6 Lifestyle Changes For Acne-Free Skin

acne-free skinWe all yearn for clear, glowing, blemish-free skin! There’s no denying that smooth skin has mass appeal. If smooth skin were the protagonist of your story, acne would certainly be the formidable foe!

Acne is basically a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples. It can lead to redness and dull skin. Risk factors include genetics, menstrual cycle, stress, anxiety, humid climate, using oil-based makeup, out of home foods, etc.

Once developed, acne requires a lot of patience to fade away. Hence, you need to be religious towards the efforts.

Make smooth skin a reality with these 5 lifestyle changes which can help you reduce or prevent acne!

No Refined Carbs & Sugar

Bid alcohol, soft drinks, desserts, bread, ice-cream, sugar, maida, etc. a good farewell! As they have a high glycemic index, it can lead to high blood sugar and high insulin levels. This might result in inflammation, which is one of the prime causes of acne. High sugar intake along with acne can lead to dark circles, loose skin, and wrinkles, etc. So go low on sugar.

Drink More Water

Skin cells require water to function properly. According to research, acne is more likely to develop when your system has more toxins. Water helps flush these toxins out. Though water is not a miracle cure but it definitely helps in fighting acne.

Physical Activity

Exercise boosts blood circulation and promotes sweating, which helps the body push impurities out of the pores, reducing acne. Physical activity helps us reduce stress levels, which inturn aids acne prevention. Just make sure you clean up before and after a workout.

Get Quality Sleep

Do you wake up fresh and energetic in the morning? If you don’t get good, restorative sleep, your body might not feel rested. This could start the cortisol surge, which can put you at risk for more acne. Make sleep your priority and give your body the rest it needs and your acne a chance to heal.

Eat Your Colors

Yes! Eat all the colourful fruits and vegetables. They help us improve vitamin levels and antioxidant intake which keeps the skin clear. Eat dark leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots, beetroot, berries, papaya, etc. on a daily basis.

Eat Healthy Fats

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are required to keep your skin healthy. They help prevent skin dryness and help you maintain healthy and hydrated skin. Healthy fats are the building blocks of cell membranes. Hence, add walnuts, fish oil, flax seeds, avocado, sunflower seeds, etc. to your diet.

Some handy tips for good skin:

  • Wash your hands once you wake up before touching the face
  • Use fresh towels and handkerchiefs daily
  • Always remove your makeup completely
  • Clean your phone on a regular basis
  • Do not sleep without washing your face

Healthy Evening Snacks

food-nuts-peanuts-39345

It is 4 o’ clock in the evening and you are thinking about what to have for your evening snacks? Something which will serve the taste buds and is healthy too. Right?

Also, you’re “hunger hormone” levels rise and your “satiety hormone” levels drop in the evening. Hence it is important to bridge the gap between your lunch & dinner with a filling evening snack. Also, this habit will help you keep your dinner lighter which is ideal.

So if you’re bored of having fruits, buttermilk, nuts, peanuts, chana, etc. for your snacks, here are some easy healthy options to quench your hunger.

open sandwich

1. Open bread sandwich: Take 1 slice of multi-grain bread, apply green chutney to it and arrange slices of tomato, potato, cucumber, beetroot, etc. on it. And do not close it with one more slice of bread, just shred some Paneer to it and enjoy the fibrous meal.

rice oats cutlet 2. Rice oats cutlets: if you have leftover rice from lunch, try this out. Take 1 cup boiled rice and add ½ cup of       roasted oats, add some crushed salad or finely chopped vegetables like onions, cabbage, carrot, beetroot, etc.             Add some ginger chilli paste, salt, garam masala, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Make small flat cutlets out of this batter and roast with some oil on a pan. Enjoy them hot with green chutney or curd.

masala khakra

3. Masala khakhra: take 1 khakhra and add finely chopped tomato, onion, cucumber and coriander on the khakhra. Squeeze some lemon on it and sprinkle rock salt on it. Quick and best.

date oats ball

4. Dates oats Ladoo: take 1 cup of seedless dates and crush them with a fork, add ½ cup of roasted ground oats, 2 tbsp of honey or jaggery and 2 tbsp of mix nuts powder. Best energy supplier. You can carry 2 of them along with your lunch tiffin to have in the evening.

mix fruits with curd

5. Mix fruits with curd: give some variety to your regular fruits with this. Take 1 cup of mix fruits of your choice, add 1 cup of yoghurt or hung curd to the fruits, add 1 tsp flax seeds, 5-6 crushed walnuts and 1 tsp of honey.

peanut chaat

6. Peanut/chana/ mung chat: boil pulse of your own choice, add finely chopped onion, tomatoes, carrot, capsicum, etc, squeeze some lemon juice on it and sprinkle some rock salt and garnish with coriander seeds. Best to satisfy your hunger hormones.

spinach omlette

7. Spinach omelette: If you are an egg lover and want some variety, try this one. Blanch 1 cup of spinach in hot water and transfer it to cold water. Take 2 eggs, add the spinach, 1 tsp of ginger chilli paste, and add salt and some black pepper. Make an omelette in a pan and enjoy it hot.

rotipizza

8. Roti Pizza: Oh yes! Take your wheat roti and apply pasta sauce if you have or ketchup and chilli sauce mixture. Add chopped onions, tomatoes, olives, lettuce, olives, and all the veggies you find in your fridge. Top it with cheese, panner, chilli flakes, oregano, mix herbs and bake it in the oven or on a pan. Enjoy.

Abbreviations: 1 cup = 200ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml.

Healthy Eating: Sauerkraut (Fermented Cabbage)

sauerkrautNothing is more important and essential than maintaining immunity and proper gut health. If you are seeking good immunity and gut health, you should definitely try this Sauerkraut recipe. While it originated in China over 2000 years back, it is very popular in Germany. It’s basically chopped cabbage that undergoes anaerobic fermentation and gives you major health benefits. It can be a side dish to your main meals or you can add it to your meats and sandwiches.

What You Will Need:

  • Raw Cabbage – 1
  • Mason Jar – 1 (750 ml to 1 L)
  • Pink Salt or Normal Salt –  1-2 tbsp

How To Prepare:

  1. Take a medium sized cabbage and remove the outer leaves and keep them aside. Cut the cabbage into 4-5 pieces and remove the white core.
  2. Shred the cabbage or chop it in a food processor. We need it really thin and finely chopped.
  3. Take a big mixing bowl, add the cabbage to it.
  4. Add the salt. Salt will stop the breathing of any unhealthy micro-organism and will start the formation of lactobacillus bacteria which will help us in this fermentation.
  5. Mix the cabbage and salt well with your hands for a few minutes and then keep it aside for 7-10 min to allow the brine to ooze out. Let it set in the bowl.
  6. Pound the cabbage for a few minutes to allow any more liquid to ooze out, hit it well.
  7. Take a glass jar which is clean, freshly washed and pack the cabbage very tightly.
  8. Clean your hands and start keeping the cabbage in the jar. After adding some, take a wooden spatula or glass and push it in to avoid any air pockets between the cabbages. Repeat the process till the cabbage is over.
  9. Now, take the outer cabbage leaf and tuck it over the cabbage kept in the jar just like you are covering it hard to not allow any air.
  10. Next, add the brine we collected after mashing the cabbage, leave the top 1 inch of the jar free, do not pack it with brine tightly.
  11. Close the lid of the Mason jar (it is okay to close the jar not very tight so that the cabbage can breathe) and keep it in a bowl, there are chances of liquid oozing out after fermentation starts.
  12. Keep this for 3 days and then you can refrigerate and eat it. It should be a bit yellow and tangy.

Highlights of the Sauerkraut Recipe

  • Eat this with every meal to improve digestion and add in good microbes.
  • It has a very long shelf life and a great way to boost immunity.
  • 70-80 % of your immunity is located in your gut and hence, it is very important to keep an eye on what you are eating. This is the best probiotic, just like curd, to help you with it.
  • Sauerkraut is enriched with nutrients, minerals and a lot of fiber. Apart from boosting immunity and digestion, it can aid weight loss, helps in stress reduction, improving brain health, may reduce risk of cancer and promote good heart health.
