In a fast-paced world that rapidly drains us of energy, it is extremely important to be in the best of shape! In that pursuit, we are constantly searching for an elixir that will give us good health with least efforts.

What if we told you that you can have more energy, focus and overall good health? What if that magic elixir exists? More so, what if it is a fruit that you already know?

If you haven’t guessed it already, we are talking about the Indian Gooseberry or as it is popularly known – “Amla”. Since ancient times, it is used to cure various ailments, even if it is something as simple as aiding digestion to something as complex as fighting Diabetes and Heart Disease.

The Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis or phyllanthus emblica) derives its name from the Sanskrit word “Amalaki”. This tree is a native of India and the neighboring South East Asian countries. The fruit is sour in taste but leaves a sweet aftertaste.

Let’s take a look at how it impacts health!

  • Boost Immunity: The Indian Gooseberry is a powerhouse of Vitamin C and A. It greatly increases white blood cells in our body and is an excellent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic. It is like a powerful soldier that shields our body against various foreign toxins.
  • Fights Cancer: It has the potential to restrict the growth of cancer cells by keeping harmful free radicals at bay. The Indian Gooseberry also counter-attacks the side effects of anti-cancer drugs, radiation and chemotherapy.
  • Keeps Diabetes in Check: It helps regulate blood sugar levels in many ways. The chromium present in it is responsible for the pancreas to produce sufficient insulin and the polyphenol keeps the oxidative stress low, thus making the body more responsive to insulin.
  • Good for the Heart: The cardio protective properties of the Indian Gooseberry due to the presence of Vitamin A and C, the chromium and iron help reduce cholesterol, increase HDL (Good cholesterol) and reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) and strengthen the heart muscles.
  • Protects the Eyes: Regular use of the Indian Gooseberry can protect our eyes from cataract and short-sightedness. The impressive carotene content in it can keep night blindness away.
  • Promotes a Healthy Liver: It is diuretic in nature, which means that it increases the volume and frequency of urine and fosters regular bowel movement. It also helps in eliminating toxic metals and the ill effects of excessive medication. Thus, it protects the liver. It also provides relief in the case of urinary tract infection.
  • Fountain of Youth: The Indian Gooseberry supports longevity, helps smoothen wrinkles, fortifies the skin, prevents hair loss and greying and provides lustrous hair. Besides beauty, it is also a brain tonic which promotes clarity of thought and boosts memory.

The Not So Good Part of the Indian Gooseberry! 

Since it is high in ascorbic acid, taking excessive quantities at night may erode the enamel in the teeth just like any other citrus fruit. Since it reduces Diabetes, sugar levels may drop, so keep your doctor informed about it. He may change your medication. Being diuretic, excess amla consumption may cause constipation to a few.

How to Eat the Indian Gooseberry

  • The best way to have it would be raw. You can add rock salt and pepper to kill the sourness
  • Powder and tablets are a convenient way to have it, but to be taken under medical supervision
  • Indian Gooseberry juice either freshly made at home or store bought are great options
  • Chawanprash: a healthy way to include it. 1-2 tsp can be taken daily
  • Amla Murabba: Since it has a good amount of sugar, which acts as a preservative, you can wash off the excess sugar syrup just before eating
  • Eat it as a chutney, pickle or you can even opt for Amla Candies

To put it all in a nutshell, taken in any form, it is a simple yet effective way to good health. It is worth its weight in gold and this information shouldn’t be ignored but passed on to the next generation!

Clear skin is not just determined by the lotion and creams that one applies but is predominantly influenced by the food that we eat. Health experts in this field say that minerals play an important role, so we need to feed our skin inside out. Apart from Vitamins A, C, E, K, these minerals have a tremendous power to provide clear and youthful skin. Minerals are like spark plugs which keep our engine running!

Some Important Minerals For Clear Skin 

Most of us pay attention to vitamins but neglect these minerals which are required in very minimum quantities. A few of them include:

Dietary sources: Almonds, Cashew Nuts, Walnuts, Hazelnuts, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds.
  • Magnesium: is such an important mineral that magnesium deficiency can speed up ageing. Fast food, aerated drinks and alcohol can leech the body of magnesium. This mineral is not only good for skin but hair, teeth and the bones as well. Dietary sources: Buckwheat, Barley, Coconut, Walnuts, Beetroot Green, Spinach.
  • Calcium: Commonly known for stronger bones and teeth, it is equally essential in providing healthy skin too by aiding skin elasticity and firmness. Dietary sources: Milk and Milk products, Sesame Seeds, Oranges, Chickpeas, and Nuts.
  • Copper: is like a catalyst which speeds up the production of the protein elastin which keeps the skin flexible. It also prevents skin pigmentation. Dietary sources: Walnuts, Brazilian Nuts, Sunflower Seeds, Cashew Nuts, Mushroom and Soybeans.

6 Foods That Trigger Migraine

Migraine is a severe headache accompanied by nausea, dizziness and vomiting. Initially the pain may be very mild, but gradually builds up to a throbbing pain. You may experience pain in one area or the pain may shift and sometimes, affect the entire head. It varies from person to person. The pain can go on for hours or even days. 

What Triggers A Migraine? 

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact triggers for a Migraine. Medical science states that inflammation of the neurotransmitters causes migraine. Hormonal imbalance, stress, change in season, change in physical activity, etc. are all possible causes for this debilitating condition. However, certain foods have shown to play a major role in provoking the migraine. 

  1. Alcohol: High consumption of alcohol causes dehydration and this causes the brain to react in a different way. This could be a major trigger. Apart from other alcohols, red wine, which is considered to be good for health, can cause migraine.
  2. Chocolate: Although nitric oxide is very good for the heart and blood vessels, nitrates present in chocolates tend to cause migraine as dilation of blood vessels can activate this condition.
  3. Processed Food: Most fast food, chinese food, ready to cook meals, instant noodles, pasta, oats, chips and other fried snacking options have an active ingredient called monosodium glutamate (MSG) which is considered safe to eat, but is said to be linked with migraine.
  4. Fermented Food: contains histamine which may be a possible reason. Cheese, pickled vegetables and fruits, dry fruits, sauerkraut, kimchi and vinegar come under the umbrella of fermented food. The high salt content in most of these foods may act as a trigger.
  5. Citrus Fruits: like oranges, lemons, melons etc. are also known to trigger this condition. These citrus fruits may cause gas formation which may kickstart the migraine
  6. Leftover food: Stale food is said to be one of the reasons for igniting a migraine as the tyramine content increases  during the storage period, hence making one more vulnerable to this pain. If food is not stored at the right temperature, it can trigger the pain.

Recipes With Seasonal Vegetables

recipes with seasonal vegetablesIf you’ve been sitting at home for too long, trying to cool yourselves under ACs and fans, there’s a simple way to maintain body heat and that’s food! Seasonal vegetables and fruits are loaded with micronutrients which not only help you stay hydrated but healthy as well – a much needed benefit for the current times. 

Healthy Recipes With Seasonal Vegetables 

Let’s try these 2 recipes with vegetables still available in the market! 

1. Pumpkin Soup

pumpkin soupIngredients:

  • Olive oil – 2 tbsp 
  • Onion – 1 finely chopped 
  • Leek – 1, white part only – finely sliced 
  • Garlic clove – 1 crushed 
  • Ground coriander – ½ tsp 
  • Ground cumin – 1 tsp 
  • Freshly grated nutmeg – ½ tsp 
  • Peeled pumpkin – 1kg diced 
  • Potato – 1kg peeled and diced 
  • Vegetable liquid stock – 1L 
  • Thin cream – ½ cup (125ml) 

Method: 

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan on low heat, add the onion and leek and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened but not colored. 
  2. Add garlic and spices. Cook while stirring for 30 seconds. 
  3. Add pumpkin, potato and stock and bring to boil. 
  4. Turn heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, and then blend in batches.
  5. Return the soup to a pan, stir through cream and reheat gently. 
  6. Season and add a little more nutmeg if desired.

2. Brin Baba Ganoush 

baba ganoushIngredients:

  • Egg plant – 2 large 
  • Garlic clove – 2-3 
  • Tahini paste – 3-4 tsp 
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp 
  • Yogurt – 2 tsp 
  • Salt to taste
  • Olive oil – 4-5 tsp
  • Finely chopped parsley and olives to garnish.

Method:

  1. Roast the egg plant directly on flame till it becomes soft and tender. Remove the peel and mash the pulp.
  2. Run this pulp in a mixer, add garlic, tahini paste, lemon juice, yogurt, salt to taste and half the quantity of oil. Remove it in a serving bowl.
  3. Garnish with finely chopped parsley, red chili flakes, olives and olive oil. 
  4. Baba Ganoush can be served with multigrain bread, pita bread or veggies. You can also add finely chopped onions and tomatoes.
