From Crawling to completing a Half Marathon, all within 12 months

kk-adhm-15 (1)

Since October 2014, Kamal from leading a very unhealthy lifestyle to turning an ace marathoner in a years time has now made fitness & running a way of life. Let’s hear it from him how he achieved his goals.

Kamal Karnatak is a busy CIO of an Indian MNC. He lives in New Delhi and works in Gurgaon. His office is a neat 43 km away and he travels by car for almost 2 hrs (One Side) -5 days a week.  Just as he is passionate about his work, he is also passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle and has become a great inspiration and motivation to many of his friends to follow the same. His day starts at 5.30 am and he is out for a 6 km run at 6 am on alternate days and on weekends he runs 10 km. The days he is not running he resorts to strength training. Here is how he did it?

“I was aware of my shortcomings and kept trying to get fit. I tried several other wearables available on the market until I tried GOQii. I knew about it and decided to give it a try. I found that GOQii is entirely different from other so-called fitness bands, while other tracks various body parameters, GOQii band connects you to complete health ecosystem with real people. I got on to GOQii ecosystem in Oct 2014 and since then the one big change I have brought to my life is getting a proper routine.  I exercise every day and eat five meals a day (mindful eating).”

When Kamal started using GOQii, he did not have any fixed routine for exercise. His daily routine was to travel 43 km to work in a car for 2 hrs from New Delhi to Gurgaon to and fro. Lack of any exercise, incorrect nutrition had caused indigestion and bloating. To add to these, his total cholesterol was as high as 270 and BP were 90/130 much above the normal. With the right intention to want to get healthier and fitter, he would exercise only when he had the time. He found that his normal steps per day were 3000-4000 and during weekends it used to be only 2000-3000. “I was always under the impression that I do not have enough time to exercise.”

After he got on to GOQii he was given a target of at least 10K steps per day and that for him was a difficult task to achieve.  So he added walking to his routine. Soon after 8 months of being on the GOQii platform; on a daily basis he was achieving nearly 12K steps per day and that count went up to 25-30k during weekends. “My coaches helped me to achieve that over a period of time and it was such a gradual process for me that now it has become a lifestyle,” asserts Kamal.

He Crawled to Walk-Run 42 min to a Half Marathon

kamal karnatak

After two months of using GOQii and achieving his targets (Steps, Water, and Sleep) on a daily basis he was still not losing weight. So his coach asked him to start 1 min run and 2 min walk routine for 21 min. She also asked him to plan to participate in a 6K run within a year’s time, which Kamal says he laughingly ignored. “I still remember that on the cold morning of December’14 when I ran, I could barely run only for 42 seconds at a stretch on the first day and after that routine of nearly 20 min, I was quite exhausted. My foot muscles were soaring with pain and I thought that I may not be able to walk the next day. I shared the same with my coach and she said that do this for next 3 days and everything would be fine,” he says.

And surely it was all ok and after 8 months he could run for 42 min continuously. In November 2015, he completed his first half marathon (21.1 KM) in 2hrs 34 min. Now he is sure that if he continued to follow his regime he would surely be able to run 42 KM marathon by this year. While his goal was to lose weight, he achieved that as well and lost some 12 kg by now. The best part is that his other issues of high cholesterol and high BP also normalized.  Running he says was never part of his goal but it happened and he is glad it did.

The plan was to go from fit to fitter

Today, Kamal’s overall fitness has improved. “With the help of my coaches, I made many permanent lifestyle changes. I also realized that health is not a project as it does not have any end date, it’s a continuous process and with the right kind of motivation anything can be achieved. I, who always used to complain that I do not have enough time for exercise, now always look for exercises/walking/running excuses,” says Kamal. “My journey continues with GOQii and I feel that it would help me to become a fitter person,” he adds.

What does Coach Kruti Jain have to say?

Kamal is a focused & a determined player. His journey has always been progressive. He wasn’t very consistent with his activities (due to other priorities) earlier. But, when he joined GOQii, it looked as if he has promised himself to not fail this time.

In spite of many hurdles, he would manage to get back to the regime. He started off with the goal of losing some weight because of which he was directed towards running.

From a simple goal of weight loss, his goal changed to running a half marathon by the end of the year and he did it. Clearly emerged a winner. He is one such player who keeps his coach on her toes. His interest & obedience makes you feel responsible & you want to help him in every possible way.

Amazing benefits of drinking water from a copper vessel

copper_vessel

Ancient Ayurveda scriptures state that storing and drinking water from a copper vessel is beneficial for one’s health. For thousands of years Indians and Asians in general are aware and have been following this technique.

Copper is found to possess a plethora of health benefits, including weight loss. It has the potential to kill the microorganisms (molds, fungi, algae, and bacteria) present in the water that are harmful to the body. When you store water in a copper vessel overnight or for over 8 hours, a very small amount of copper ions gently leaches into the water and lends all its positive properties, thereby creating a natural purification process. This also has the ability to destroy a wide range of harmful microbes, fungi etc. To yield the optimum health benefits, store water in the copper vessel overnight and drink it soon as you wake up in the morning.

Here are some of the benefits.

Good for digestion

Copper contains intrinsic properties that promote better digestion. The properties in copper help stimulate the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the stomach that helps food get digested and move along the digestive tract. Since copper can kill harmful bacteria and reduce inflammation in the stomach, drinking water stored in a copper pot can be a great remedy for gas, ulcers, indigestion and infections. Drinking copper water may also help regulate the functioning of liver and kidney by cleansing and detoxifying the stomach.

Aids in weight loss

If you’re trying to shed a few pounds, then, this one is definitely for you – drink water stored in copper pots every day. Copper can help your body break down fat and eliminate it effectively so that you do not put on the piles. To lose weight quickly, try swapping copper-infused water for those calorie-laden beverages that contribute to weight gain. In addition to this, follow a healthy lifestyle, including sticking to a fitness routine and eating a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.

Prevents heart disease and cancer

Copper has been found to regulate heart rate, blood pressure and lower blood cholesterol level, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. According to the American Cancer Society, some studies showed that copper has anti-cancer effects although the exact mechanism for such activity is still unclear.

Heals wounds

The antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties in copper can quickly treat and heal wounds quickly. Perhaps, copper peptides are considered as one of the best healing agents. According to the Mayo Clinic, peptides are protein fragments that, along with copper, stimulate collagen production and can improve the effectiveness of antioxidants. The copper compound increases the amount of protein synthesis in collagen and elastin, which helps in wound healing.

Regulates thyroid function

A deficiency or low levels of copper in the body can cause thyroid problems. Copper is one of the most important trace minerals the thyroid needs to function normally. Although there are many things that can contribute to thyroid disorders, drinking water from a copper vessel may keep your thyroid healthy and functioning correctly.

A word of caution: Too much of copper can be detrimental to health, remember, the metal is not instinctively utilised by the body. So, avoid overdoing it – drinking water twice or thrice a day from a copper vessel may be enough to reap its numerous benefits

8 healthy food pairings to boost your health

Milk-And-Yolk

This must have happened many times that some food products taste horrible when eaten alone and tastes too good when combined with some other food products?

That’s the way nature has designed it for us. Nature has pre-planned the best food combination for us, it just takes the right time to know it! Well, it’s not just about the taste but, it is also about the nutrients which you get out of those food combinations!

Have you heard of food synergy? Different components in a single food can work together to benefit our health, and so can components in different foods that are eaten together. David Jacobs, PhD, a researcher from the University of Minnesota, loosely defines food synergy as the idea that food influences our health in complex and highly interactive ways. Simply put, Food synergy is nothing but nutrients that work together better.

It reminds us of how a variety of foods in our diet will help us live a healthy life! At GOQii we are celebrating Food Synergy….Let me take you through some food synergies that you adopt in your daily life.

(1)   Rosemary and meat

Rosemary-STEAK

Not many people must have heard about rosemary but, it is a very useful herb which is an excellent antioxidant having a good amount of carnosol and carnosic content. This herb is native to Mediterranean. People who cook non-veg might have no idea about what happens to the meat when it is cooked at a very high temperature. Well, when meat gets exposed to high temperature, carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amine is formed which is very dangerous. If meat is marinated with rosemary herb, these carcinogenic compounds will be neutralized because of its antioxidant properties.

A study by Dr. J. Scott Smith of Kansas State University in Manhattan further endorses the above statements. He studied Heterocyclic Amines (HCA’s), which are carcinogenic compounds that form when meat is cooked at high temperatures. He found that adding rosemary extract to ground meat reduced the amount of cancer-causing compounds created during grilling. He attributed this to the antioxidants found in the rosemary extract.

(2)  Green tea and lemon drop

green-tea-with-lemon

Green Tea is a great elixir and did you know that by adding lemon to your cup of Green Tea you can reap a lot of benefits. Various studies have also proved this to be right. Catechins, the main health compound in tea tied to reduced risk of cancer, heart attack, and other diseases, unfortunately, isn’t absorbed very well in the intestines. After digestion, less than 20 percent of catechins remain.

In two studies, by Purdue University, researchers found that adding lemon juice, other citrus juice, or vitamin C helped the body absorb as much as 13 times the healthy catechins than normal. The addition of lemon juice caused 80 percent of the catechins to remain. The studies tested the effects of absorption with both rats and a human digestive model.

Lemon is rich in vitamin c (water soluble vitamin) and green tea is rich in antioxidant compounds such as catechin. When both of these are combined, lemon will increase the absorption of antioxidants making this combination the most widely used combination among people!

 (3)  Virgin Olive oil and tomatoes

tomatoes-and-olive-oil

How many of you are aware of the benefits of mixing Olive oil and tomatoes? I have seen many people using this combination mostly as their salad option. Why and how is it healthy we shall find out?

The bioavailability of olive oil and tomatoes is very high. These two Super Foods protect, energize and satiate; together, they amplify each other’s already extraordinary benefits. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which is a phytochemical/phytonutrient which will help in maintain heart health and can reduce the risk of having prostate cancer drastically. Tomatoes basically have carotenoids which are fat soluble and only with fat, these carotenoids would be available in the body. Virgin Olive oil is very rich in good fatty acids and there is nothing better than choosing olive oil as a support for better absorption of fat soluble vitamins.

Merritt Rosen who holds a Masters in Health and Consumer Psychology from New York University calls Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Tomatoes- the hottest power couple. According to her pairing virgin olive, oil and tomatoes are the best thing one can do. Not only does heart healthy EVOO protect cells against damage and inflammation and promote healthy skin from the inside out, it also helps ensure the absorption of these fat-soluble carotenoids.

 (4)   Milk and eggs

Milk-And-Yolk

Did you know that Marilyn Monroe’s daily diet consisted of two raw eggs whipped in warm milk for breakfast? Rebecca Harrington, in an article in ‘The Cut’ magazine, quoted an old interview of Marilyn Monroe in 1952 to the now defunct Pageant Magazine in which Monroe describing her daily diet said, “I doubt any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry.”

Milk and eggs are so far the best examples of perfect food synergy! There is nothing like having a glass of milk and boiled egg for your breakfast. Egg yolk is very rich in vitamin D and milk is rich in calcium. Vitamin D helps in increasing the calcium absorption which will keep your bones healthy and thus it reduces the risk of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in the body.

(5)  Garlic and Fish

garlic-fish

Facing cholesterol issues? You must give this food synergy a try. For all non-vegetarians, this food synergy is a boon. Here is why it is a boon?

Garlic is rich in sulphur compounds which help in fighting diseases and fights against the inflammation in the body. Fish is a very rich source of protein. If these 2 super foods are combined together, their power of fighting diseases drastically increases.

Adding garlic to fish will help in lowering bad cholesterol and also maintain your triglyceride levels!

 (6)  Curcuma longa (turmeric) and pepper

turmeric and pepper

There are many types of research and articles which are being published on benefits of turmeric. Although the therapeutic use of Curcuma was recorded as early as 1748, the first article referring to the use of curcumin in human disease was published in 1937 by Oppenheimer. In this study, the author examined the effects of “curcumin” or “curcunat” containing 0.1 g to 0.25 g sodium curcumin and 0.1 g calcium cholate in human biliary diseases.

Curcumin has various properties like lowering bad cholesterol, prevents cancer, boosting liver function and more. But, when it comes to its absorption, only curcumin might not benefit. Adding pepper to it will boost the absorption of curcumin ( the active ingredient in turmeric) and bring out major benefits to the body.

 (7)  Spinach and lemon drops

spinach & lemon drop

We might have heard about spinach being rich in iron and we should include it in our daily diet but we might not know that iron is spinach is not readily absorbed in the body. Absorption of iron is very poor but, if you add lemon drops to it, iron absorption will be increased. Vitamin c helps in increasing the absorption of iron in the food.

 (8)  Rice and vinegar

rice & vinegar

There are many myths about rice and one of them is that a diabetic should avoid taking rice. It is said that rice spikes up the sugar levels. Adding, vinegar to your rice will slow the blood sugar spike. So, diabetics can take rice to some extent and this is also good for people looking for weight loss and loves eating rice!

Conclusion:

It is always good to know about food combinations which will help in boosting your health! Vitamin D & calcium and Iron and vitamin C combination must be taken care off. There are food combinations which should be avoided which will be covered up in my next blog. Until then stay tuned!

No matter what age, if you are determined to change your lifestyle, all you need is to work hard and not give up

extreme rt- Ilyas and his mom           Extreme Right: Safiya Begum doing plank exercise with the other active Sunday participants

At 58, she is one of the most active members of the ‘GOQii Active Sundays’ held at Powai, Mumbai thereby proving that age can never be an impediment to start anything in life. If you are determined and have the will to put in hard work and bring about a change for yourself, then nothing is difficult. Safiya Begum has just done that. Here is her story…

Safiya Begum travels all the way from Mankhurd to Powai every Sunday morning along with her son Mohammad Ilyas. “The transformation in her has come in the last one year,” says her son and since then there has been no looking back for her.

She had a lung issue way back in 2016 for which she had to be hospitalized. After she was discharged from the hospital in her hometown, her son Ilyas had to get her to Mumbai and admit her again in Hinduja hospital in for a thorough check-up and she was categorically told that she had to control her weight and the lung issue was due to thyroid, Sugar and BP. She underwent 1-year treatment thereafter but, was not active and was on medication.

Ilyas had decided that he had to get his mother off medication and follow a routine of walking and some exercise. he got her to follow his routine which his GOQii coach had given him. The routine was to take walks outside. She started enjoying this routine and started going for regular walks.

Ilyas says, “There has been no looking back for my mom. She goes for a walk 3 times a day. Once in the morning, afternoon and evening.  I have even got her a GOQii tracker now so she can see her step count”.

Exactly six months ago in December, we got a check-up done. Her Thyroid medication has been reduced, Sugar levels are at normal level, BP is also under control. She has been asked by the doctor to take medication for BP only if there is a problem.  Since January 2018, she started attending the GOQii Active Sunday sessions and she is thoroughly enjoying the sessions. She has made friends with many of the active Sunday players and hence enjoys her group exercise sessions.

Safiya Begun has proved it that no matter what age if you are determined to change your lifestyle and be active, all you need is to put in efforts and not give up. There are no shortcuts to life.
