acid reflux that happens when contents from your stomach move up into your esophagus (food pipe). Most of us associate this with high stomach acidity and reach out to over the counter antacids for quick relief.

Heartburn or GERD is not caused due to high levels of stomach acid. The incidence of heartburn and GERD increases with age, while stomach acid levels generally decline with age. Just as studies show acid secretion declines with age, it is also well established in scientific literature that the risk of GERD increases with age. In fact, when stomach acid is measured in people suffering from heartburn and GERD, it is almost always low, not high.

Why Do We Get Immediate Relief From Antacids?

I agree, symptoms of heartburn and GERD are caused by stomach acid refluxing into the esophagus. What’s crucial to understand is that any amount of acid in the esophagus is going to cause problems. That’s because the delicate lining of the esophagus isn’t protected against acid like the stomach lining is. You don’t have to have excess acid in your stomach to have heartburn.

Also, symptom relief doesn’t imply that the underlying cause of the problem has been addressed.

Stomach acidity may not be the actual reason for your heartburn. Instead, the prevailing scientific theory is that GERD is caused by a dysfunction of the muscular valve (sphincter) that separates the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach. This is known as the lower esophageal valve, or LES. The LES normally opens wide to permit swallowed food and liquids to move down easily into the stomach. If LES is working efficiently, stomach acid will not enter your esophagus. If the LES is malfunctioning, as it is in GERD, acid from the stomach moves up back into the esophagus and damages its delicate lining. It doesn’t matter how much acid there is in the stomach. Even a small amount can cause serious damage. Unlike the stomach, the lining of the esophagus has no protection against acid.

What Causes the LES to Malfunction?

Increase in Intra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) can cause your LES to malfunction. Acid reflux occurs when pressure causes gastric distention (stomach bloating) that pushes the stomach contents, including acid, through the LES into the esophagus. Overeating, obesity, smoking, bending over after eating, lying down after eating, and consuming spicy or fatty foods may be contributing factors.

How Do Antacids Make This Condition Worse?

Malabsorption of carbohydrates leads to bacterial overgrowth, resulting in increased Intra-Abdominal Pressure which drives reflux. Low stomach acid, as caused by your antacids, can contribute to both bacterial overgrowth and carbohydrate malabsorption.

One of the chief roles of stomach acid is to inhibit bacterial overgrowth. But when stomach acid is insufficient and the pH of the stomach rises above 5, bacteria begin to thrive. Stomach acid (HCL) supports the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates by stimulating the release of pancreatic enzymes into the small intestine. If the pH of the stomach is too high (due to insufficient stomach acid), the pancreatic enzymes will not be secreted and the carbohydrates will not be broken down properly.

The fermentation of carbohydrates that haven’t been digested properly produces gas. The resulting gas increases IAP, which is the driving force behind Acid Reflux or GERD.

FDA Cautions Against Common Heartburn Drugs

In September 2019, FDA has communicated about the detection of an impurity, which is a carcinogen (cancer-causing agent), in common heartburn medications (ranitidine, commonly known as Zantac, and nizatidine) available over the counter or by prescription. Several countries have banned these medications.

Minimise or avoid use of OTC medications. Use proper lifestyle modifications to manage and treat your symptoms. Reducing bacteria loads and limiting carbohydrate intake have both been shown to greatly improve, and in some cases completely cure, acid reflux and GERD.

We hope this article helps you make the right choices. Do leave your thoughts in the comments below. For more sessions on how to ease GERD and Acid Reflux, check out Healthy Reads or ask a GOQii Coach by subscribing for personalized coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr
