Does Lifting Weights Build Mental Strength?

build mental strength

Exercise helps maintain healthy weight, control sugar levels, strengthen muscles and bones, and most importantly, it improves fitness and keeps you healthy! It also has an effect on our mental strength as it improves mood, helps in relaxation and lowers depression. This happens because the brain releases neurotransmitters called endorphins which regulate positive feelings and keeps the mood up.

What Is Good Mental Strength?

Having good mental strength means to have logical and realistic thinking patterns, decision making power and this helps manage your emotions and behaviour. Many studies have proven that people suffering with anxiety, mood disorders and depression benefit from including exercise in their routine. Hence, following a regular exercise pattern is essential to maintain mental health and improve mental strength.

Mental strength is as important as physical strength and the good news is that both can be improved with exercise. Hitting the gym or going for a run helps people suffering from heartbreak, loss of a loved one, less self confidence, as after training they report feeling good and positive by investing their energy in a positive place.

How Does Exercise Help?

Aerobic exercises like running, cycling, swimming are well known to reduce symptoms related to mental disturbances like stress and anxiety. Regular aerobic exercise improves blood flow to the brain and helps to strengthen brain health and memory. The increase in core temperature during aerobic exercise results in calmer mood after the activity. Aerobic activity even for 20mins a day results in positive mood and thoughts throughout the day.

How Does Weightlifting Help Build Mental Strength?

Weight training uses weights or external resistance for exercising. It is used to train and strengthen muscles, improve posture and bone structure, boost metabolism and help in better sleep. Lesser known benefits about lifting weights includes improvement in mind-muscle coordination which is an essential part of exercise. This coordination is associated with cognitive function of executive functioning which manages our command and control skills. Lifting weights also improves memory and cognition related tasks. It results in a realistic pattern of thinking, taking smart decisions and regulating behaviour. It also provides a sense of self efficacy and boosts confidence.

Resistance training is a highly effective way to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression. Because what benefits the body, benefits the brain. Just like lifting weights causes muscle gain, the brain has the capacity to change itself in response to internal as well as external influences, which is known as neuroplasticity. In the presence of weight lifting, the brain becomes active, hormone production and neuron production increases. All of this together improves mental strength and helps the individual recover from anxiety or depression along with the therapy.

Weight lifting teaches you to live in the present and be more mindful as lifting requires a lot of concentration and attention in the moment. Setting up the correct posture, controlling the body and performing the movement requires a lot of focus and concentration. Make sure to club weight training in your routine for a strong body and stronger mental health.

How To Get Started With Weight Lifting

  • Aim to weight train for 30-45 mins, 3 times a week
  • Start with low weights and focus on posture and consistency
  • Train at low to moderate intensity for maximum benefit from weight training
  • Do not miss out on 7-8 hours of sleep, meditation and a balanced diet which contributes majorly to staying fit

Even if you’re currently not depressed or anxious or have any goals of muscle building, I would urge you to consider weight training for all of it’s added benefit. Quick Fixes & Exercises To Prevent Aching Elbows

aching elbowsThe elbow joint is a very important joint but is often overlooked because it is not a weight bearing joint and doesn’t develop arthritis generally as we grow old. But it can undergo wear and tear, get injured and the pain in the area can keep us from the daily activities of living like dressing up, combing, cooking, eating food, typing or any activity that requires use of the upper limb. So, taking care of this joint is equally important and one should not ignore the early signs of discomfort. Before we go into the remedies for aching elbows, let’s look at some common conditions of the elbow joints:

  • Tendonitis – inflammation of the tendons around the joints
  • Bursitis – affects bursae, small sacs of fluid that protect the joints
  • Tennis Elbow – lateral epicondylitis (affects the outer tendons of the elbow)
  • Golfer’s Elbow – medial epicondylitis (affects the inner tendons of the elbow)
  • Osteoarthritis – affects the cartilage, a type of connective tissue found in joints.
  • Ligament sprains and strains – may be the result of repeated stress or some trauma
  • Dislocation or Fracture of the Elbow – may occur as a result of an injury to the elbow.

Home Remedies For Aching Elbows

  1. Rest: If you’ve had an injury, best is to give the joint rest and let it heal naturally. Avoid any movements that put pressure on the muscles around the elbow and cause or aggravate the pain.
  2. Ice- Packs: Applying an ice pack around the painful area can help reduce pain and swelling. You can apply ice packs 2-3 times daily for 10 minutes.
  3. Use a Sling: If you’re not able to actively rest the arm, use an elbow sling to prevent movement of the arm and give adequate support. This will help reduce the inflammation and pain in the area. You can also remove the sling after regular intervals and perform gentle movements.
  4. Massage: Gently massaging around the area, with your thumbs, will improve blood circulation in the area, reducing pain and inflammation.
  5. Simple Exercises – Exercises that gently stretch the muscles around the elbow joint, give relief from pain. The stretches include –
    • Wrist Extensor stretch – While standing, arms extended forwards at 90 degrees, flex one wrist and push it with the other hand (both ways- palm facing upwards- forearm supinated and then downwards- forearm pronated). Hold the stretch for 4-5 seconds and relax. You can do 3-5 reps and 1-3 sets each side.
    • Wrist Flexor stretch – While standing, arm extended forwards extend one wrist and push it gently with the other hand (both ways- palm facing upwards- forearm supinated and then downwards- forearm pronated). Hold the stretch for 4-5 seconds and relax. You can do 3-5 reps and 1-3 sets each side.
    • Pronation and Supination of the forearm – Sitting on a chair with your arm bent at 90 degrees, turn your palms inwards (palm down – pronation) and then outwards (palm up- supination). At the end of the movement use your other hand to assist and apple gently pressure). Hold the stretch for 4-5 seconds and relax. You can do 3-5 reps and 1-3 sets each side.
    • Working the finger flexors – The finger flexors originate from above the elbow, so stretching them also gives relief. Sitting on a chair, rest your hand on the thigh and gently start lifting your fingers one by one, starting from your index finger, using the other hand to gently assist the stretching movement. Hold the stretch for 1-3 seconds and relax. You can do 3-5 reps and 1-3 sets each side.

How Can You Prevent Elbow Pain?

1. Strengthen your Elbows: Having strong muscles around the elbow joints, helps prevent injuries and undue stress on the joint. You can do various strengthening exercises using dumbbells, resistance bands or even using your own body weight. The exercises include:

  • Elbow Flexion
  • Elbow Extension
  • Supination of the forearm
  • Pronation of the forearm
  • Wrist strengthening exercises
  • Shoulder strengthening exercises

You can start with 10 reps, 3 sets each and then gradually progress further.

2. Maintain proper posture and use support while doing heavy workouts

3. Use the correct techniques or positions while doing activities that can cause strain to your elbows.

4. Avoid injuries: Following a proper warm up and cool down routine helps to avoid sports injuries.

5. Healthy diet: Including Calcium rich food and Vit D, helps build stronger bones.

While doing workouts, either at home or in a fitness center, it is very important to take control of your body and do everything you can to prevent any injuries, rather than going through the painful process of getting injured and then taking care of it. For best results, it is better to seek guidance from a physiotherapist or a trained fitness expert and then later do the exercises on your own.

Sugar Cravings and How to Curb Them

sugar cravings

Do you grab a candy bar to cope with your afternoon slump and then reach for a cola to get out of your post-slump slump? Or have you realized that munching sugary snacks makes you crave for more?

Why Should We Reduce Sugar?

  • Sugar is called an empty calorie, which means it is a calorie without any nutrients.
  • Health professionals believe that it is one of the main reasons why it can be so hard to stick to a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight.
  • There is a belief that sugar restriction is only for diabetics but the facts are quite different. Excess sugar can lead to coronary heart disease, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, PCOS, low immunity, cancer, bone issues, etc.
  • Another effect of excessive sugar intake changes in microbial flora. This can lead to bloating, GI issues, heartburn, etc.

The World Health Organization has recently lowered the recommendation for sugar from 10% to no more than 5% of the total caloric intake. This translates to 4-5 teaspoons a day for a 2000 kcal diet.

You must wonder why we keep talking about excess sugar all the time. This is because sugar is addictive in nature. The more you have, the more you want. The taste of sugar releases endorphins that calm and relax us, offering a natural high.

Causes of sugar cravings

  • Habitual: Habit can be one of the major causes which are formed deep within our brains
  • Hard workout: Many people are likely to experience sugar cravings following a workout. As depleted glycogen stores are likely to crave sugar to replenish it.
  • Your diet is not right: The more you eat these simple sugary things, the more your brain will want them, which can continue the vicious cycle of sugar cravings.
  • Use of artificial sweetener: The use of these alternative sugars may save on calories but they trick the mind into thinking you ate something that was extremely sweet or far sweeter than sugar. For this reason, the brain will crave for food or beverages that are as sweet as what you had.
  • Poor sleep quality: The body needs a certain amount of REM and deep sleep as a way to replenish the mind and body. When you have inadequate amount of sleep, the body is susceptible to craving sweets the next day.
  • Stress: High levels of stress can also cause craving. As stress increases cortisol levels, serotonin, which is a calming and relaxing hormone, is released by sugar.
  • Meal skipping: Skipping meals can cause you to have sugar cravings due to reduced blood sugar levels.
  • Boredom: It’s another reason why we end up eating sugar or sugary products.
  • Sugar is hiding everywhere: Sugar is hiding in many foods you would never think of as sweet from bread to pasta.
  • Few deficiencies which can cause sugar cravings include:
    1. Chromium deficiency can cause intense cravings for sugar.
    2. If your body lacks Magnesium, you may have strong cravings for sugar products especially chocolates.
    3. Zinc deficiency can result in low insulin levels which may lead to sugar cravings

How to stop sugar Cravings

  • Give in a little: Eat a bit of what you are craving for. Enjoying a little of what you love can help you steer clear of feeling denied.
  • Try to combine foods: When you crave for sweets, try combining it with a healthy option. For instance, strawberry dipped in chocolate sauce.
  • Grab some gum: If you want to avoid giving in to a sugar craving completely try a stick of gum.
  • Reach for a fruit: Keep fruit handy when a sugar craving hits! Fruits are rich in fibres and nutrients along with some awesome sweetness!
  • Choose quality over quantity: If you crave for sugar, pick a healthier option but keep it small. For instance, dark chocolate with 70% cocoa.
  • Eat regularly: Eating meals at regular intervals keeps your blood sugar level stable and help in avoiding irrational eating behavior.
  • Skip artificial sweeteners: as they tend to increase your cravings
  • Get support: Stress, depression or anger turns people to eating sweet foods. But food doesn’t solve emotional issues.
  • Drink a glass of water: Some people say that dehydration can cause sugar cravings
  • Eat more protein: as proteins increase your satiety level.
  • Sleep well: It is important for overall health and may help prevent cravings.
  • Get up and go: When you feel sugar cravings, get up and go for a walk. You can also phone a friend or take a bath to relax.
  • Avoid certain triggers like places or activities that induce sugar cravings.
  • Eat more fibers: They help to slow the absorption of the food you eat and also help to curb sugar cravings
  • Keep and maintain a list of reasons why you want to eat healthy as its hard to remember when you get the cravings.

Few food options to opt for when you get sugar cravings

  • Fruits: contain sugar along with lots of healthy nutrients
  • Berries: taste sweet but are high in fibre and low in sugar
  • Dark Chocolate: swap regular chocolate with dark chocolate
  • Snack Bars: are made of whole foods and can make a healthy sweet treat
  • Chia Seeds: are high in soluble fibre so you feel fuller for longer
  • Cinnamon: because of its sweet taste and it is healthy
  • Yoghurt: is high in protein and can control appetite and craving
  • Dates: are very sweet and can fix your cravings
  • Sweet Potatoes: sweet in taste and give a feeling of fullness
  • Smoothies: are another healthy nutrient rich option
  • Prunes: are sweet in taste and good for the stomach
  • Trail Mix: has the sweetness of dry fruits and nuts with all their benefits

Do Sugar Detox Diets Work?

Sugar Detox Plans urge you to avoid all sweets. That means all fruits, dairy and refined grains. The idea is to purge your system of sugar. Diet changes like this are too drastic to keep up and you will fall back to your old habits. If you make simple changes to your diet, it is easy to keep them up.

Sugar cravings can be a challenging part of your everyday life. When they set in, they can take over your mind in a hurry. Make these small changes which can go a long way and hopefully, they will help you win the battle against your cravings.

We hope this article helps you reduce sugar cravings and make a positive lifestyle change. If this helped, let us know in the comments below. For more on nutrition, click here. If you need help to curb sugar cravings, speak to an expert by subscribing for GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here.

Taking Ownership Of Diabetes Through Education and Awareness

Diabetes ManagementDiya was a young girl who seemed as active as can be. She trekked, hit the gym, albeit sporadically, had a healthy appetite and as she called it, ‘lived to eat’. At 30, there was a blood donation drive and check-up in the organisation she worked at and here, she was diagnosed with diabetes. There were no other alarm bells ringing; she thought she was healthy! The doctor prescribed medications. She carried on with her life till a shooting pain in the chest made her rethink her lifestyle.

Prakash was detected with Diabetes in his late 30’s. A history of smoking, stress infused work situation, being overweight and a family history of Diabetes made a potent combination which led him to the road to Diabetes. He continued his unchecked lifestyle along with sporadic visits to the general practitioner till he found his vision blurring and a burning pain in his limbs, which made it difficult for him to sleep. Faced with diabetes complications, he knew he had to seek help from the right doctors, eat the right diet and correct his lifestyle before it was too late.

That is the scenario for most people and that is the stealthy attitude of diabetes; it creeps in and hits you. Once diagnosed, either medication is taken or not. Rarely is there a consistent follow-up. Medications tend to plateau after a while and if there is no consultation with doctors regularly, no scheduled blood tests, no nutrition assessments, no exercise patterns, it augurs for something deep and dark. This is seen as the initial concerns with diabetes control. Not everyone takes it critically. But not everyone has access to proper doctors and nutritionists.

Diabetes Is Not Taken As A Serious Disease

Consistency is key for maintaining and even reversal. Yes, in the early stages, a reversal is possible. A diabetes patient needs support, needs family and friends to assist in their journey, as it is a challenge. More than mere support, it is about adherence.

It is about breaking the habit. It is about changing habits. The first feeling when one is diagnosed is shock, helplessness, feeling of depression. As an illness, diabetes is debilitating in the long run as it has an overall effect on almost every part of the body, externally and internally. And yet, it can be controlled, and in some cases, reversed.

But now comes the challenging phase of education i.e. control and solution, and it is not easy. Besides medical advice, traditional indigenous methods are offered, and they have been helpful. Hence, understanding what goes into the treatment of diabetes is crucial.

So let’s look at the aspects of diabetes management.

1. Education

At first, you’ve got to understand the diagnosis – is it Type 1 or Type 2. Understand the various repercussions of the type of diabetes you have. Consult your doctor, read reputed websites for knowledge of diabetes and diabetes management. Listen to conventional wisdom and follow the advice of the doctors. Get on a plan.

2. Nutrition

Nutrition involves two aspects – Medication – those suggested by the doctors and home grown indigenous supplementary methods have also been beneficial. The other aspect is Food – what can be eaten, what can be paired together, and what must be avoided.

Meal composition – high protein, low carbs. Understanding foods with a high glycaemic index (foods that spike up sugar levels in the blood are to be avoided). Another important aspect is the timing of when you eat. Fad diets are not helpful and can be harmful. Sustainable, sensible eating and not temporary ‘diet eating’, one in which you can measure what you eat for a long period of time, is important.

Hydration – drinking water is extremely essential. Essentially, what you ingest can help in lowering possible future microvascular damage and other complications.

3. Control

Diabetes care needs discipline. Controlling diabetes involves complying with a proper course of medication and a healthy living construct. It is imperative that you maintain regular follow-ups with the doctor. Blood work, especially HbA1C levels must be checked every quarter to enable proper diabetes care.

Most doctors complain that follow-ups are low, if any. What has shown progress is that along with medications, the main aspect is weaving exercise into your lifestyle. Walking and light exercise has shown to have tremendous benefits in controlling and lowering HbA1C levels. Recent studies have shown that a 10-minute walk after every meal has proved as beneficial as a 30-minute walk every day.

4. Solution

So how do we control and/or reverse diabetes? Diabetes may be a global pandemic and India has the second highest number of cases, but the solution is simple! It is proper management through medication adherence, education, lifestyle changes, self-monitoring, keeping up with doctor appointments and awareness of the issues that could be faced in the future.

The first step is to take ownership of the disease. This can be achieved through awareness, which happens through education. The medical community and the Diabetes Patient Community on Social Media and other close knit communities or groups ensure that you understand what people are going through, and the solutions that are available. Holistic management of diabetes ensures that the patient with diabetes wins in the game of life. Do not panic. It is easy and definitely do-able. It is not rocket science!
