Dinesh’s Ultimate Trick to Completing the GOQii Trail Challenge

Dinesh Thakur

(L-R) Vishal Gondal, Vandit Panvelkar, Dinesh Thakur after completing the GOQii Trail Challenge

From everything you have heard about the GOQii Trail Challenge, you’re aware that it puts your limits to the test. The endurance event challenges you, shapes you, breaks you and after each step closer to the finish line, it transforms you with an overwhelming sense of joy of having completed the arduous trail! While GTC is not a race, you can’t deny a human’s ambition to fight against all odds, battle time and fatigue and still hold the desire to win. Does completing a 50km trail that snakes through rough terrain within 8 hours seem impossible? Our very own Dinesh Thakur was able to do this after starting 30 minutes late! How did he do it?

Who Is Dinesh Thakur?

Dinesh Thakur has been a part of GOQii since 2014, working in the Logistics Department. He is 31 years of age and lives with his parents in Mumbai. Before the GOQii Trail Challenge, he didn’t have anything specific that he was looking forward to. He just wanted to experience the trail, enjoy nature and get his mind off everything – much like most of us today.

Apart from playing cricket with his colleagues on a daily basis, he wasn’t into any specific activity. He enjoyed it as it helped him alleviate a lot of stress. When the GTC was announced, he decided to walk a total of 7km from his home to the office and back home every day in order to get used to walking. To achieve this, he even locked his bike in the garage, not using it at all.

Unfolding Destiny

During the trail, Dinesh Thakur was not meant to be a participant despite the fact that he trained for it. He was at the venue as a part of the support team. His participation wasn’t planned although he wished to test himself against the trail before him. When the other participants embarked on the trail, he couldn’t just stand there. The will to achieve sparked within him and he incessantly convinced his manager to let him walk too.

Who’d deny a man’s passion? His manager gave him the signal and Dinesh rushed the trail 30 minutes after the other participants. For someone who wanted to reach the finish line first, this was a clear disadvantage. However, it did not deter him and he decided to compensate for his lost time by not taking any breaks throughout the entire trail.

Grit, Guts and Broken Shoes

At this point, Dinesh’s only strategy was to keep walking until he reaches the finish line. He wasn’t geared enough as he didn’t carry a proper pair of shoes as he was only going to volunteer. In fact, he didn’t even carry a bottle of water. He got one at the first checkpoint.

As he reached Checkpoint 3, the sole of his shoes gave way. He had to tie it with a string so that it wouldn’t come apart. Using his wits, he decided to take his shoes off and walk in just socks on flat terrains, saving the shoes for rocky and difficult patches. By the time he reached Checkpoint 4, he was exhausted. He had to request support for an energy bar to fuel him.

With that being his fuel, Dinesh raced on when he came face to face with his competition – another participant who was vying for first place. Dinesh and his competition were neck-to-neck as they inched towards the finish line. His supposed opponent, a little ahead, tried his best to block Dinesh on a narrow path. This continued for quite some time. When they came close to the finish line, Dinesh decided it was all or nothing and gave his opponent a shock by coming from behind, jumping over a bush and landing on the finish line ahead of him. With nothing but grit and guts, Dinesh was the first one to complete the trail in 8hours and 12 minutes.

Recounting the Experience

Dinesh praises the location chosen for the trail. He loved the fresh forest path, the water bodies which he encountered and the encouragement he received from the locals. He says it was a memorable experience and him finishing the trail before anyone was just a cherry on the proverbial cake. In his own words he says, “I never realised when I started and when I completed it. All I knew was that I had to keep walking.”

There are so many things one can take away from this story. Whether you’re ready or not, prepared or unprepared, at the end of it, it is your determination which counts and your willpower which pulls you through. That’s the real trick – your own determination and willpower!

We hope you’re excited for GOQii Trail Challenge 2019! We know we are ready to #BeTheForce!

Do You Know #SuperRunner Samir Singh?

samir singhRunning keeps you fit! It’s a tried, tested and approved fact. Now, whether you’re running to lose weight, catch a bus you’re obviously late for or running away from your problems, at the end of it there will be change. If you must run, can your goals be kicked up a notch? Can they mean something more? One man decided to push the envelope of what’s possibly the ultimate test of strength, endurance and mental fortitude. Have you heard of the Super Runner, yet?

In mid-October, ultra-runner Samir Singh, also known as the Faith Runner, took to challenge his mind and body by attempting to run 10,000km in over 100 days. He calls his run the “Fit India Mission 10000”, a humble dedication to the Fit India Movement. “I think this is the best movement that the Government has started. The movement is inspiring a lot of people to take up fitness as a way of life and I strongly believe in it,” he says in support of the Government initiative for a healthier, fitter India.

It has been around three weeks since he started and has completed approximately 1500km. “I believe in myself. I have dreamt of doing this for a long time and I believe it is possible! I can do it!” said Samir with confidence. For him, it is his self-motivation and passion that keeps him moving. But what drove him to take such a huge step?

Coming from a humble background where his family’s main occupation is farming, Samir managed to come to Mumbai from his hometown Kanaheda in Madhya Pradesh in 2000 in the hope of getting a decent job. He got one with a marketing agency where he was asked to do surveys by interviewing people. In one such survey related to marathons, he got interested in running. It led him to believe that running and winning marathons can not only help him get fit but also earn money.

Samir Singh gave up his sedentary lifestyle and took to running long distances at the age of 35. Prior to embarking on ultra-runs, he started running full marathons. Did a couple of them and even won some of them. His first ultra-race was the Mumbai Ultra (a 12-hour run) where he logged approximately 107 KM in 2015 and 120 Km in 2016 with a podium finish.

Having achieved these feat, he understood his body and how it reacted to stress. His urge to challenge himself further and do something extraordinary kept nudging him and he decided to push himself to do a 10,000km in 100 days. In his first attempt of 10,000km, he unfortunately fell short of just 36km and ran only 9,964.19km.

What is interesting to note is that he started his running career without any fancy gears. Sometimes barefoot and sometimes with make do shoes. His focus was only on running.  He does not have any major nutrition plans and does not take any supplements. He believes in ‘Satvik’ food which is simple, nutritious and less spicy.

Upon hearing this man’s story and his determination to challenge his body, GOQii decided to extend their support to his mission. GOQii has been working with him to ensure that his nutritional needs are met during his journey to spread awareness for the Fit India Movement. GOQii has also helped him choose the right gear to ensure his run is a major success.

super runnerSo far, the Faith Runner shows no signs of slowing down, steadily taking one step forward towards his goals. You can see Samir Singh begin as early as 4:30AM in the morning every day from Girgaum Chowpatty, opposite Wilson College and run all the way till Juhu Beach and back! If you feel motivated after reading this story, lace up your running shoes and join him in running towards a healthier India and a fitter you!

If 100km is too much, you can try joining us for the GOQii Trail Challenge 2019 in December. Get all the details about the beautiful, scenic trail here and gear up for a health retreat that will leave you breathless: www.goqii.com/gtc.

Win a GOQii Stride Within 13 Days in the India Health Quiz

win a GOQii Stride100 days can seem too short to collect all the awesome prizes offered in the GOQii India Health Quiz. But remember – where there is a will, there is a way. Recently, one of our Health Quiz Khiladis was determined enough to win a GOQii Stride by earning 3000 points.

As a runner, she had her eyes set on the prize that would help her achieve her health goals. The GOQii Stride is a shoe tracker which you can clip on your shoelace. It tracks your steps, distance and calories burned irrespective of the activity, has a battery life of 180 days and is water resistant.

What came as a surprise was that she was able to win a GOQii Stride within 13 days only. Some might consider 13 to be an unlucky number but for this Khiladi, it was a moment of victory! Does accumulating 3000 points within 13 days sound impossible? It is not! Here’s how she did it!

Doing the Math

In order to collect 3000 points, a person will have to participate in around 60 quizzes, provided he/she gets 50 points in all the quizzes. This ideally means that the person will have to participate in more quizzes and to participate, you will need more keys and more lives!

Collecting Keys and Lives

When you download the GOQii App, you begin with 15 keys and 5 lives. This particular player had done the math! As an active person, she used to clock in 6000 steps every day to earn 4 keys. Add that to the 3 keys one receives as a daily bonus, and the total comes up to 7 keys daily. Then the player took the HRA test to earn an additional 10 keys and sometimes even purchased 1 key using 200 GOQii Cash.

She began inviting her friends using her invite code and was able to invite 5 friends. This gave her 5 extra lives for each that joined. She even got them to participate and play quizzes. This bumped up her total lives to approximately 50.

With all the gear she needed, she diligently participated in the GOQii India Health Quiz every day!

Playing and Winning the GOQii Stride

On the first day of the quiz, she used up all her 15 keys. Following that, she tried her best to participate in 8-9 quizzes a day. Here’s what her scores looked like:

  • 50 points in 30 quizzes
  • 30 points in 40 quizzes
  • 15 points in 10 quizzes
  • 5 points in 30 quizzes

She played 110 quizzes, sometimes scoring a straight A and sometimes she had to use a life. In some cases, she was eliminated in the second round itself. Despite minor losses, this technique and level of preparedness, helped her win a GOQii Stride within 13 days.

She is currently using the GOQii Stride and is enjoying the GOQii Plus Coaching as well! That’s it! Winning the GOQii Stride is not that difficult. Though 100 days seem less, a little effort and a lot of math can go a long way! She is currently playing to win the GOQii Vital tracker which monitors heart rate and blood pressure.

Don’t forget that there are Quizzes held every 30 minutes. So invite your friends, participate and win big!

Try using this technique and let us know if you were able to win the GOQii Stride. Is there a specific technique you are using? Let us know in the comments below!

Let’s see how this user won a backpack within 1 day!

Doing the Math

If the target points required to win a backpack is 500, then ideally you will have to play 10 quizzes and get all the answers right. But you only begin with 15 keys to participate in the quiz. It is possible to not get all the answers right or even get eliminated in the first round.

There’s a possibility that you might have to play around 20+ quizzes. So how exactly did this player get more keys?

Collecting Keys

A new player begins with 15 keys. To get more, this player engaged in the various activities required to earn more keys. He began with completing his 6000 steps target and collected 4 keys.

He then proceeded to take the HRA test within the app to earn an additional 10 keys. This brought the total number of keys he possessed up to 29, which meant he could play 29 quizzes. He also went on to invite 2 of his friends to download the app using his referral code. This gave him 10 additional lives as well.

Playing and Claiming a Backpack

Once he was geared up with everything he needed, he played 21 quizzes. He scored:

  • 50 in 4 quizzes
  • 30 in 7 quizzes

This brought his total points to 500. During the course of the quiz, he lost some lives but was able to win a backpack within 1 day using this technique! Although he was informed that the backpack would reach him within 2 weeks, he was happy to receive it within 6 working days.
