8 Basic Monsoon Trekking Essentials You Will Need For Your Next Climb

Monsoon Trekking EssentialsThe weather has been great and if you’re thinking about venturing outdoors for a little hike or trek in the lap of nature, it might be a good time to get to it! Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or if this is one of your first few treks, we all need a checklist before we make the climb. So what monsoon trekking essentials will you need? Let’s go over them!

Monsoon Trekking Essentials You Will Need

  1. Windcheater/Poncho: This accessory makes it to the top of the list for a reason. This is one of the trekking essentials you will need if you’re planning a trek during the monsoon. With the rain being unpredictable, it is imperative to keep yourself and your belongings as dry as possible. A basic poncho is a must have! Additionally, also carry a bag cover for your backpack so that all your trekking essentials are safe!
  2. Trekking or Hiking Boots: When trekking during the monsoon, having a firm grip is everything because the terrain gets slippery and you might get severely injured if you’re not careful! Invest in a good pair of trekking or hiking boots that are sturdy enough. Practice with them on flat as well as uneven surfaces, so you break into them before your next climb.
  3. Water Bottle or Hydra Pack: Staying hydrated on your journey is a must. You need to keep replenishing all the fluids you lose when you make a climb. Carry a minimum of 2L of water in a bottle or a hydra pack and remember to sip slowly and not gulp.
  4. Healthy Snacks: Trekking can be a strenuous activity and your body needs fuel to perform that activity. To keep going, carry a nutritious trail mix or protein bars that will energize you along the way. You can also carry some healthy cookies!
  5. The Right Clothes: Carry a Dri-Fit t-shirt or a full sleeved shirt. It will help absorb the sweat quicker and keep you dry. Moreso, wearing full sleeves along with trekking pants (avoid shorts) will save you from getting scratched against shrubs and bushes along the trail. Make sure you also carry a towel, an extra pair of clothes and socks in case you get wet.
  6. Ziplock: There’s no harm in carrying gadgets you need on a trek but you must have a ziplock to keep them safe! Carry one where you can store your phone, electronics such as a portable charger and even your wallet to protect it from unexpected rainfall.
  7. First Aid Kit: As much as we may try to avoid them, injuries might happen. Even if it is a small cut along the way. Always carry a first aid kit with cotton, bandage and a disinfectant. Make sure that a hand sanitizer is also a part of your first aid kit because hygiene comes first!
  8. Power bank: You don’t want your phone’s battery running low during an emergency. Keep a power bank handy to ensure that your phone is charged just as much as you are!

There you have it! Carry these basic monsoon trekking essentials and you’re good to go! If you’re a beginner and new to trekking, you should also check out our previous article where we covered the Top 10 Basic Trekking Tips For Beginners.

Top 10 Basic Trekking Tips For Beginners

basic trekking tips for beginnersMonsoons = treks! There’s no other way to look at it. Most hiking trails and trekking landscapes light up with luscious greenery during this season. Maybe that’s why avid trekkers and nature lovers venture out to explore spaces when it rains. Now while trekking seems like a fun activity, a few bruises and muscle aches will be the least of your worries if you’re not prepared. So to ensure that you have a good trip to enjoy that beautiful scenery only trekking can bring, here are some basic trekking tips to help you out!

Basic Trekking Tips For Beginners

1. Walk Straight: Whether you’re climbing up or making your way down, slopes can seem to be a challenge. While surmounting this challenge, make sure that you walk upright and don’t slouch or sit and climb as it can put pressure on your knees which could make the rest of the trek difficult.

2. Stay Hydrated: When making your way to the great outdoors, make sure you carry at least 2L of water with you. Avoid gulping the water down in one go. Instead, you should sip slowly. Carrying a sipper will help!

3. Carry An Electrolyte Mix: Sweating is only natural when you perform a strenuous activity but when you sweat, you also lose some essential electrolytes. To replenish lost electrolytes, carry some salt and sugar mixed with water. An easier option is to carry Electral or Glucose which you can mix with water. Alternatively, you can also opt for this electrolyte drink available on the GOQii Health Store. You need to be careful that you sip this and do not gulp. Remember to take 2 sips of water for every 1 sip of this energy drink.

walking poles - trekking tips4. Use Walking Poles: A walking pole can easily become your best friend on a trek. It really takes the pressure off your knees when you’re climbing down and supports you well when you’re going uphill. While it might take some time to get used to it, it’s definitely worth it!

5. Avoid Sitting Immediately: If you’ve been climbing for a while, it’s only natural to take a break. But when you do take a break, avoid sitting down immediately. It may make it difficult for you to get back up. Stand and rest for a while before you make your way again. Be mindful of the number of breaks you take as well as frequent breaks will increase tiredness.

6. Fuel Your Body: Your body needs fuel to keep going. Carrying heavy meals doesn’t make sense as you want to travel light, you can opt to carry some nuts, a nutritious trail mix or a protein bar with you. These will give you the energy to keep going. Eat them in small portions when you take a break.

footwear trekking7. Watch Your Footwear: Even if you’re keen on doing just two treks this monsoon, it’s a good idea to invest in a good pair of shoes. Some terrains can be tricky and slippery, especially during monsoons. You need shoes that offer good grip and support you well.

8. Dress Well: A trekking trail might be the worst place you would want to show off your new dress or those awesome, trendy shorts you picked from a fancy outlet. You need to cover up! Wear a Dri Fit, full sleeve shirt and pants that cover your legs. This will protect you from insects, mosquitoes and getting scraped by thorns when you move along a dense trail. You can get some amazing Dri Fit t-shirts and Joggers from the GOQii Health Store!

9. Waterproof Yourself: If you’re planning to carry an umbrella, don’t. During a monsoon trek, leaving your belongings and yourself unprotected from a sudden rain shower would not bode well for you. Try carrying a poncho which will cover most of your body as well as your backpack.

10. Communicate: If you’re with a trekking group or you’re trekking with a group of friends, if at any point you feel uneasy, make it a point to tell your trek leader or organizer. You could put your life in danger if you continue and could ruin the experience for everyone else. It’s best to mitigate issues before they get worse. Remember that communication is key in the outdoors.

Few Things To Bear In Mind Before You Begin

  • If it is your first time trekking, start walking now! Prepare a little by taking small hikes around your vicinity. Practice on uneven trails instead of footpaths or a park because trek trails won’t be that flat. Additionally, also work on some leg based cardio and try taking the stairs as often as you can. It will help you build some stamina and endurance before your climb.
  • Travel light. Do not carry things you do not need. Fewer the electronics the better. A trek is not a place where you will find any need for a laptop or a tab. Your cellphone, a power bank and a torch, along with other essentials mentioned above will be enough.
  • Additionally, avoid wearing your earphones when you begin your climb. You might miss out on instruction, a cry for help or any unforeseen circumstance. Keep your eyes and ears wide open and enjoy the natural sounds and vistas you’ll only get in the midst of nature.
  • If you would like to document your adventure, it’s always nice to keep a small notepad with you to jot down your experiences and also to keep a track of the details of the place like how to get there or certain markers which will help you when you visit again.

We hope these trekking tips help you make the most of your trek! Do let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Fitness For Trekking: Tips To Get You Started!

Get fit for trekking

In my blog titled ‘Trekking is not difficult if you know how to walk’, I talked of how going on a trek is not such an arduous task. I also mentioned a few dos and don’ts that would help first time trekkers. In this blog, we’ll talk about fitness for trekking and how to prepare.

Trekking up a mountain or just hiking across the countryside is a wonderful activity to indulge in. Believe me, it is such a joyous and rewarding experience. However, one must be prepared! Most people heading off on a trek must be at a fitness level wherein they can truly enjoy the trek. Unfortunately, leading a busy life and lacking a specific fitness regime leaves many trekkers less prepared than they should be. Fitness for trekking or training for a trek is no rocket science. Training smart helps and training effectively helps to gain energy which in turn will help you truly enjoy your trek.

Before Everything, Get Yourself Checked

Any adventure sport activity requires stamina and strength. Trekking is like any other athletic sport and before you embark on this path it’s good to get yourself medically checked and consult your doctor. If you let your doctor where you are going for a trek –in India specifically if you are going for the time for a trek to the Himalayas it is good to get a basic medical checkup done. You can also let your doctor know the conditions your trek entails. What altitude would you be scaling, the number of days the trek entails, the distance you would be covering per day, the change in altitude per day and the extremes of temperature that you are likely to encounter.

Once your doctor is aware of what activity you are going to undertake he can advise you accordingly. But, in terms of getting some fitness tips its better you discuss your activity with your personal trainer or somebody who is a pro trekker and well aware of the conditions in the high altitude as they would be better equipped to give you the right guidance.

Fitness For Trekking

Preparing for a trek is no different from preparing for a long distance run or a long distance trail walking. The only difference being a trek is not a competition and you can walk at your pace and enjoy the serenity around you. For trekking, you need to adapt your body to stress and build on it slowly and steadily to be able to handle more stress in the future. The idea is to toughen your body to withstand extreme conditions of the trek. Walking for 5-6 hours in high altitude or at an altitude of even 3000 feet is taxing if you are not used to it or if you are not fit.

This is not achieved overnight. Your training has to start at least 3-6 months in advance for your body to get attuned to the stress levels that it will go through. If you intend to take trekking or any outdoor activity seriously and plan to go on regular treks, then training on a regular basis would be helpful.

Trekkers need a balanced approach, strengthening the entire body, if you want to be successful and injury free during training and during the trek. It is therefore important to strengthen your weak links as well as the major muscle groups.

When it comes to trekking, having a strong back goes a long way from having strong legs and arms. So along with cardio, coupling strength training will not hurt but only help. Strength training will help build up muscles. The key is to strengthen our stomach muscles as well as the surrounding muscle groups known as the core.

Every trek involves climbing or descending significant elevations. Therefore, you need to prepare your body for climbing, descending, or both. It is important to vary your training to work the muscles and joints used as you climb and descend.

If you have varied terrain near your house where you live that would an ideal training topography. By taking longer walks up and down a hill trail, you simulate the conditions of your trek and work both the muscles needed for downhill as well as uphill. But, not all of us are lucky to have that perfect training setting. Then, the best way to train is to build a few physical activities within your daily routine before you embark on the trek. Start with walking for about 1-2 hours on flat surface for a week and gradually increase it to about 3 hours with walks on inclines for four or five days a week with a backpack with about 4 kg in it.

This is because in every trek you go, you will be carrying a small daypack with at least 3-4 kg in it. Doing this on a regular basis will help you get used to it. If you work out in the gym then walking on the treadmill with a backpack at a 2-5% incline will enhance your endurance and also strengthen you.

The other ideal way is to simulate your hill training is by climbing up and down flights of stairs. Repeating the process a number of times helps. Initially start with 20 flights of stairs. Then gradually build up to 100 flights of stairs. This number is highly subjective as flights vary in size and the amount of elevation you may climb in a day varies greatly. However, 100 flights is a reasonable goal that accomplishes a good base to prepare for your trek.

When walking up and down steps, try to vary which leg you lead with as well as whether you take one or two steps in a stride. By varying your step you greater simulate real world conditions. It’s usually not the case that you can walk with a consistent exact stride. Sometimes you have to step over large rocks or reach down to a flat area. The more you simulate the conditions experienced on the trail the better prepared you will be.

Most people don’t realize that walking downhill is actually more destructive to the body. This is due to two reasons: First, there is more force on the body as you go downhill, especially with weight on your back. Second, as you descend, the muscles elongate when stressed caused by walking uphill.

Initially you can start climbing stairs without a pack on your back. As the trek dates near say a month before the trek you can walk with the pack and the weight.

Remember along with all this training, a proper diet and rest should not be forgotten. Finally, trekking should be fun! It should be enjoyed and not thought of as an arduous task. The goal should also never be a race to a destination. The moment you think it’s a race and want to go ahead of everyone, you are putting yourself into trouble and in the process, miss the wonderful sites and experiences along the way.

We hope this article helps you trek and see more! Do leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Being Active on a Sunday

 active sunday on the beach

Active Sunday on a beach

Sunday’s are generally considered the day to laze around. But, did you know that it is actually the first day of the week and not the last day. Yes! You heard me right Sundays are the first day of the week. Hence, being active on the first day of the week keeps you going for the rest of the week.

GOQii introduced the concept of ‘Active Sunday’ 3 years ago. In Active Sunday, GOQii players are invited for a one-hour active work out session in the outdoor with the expert trainers and coaches of GOQii. This movement is not only for the players but it is seeing active participation from GOQii employees and the CEO Vishal Gondal himself being present and exercising with all. The movement caught on and we had many users who resonated with this thought process. This prompted us to get some of our regular attendees to take charge and start their own Active Sunday chapters in their vicinity.

Swarup Chougule, a regular at Active Sunday for the last 2 years says, “Active Sunday is the most fruitful way of engaging yourself on a Sunday. The nice chill in the air and gentle sunlight sets the mood for a good training routine. We meet many like-minded people and the group keeps motivating each other to stay healthy. The concept fits perfectly into the idea of a ‘Healthy Community Life’”.

Sundays have never been better Swarup training with Goqii at Active Sunday

Similarly, Anitha Rao, an active GOQii player in her 50s can give youngsters a run for their money. She is more active and energetic than most half her age. While in Mumbai Anitha, used to look forward to Active Sunday session where she could meet likely minded people. “This is much needed. Most people are too stressed out and at times lonely and shy too. They just need a bit of push and motivation to get out of their comfort zone. Also, each one is unique and one can learn from one and other. Anitha has been leading active Sunday’s in Bengaluru and is our first woman GOQii Champion.

anitha 1

Anitha’s Active Sunday ranges from walking, running, swimming, yoga and trekking

Research indicates that exercising is good for health. As per ACSM (American College of Sports and Medicine) guidelines, a person must involve himself in physical activities at least 3 days a week. The benefits are divided into three categories Physical, mental and social benefits. Exercise helps to strengthen the heart and the cardiovascular system. It improves blood circulation, as a result, it lowers the risk of heart attack and strokes.

For the regular like Swarup and Anitha, it is their self-motivation to remain healthy and fit that drives them to be active even on a Sunday. Anitha has been championing the cause of Active Sunday in Bengaluru and has already conducted two active Sundays with GOQii players there.

The early start on Sunday morning creates ample time to connect better with the family and the community at large. The benefits of Active Sunday are many. “It is not just a workout session, but a complete package with deep interaction with people aspiring for a quality life,” says Swarup.

Being active on the first day of the week brightens and cheers you up. Everyone attending the Active Sunday is pumped up and raring to go for the rest of the day/week. “The other advantage is that it is a great way to meet like-minded people with similar or some varied interests, there is an exchange of ideas and you can learn from one another and expand your horizon,” says Anitha.

Bhavik shah

Bhavik from Pune loves cycling as an activity on a Sunday

Bhavik Shah, an active player of GOQii from Pune who is a runner and a cyclist thinks that active Sunday is a great kick-start to an otherwise lazy Sunday. He adds,”There are many reasons why I like being active on a Sunday as well, one of the primary reason being ‘Self Love via Self Care’. Apart from the obvious benefits, most people are already aware, exercise has been touted as a cure for just about anything that ails you. Frequent colds? Exercise. Poor digestion? Exercise. Feel depressed? Exercise”. Bhavik has taken the lead to conduct active Sunday workout session in his vicinity.

Lastly, the other big draw of Active Sunday is the picturesque locations where it is conducted. Sometimes it is a large park, sometimes on a beach and sometimes on the promenade along the sea. With a lot of positive energy all around, the benefits of working out in such locations multiply exponentially and more people are likely to join the regime. “There is a lot of physical and emotional contentment when we conduct an Active Sunday and encourage others to be active,” concluded Swarup.

Give their enthusiasm to help others and motivate others to get active on a Sunday, Swarup and Anitha have been inducted as GOQii champions to take this positive movement of forward in their respective cities of Mumbai and Bengaluru.

So if you have not been a part of Active Sunday, now is your chance to join the movement in the city of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.
