Want Younger Looking Skin? Try These Foods Now!

younger looking skinThey say real beauty comes from within. Well, people may have different perspectives over this quote but in the opinion of a Nutritionist, what food you put inside your body, is what reflects on your skin! Ageing is a normal physiological phenomenon which starts from the inside out. This makes it imperative to take care of your diet to prevent the effects of ageing. With advancing age, the proteins and pigments of our skin start to deteriorate. However, with a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition, in the absence of disease, one can still manage to have a plump skin. Just like our emotional troubles can be seen on the face by the way of our expressions, the internal troubles of our body show up on the skin. If you feed your body with the right kind of food, it radiates right on the skin. Let’s look at some foods to get that younger looking skin you’ve always wanted!

Foods For Younger Looking Skin

  1. Water: As simple and feeble as it may sound, water is the most important component of a skincare regime. In all forms, whether luke warm, chilled or infused, water is the most effective tool for younger looking skin and to fight any skin abnormalities. It cleanses the excess metabolites and harmful substances that may accumulate beneath the layers of skin. Water helps keep the skin moisturised and flush out infectious agents.
  2. Berries, Melons and Citrus Fruits: Berries are natural chemical exfoliators. They contain salicylic acid which is a popular ingredient in beauty products known for anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Berries are also rich in Vitamin C and ellagic acid that can help reduce acne. Rich in Vitamin A, C and B, melons can prove to be effective in maintaining good skin health. They can also improve your digestive system and prevent constipation. This, in turn, aids in clearing up the skin. Melons are also effective in treating psoriasis, a dry skin condition that causes itchy, flaky and red patches of skin. The rich vitamin C content of citrus fruits can effectively fight free radical action, which prevents skin ageing. Citric acid helps curb the bacterial action and pathogens present under the skin. As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen decreases and the elasticity of the skin too. Vitamin C helps repair and rejuvenate the skin, helping in wound healing and building connective tissue, leading to younger looking skin.
  3. Turmeric: Being the most potent spice, Turmeric helps fight cell damage, chronic disease and aging, helping maintain younger looking skin. All this due to the powerful pigment, curcumin.
  4. Nuts and Seeds: Nuts are densely packed with a variety of skin healthy nutrients such as proteins, vitamin E, essential oils, minerals, and antioxidants. Soaked almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds and sesame seeds are the richest sources of vitamin E – which are very helpful to protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun. Vitamin E also helps strengthen your skin, avoid skin infections and give it a radiant glow.
  5. Dark Chocolate: contains cocoa flavanols. These are very potent antioxidants that protect the skin from the oxidative damage caused by pollution or sunlight. It also protects the skin by enhancing blood flow, which helps by nourishing and moisturizing it. Make sure to choose only dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa in it.
  6. Tomatoes: Tomato and tomato juice are high in lycopene, a natural carotenoid that fights pigmentation and darkening due to ageing or stress.
  7. Virgin coconut oil: Used in cooking, it slows down the aging process by lowering oxidative stress and relieving pressure on the liver, it nourishes the skin and hair to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and clears dark patches and cellulite.
  8. Avocados: are high in monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats that are essential to nourish the skin and prevent dryness. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory to keep the immune system effectively functioning. The lutein and zeaxanthin in this fruit may help to protect the skin from UV damage. It is also full of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K which helps you get the glow of younger looking skin.
  9. Leafy greens: Spinach, Collard greens, Radish greens and Kale are excellent for replenishing tired skin and dark under-eye shadows due to their high iron and magnesium content. These leafy greens are rich in vitamin K that improve skin cell regrowth for a better complexion.
  10. Cucumbers: are more water than anything else. Oh so hydrating! Thus, they possess an extraordinary cooling effect. The peel of a cucumber contains antioxidants, Vitamin C and K, which can aid in skin whitening and can also reduce the appearance of fine lines. They also help in reducing puffy eyes and dark circles.

We hope this article helps you achieve that younger looking skin you’ve always desired. Before you switch to any of these foods, please ensure that you reach out to your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian in case you have allergies or any underlying medical conditions. 6 Lifestyle Changes For Acne-Free Skin

acne-free skinWe all yearn for clear, glowing, blemish-free skin! There’s no denying that smooth skin has mass appeal. If smooth skin were the protagonist of your story, acne would certainly be the formidable foe!

Acne is basically a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples. It can lead to redness and dull skin. Risk factors include genetics, menstrual cycle, stress, anxiety, humid climate, using oil-based makeup, out of home foods, etc.

Once developed, acne requires a lot of patience to fade away. Hence, you need to be religious towards the efforts.

Make smooth skin a reality with these 5 lifestyle changes which can help you reduce or prevent acne!

No Refined Carbs & Sugar

Bid alcohol, soft drinks, desserts, bread, ice-cream, sugar, maida, etc. a good farewell! As they have a high glycemic index, it can lead to high blood sugar and high insulin levels. This might result in inflammation, which is one of the prime causes of acne. High sugar intake along with acne can lead to dark circles, loose skin, and wrinkles, etc. So go low on sugar.

Drink More Water

Skin cells require water to function properly. According to research, acne is more likely to develop when your system has more toxins. Water helps flush these toxins out. Though water is not a miracle cure but it definitely helps in fighting acne.

Physical Activity

Exercise boosts blood circulation and promotes sweating, which helps the body push impurities out of the pores, reducing acne. Physical activity helps us reduce stress levels, which inturn aids acne prevention. Just make sure you clean up before and after a workout.

Get Quality Sleep

Do you wake up fresh and energetic in the morning? If you don’t get good, restorative sleep, your body might not feel rested. This could start the cortisol surge, which can put you at risk for more acne. Make sleep your priority and give your body the rest it needs and your acne a chance to heal.

Eat Your Colors

Yes! Eat all the colourful fruits and vegetables. They help us improve vitamin levels and antioxidant intake which keeps the skin clear. Eat dark leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots, beetroot, berries, papaya, etc. on a daily basis.

Eat Healthy Fats

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are required to keep your skin healthy. They help prevent skin dryness and help you maintain healthy and hydrated skin. Healthy fats are the building blocks of cell membranes. Hence, add walnuts, fish oil, flax seeds, avocado, sunflower seeds, etc. to your diet.

Some handy tips for good skin:

  • Wash your hands once you wake up before touching the face
  • Use fresh towels and handkerchiefs daily
  • Always remove your makeup completely
  • Clean your phone on a regular basis
  • Do not sleep without washing your face

Natural Skincare For Healthy, Glowing Skin!

Natural SkincareOne is always on the lookout for that “miracle cream” that will make our skin glow and make us fair. Most of us in the literal sense, abuse our skin. We expose our facial skin to various creams, lotions and skincare treatments. No matter how we take it, our skin regulates our body’s temperature, protects us from bacteria and viruses that cause infectious diseases.

We often give much attention to our facial skin for obvious reasons. But, we should definitely try to maintain and keep our entire covering (skin) healthy rather than focusing only on the face.

There are many superficial skincare treatments available in the market to bring a glow to your skin. However, as a dietician, I will be showing you ways to keep your skin healthy by foods found in your kitchen itself.

You will be surprised to know that there is a strong link between the food you eat and the health of your skin. Your food choices are literally reflected on your skin!

Vitamins

Vitamins like B complex, A, D, E, and C are known to play an important role in maintaining healthy skin. They have chemicals called photochemicals which help in preserving the body from various bacterial, viral and free radical invasions. They also have anti-oxidant properties which helps the skin from the oxidative damage caused by stress, pollution and the body’s own reaction.

Nutrition Tips for Skincare

  • Eat at least 5-6 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily
  • Make your salad more colorful! The more colors you add, the more it benefits your skin
  • Try drinking Amla (Indian Gooseberry) juice every day. I would say, “An Amla a day, keeps the dermatologist away”
  • Drink fresh fruit juices. Try a different juice every week. For instance, juices you could try include Cranberry, blueberry and orange juice, etc.

Supplementation for Skincare

Supplementation helps in maintaining healthy skin. Apart from the cosmetic point of view, many dermatologists now recommend nutritional supplements to tackle issues like acne. Supplementation of multivitamins and omega 3/ fish oil capsules have shown positive effects on skin.

Supplementation is needed when a person’s daily requirement of a certain nutrient is inadequate. Hence, before starting off with any nutritional supplement, consult your dietitian.

Foods to Avoid

As mentioned above, the kind of food we eat reflects on our skin. Junk food, fatty foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and refined products affect your skin. This can be attributed to the fact that these foods have a negative impact on health by hindering the absorption of certain nutrients. Also smoking can accelerate the aging process, causing wrinkles even before time.

Water Intake

This is tried and tested all over and also considered as a “Gharelu Nuska” – meaning home remedy. Drinking enough water and maintaining good hydration retains the moisture of the skin. Drinking adequate water clears out toxins and waste from the body keeping it healthy. This is indirectly seen through the skin.

Stress and Sleep vs. Skin

Ever wondered why you can see acne on your face when you are stressed?

Research has shown a positive link between stress and its effects on the skin. Getting a good night’s sleep and de-stressing yourself from everyday routine can be helpful and can also improve your skin. Insufficient sleep causes dark circles around the eyes.

Early morning yoga outdoors will not only reduce your stress level but will also give you your daily dose of Vitamin D. There is a research that shows a strong link between stress and skin ageing. I am sure nobody wants to look old, right? Try de-stressing yourself every time you find it’s taking a toll on your health.

Exercise and Skincare

It is the key to healthy skin! We are well aware of the benefits of exercise and cardio respiratory fitness, but little do we know about its effect on the skin. Regular exercise helps in regulating blood flow to our body especially the skin. Blood not only carries oxygen but it also carries nutrients to our cells. By increasing the blood flow, exercise nourishes skin cells, keeping them healthy and vital!

Nutrition is one the important components that modulate the vibrancy of your skin. As a dietician, I believe we should stop taking our skin for granted. We need to think beyond creams, make ups and laser treatments. Nourish your skin not through chemicals but with proper nutrition, regular exercise and good sleep!
