11 Reasons Why You Should Include An Avocado In Your Diet

avocado

Avocado is a pear shaped, stone fruit, grown specifically in warm climates. It is also called as butter fruit in India because of its creamy and buttery texture. It is a unique super food. As most fruits are high in Carbohydrates, Avocado is high in healthy fats, being the only fruit which provides substantial amounts of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) that do not stack up as calories but help in the lubrication of joints and aid weight loss as well.

How Can An Avocado Improve Your Health?

  1. Immensely nutritious: They are naturally nutrient-dense and contain a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals. Approximately 100 gms of Avocado contains 160 calories, 14.7g of fat, 7mg sodium, Carbohydrates: 8.5g of which fiber is 6.7g (net carb is 1.8 g appx), 6.7g fiber, 0.7g of sugars and 2g of protein. They also contain other nutrients such as Vit K, Vit E, Vit C, Folate, Potassium and some B vitamins.
  2. Is a heart healthy fruit: Avocados are rich in antioxidants and monounsaturated fats which keep the heart healthy and reduce the risk of stroke. Eating avocado can also regulate LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, as well as blood triglycerides.
  3. Helps regulate Blood Pressure: Avocados are a very good source of potassium. It is low in sodium, contains 3 times more potassium than banana and helps control blood pressure.
  4. Aids weight loss: It is highly satiating which keeps us fuller for longer, delaying hunger pangs.
  5. Good for the eyes: Avocado is high in Beta carotene and antioxidants which helps improve eyesight. It also contains lutein and zeaxanthin which lowers or delays the risk of cataract.
  6. Helps absorb nutrients: Avocados can act as a “nutrient booster” by aiding the increase in absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, D, K and E. Say, if we add Avocado or avocado oil in a bowl of salad or salsa, it would improve its antioxidants absorption.
  7. Avocados are great for pregnant mothers and also boosts foetal development: It is high in folate, potassium, fiber, monounsaturated fats, and lipid-soluble antioxidants — all of these improves maternal health, quality of breast milk and healthy foetal development.
  8. Packed with Fibers: An avocado is a high fiber food with approximately 6-7 grams per 100 gms of fruit. Fiber has important benefits for weight loss, relief in constipation and improving metabolic health. It also lowers the risk of colon cancer.
  9. May prevent cancer: Some studies show that a high-MUFA diet can protect against the risk of certain cancers, including prostate, colon, stomach, pancreatic, and cervical cancers. Avocados are not only beneficial in preventing cancers, they may also have a role in cancer treatment. In fact, some researchers have shown that the phytochemicals in avocados may selectively inhibit cancer cell and pre-cancerous cell growth.
  10. Improves Arthritic pain: Saponins found in avocados are associated with relief in knee pain or hip pain occurring due to osteoarthritis.
  11. Keeps the skin healthy and glowing: It is rich in vitamin E and C – both of these are essential in keeping the skin healthy and glowing.

Lastly, Avocados are easily available and incredibly delicious. They can be paired with anything from salads to soups, smoothies and various other recipes. To keep a cut avocado fresh, you can add lemon juice to it which slows down the oxidation process, preventing it from turning brown.

So what are you waiting for? If any of these benefits appealed to you, head out and stock up on your avocado supply but do consult your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian before making any changes to your diet. Do leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The One Practice That Can Change Your Life

As she drifts between sleep and wakefulness, her mind brings along a sense of dread; just like a faithful pet would bring a rag doll, and wait, panting in anticipation, for her to wake up. Even before she can start to tell the difference between her own snores and the chimes of the alarm clock, the phone nudges her with notifications about the never-ending list of things to be done. She almost falls off her bed, phone in hand, stumbling from one task to another, trying to keep up with the demands of the day. She races against time, determined to make progress. But as the clock ticks on, her attempts to swim through the sea of distractions, hardly seem to work. She finishes her day feeling exhausted, with a nagging sense that very little has been achieved.

If such stress laden days, sound all too familiar, you are not alone. But knowing that many of us feel this way, hardly brings any reprieve from reality. However, one simple daily practice has the potential to change this experience quite drastically.

How Would You Like Your Day To Begin?

Before we talk about that practice, let’s look at what kind of day we would ideally like to spend – Personally, I would like to wake up feeling rested and refreshed, feeling excited and hopeful and in spite of the zillion things that need to be completed during the day, I would like to feel at peace with myself. Does that resonate with you? If it does, read ahead!

What’s That ONE Thing?

The one activity that could change the way we start and end our day, is Meditation. According to the Buddhist definition ‘Meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things.’

It is the one activity which will not change the circumstances or the people of your life, but has the potential to change the weather inside your mind. In 10 to 20 minutes, it could help your internal weather to change from grey, cloudy and chilly to pleasantly sunny, warm and hopeful.

How Meditation Helps!

When you meditate regularly, you get better at holding your attention in the present moment. This automatically leads to less distraction. It also improves your ability to process sensory information. Personally, I find myself more capable of holding back angry retorts and loosening the hold of obsessive thoughts, much more now than when meditation was not a part of my life. This is not surprising given the research which shows that regular meditation enlarges the pre-frontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for logical thinking, and decision making) and reduces the Amygdala activation (the key brain structure known as the emotional or fear center of the brain), leading to improved emotional regulation! According to Dr. Keith Holden, in his book “Power of the mind in health and healing”- “Regular meditation may even help prevent age-related brain atrophy, which has the potential to protect against memory loss and improve brain function as you age.”

In broader terms, a regular meditation practice helps you feel better about yourself, bring more harmony in your relationships, develop your ability to perform better at work, improve your creative thinking and foster the ability to stay calm in the face of uncertainty, not to mention adding to your overall sense of wellbeing.meditation

Yes, You Are Already Good At It!

Before I started practicing meditation, I used to think that it is meant for people who have a lot of time at hand. For someone who has retired from work life for instance, or someone who doesn’t have much to do. But I couldn’t be farther from the truth on both fronts! (being retired from work life doesn’t mean one is not busy). Meditation is beneficial for every single one of us. The busier you are, the more beneficial it is for you. You may not realise it, but whenever you are in a state of “flow” i.e. when you feel happily engrossed in a task, that you feel competent to do, and enjoy doing – you are meditating; you are meditating on that one task, with absolute focused attention and there’s this feeling of being in a different plane. You are meditating every time you sleep deeply. So, you are already practicing certain forms of meditation in your life and are good at it. Hence saying that “meditation is not my cup of tea” doesn’t hold water (or tea).

Conclusion

There’s no aspect of your life that goes untouched by the benefits of meditation. As an emotional wellness coach and counsellor, I get to hear hundreds of mental health concerns from people on a regular basis. No matter what the complaints are, meditation almost always features in the list of ways in which people can overcome those issues and move towards short term and long mental wellness. So, when do you plan to start?

We hope this article helps you! If you want to begin your meditation practice, check out some interesting articles on Healthy Reads. To get more meditation tips from a certified expert, subscribe to personalized coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

Why Self Care Is Important While Managing Diabetes

managing diabetesHow often have we come across friends or family members with diabetes, taking the condition lightly, being happily dependent on prescribed medications? But, the fact is that diabetes can be controlled or reversed if adhered to self care along with the prescribed medications.

There have been many cases of individuals managing diabetes well by participating in their own care along with lifestyle modifications. Despite this fact, compliance or adherence to these activities has been found to be low, especially when looking at long-term changes.

Some Interesting Statistics on Diabetes

According to the most recent International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data, 537 million people, approximately 10% of all people aged 20-79% in the world, were living with diabetes as of 2021.

Statistics show that while the world diabetes rate is growing at 57%, India is leaping ahead at 74%. In India, 10.4% of the adult population has diabetes.  India has a diabetic population of 85 million and almost 49% of the population go undetected. Another 50 million are in the developing stage of diabetes. The country’s national average of HbA1c stands at an alarming rate of 8.5%. Given all these statistics, no wonder India has been labelled as the Diabetes Capital of the World.

As per GOQii’s latest IndiaFit Report,  Over the last 5 years, people suffering from  lifestyle diseases, namely Diabetes, have seen an increase from 7.9% in 2017 to 13.2% in 2021. The Report indicates that men have greater rates of diabetes at 14.5% vs Women. The study was done among over 5 million users.

Diabetes is influenced by a number of variables which include a bad diet, stress, and lack of physical exercise and quality sleep. Obesity, advancing age, and a poor diet are all factors that contribute to Diabetes. Given the above data, and the fact that self care along with guidance and holistic lifestyle modification are key for managing diabetes, GOQii has launched this Diabetes Care programme.

What Is the GOQii Diabetes Care Program?

The GOQii Diabetes Care Program aims at helping people with Diabetes take ownership of their health. The price of the programme is extremely affordable, given that if one has to buy these various components separately, it will cost an individual Rs 14,999/-

Once enrolled into the Diabetes Care Programme, the patient gets trusted and trained assistance for the Diabetes Journey to improve diabetes outcomes i.e. lower blood sugar levels, HbA1c and  lipid levels, among other metabolic parameters which include losing weight, reducing BMI and improving energy levels.

Beat the Heat With Simple Lifestyle Changes!

lifestyle changes for summer

If you’re a kid, summer has to be the most awaited season for you as it spells the beginning of vacations! As an adult, there are many things you need to worry about. There are things such as dehydration, heatstroke and a few other precautions you need to maintain whether you’re indoors or outdoors.

What Happens to Your Body During Summer?

Your body undergoes so many changes in the heat. For instance:

  • Heatstroke: Puts pressure on your heart
  • Dehydration: Causes your brain to shrink, causes headaches, confusion, itchy eyes, heart palpitations and sleep issues
  • Muscle cramps and lethargy: because your body uses energy to lower your body temperature
  • Itchiness: under or around the eyes, around your body because of sweat being stuck under your skin
  • Nausea: due to the rise in body temperature
  • Low blood pressure as your heart has to work harder to supply blood to the body due to the heat.

The above issues can be fixed or avoided by adopting very simple lifestyle changes to beat the heat!

1. Hair Care

Your scalp sweats more during summer. Your hair may become frizzy and dry. While washing your hair every day might seem like a good idea, it may remove natural oils from your scalp which might result in dandruff and hair loss. You can try massaging your head to increase blood flow to your hair roots. Wash your hair every alternate day.

2. Face and Skincare

The sun’s harmful UV Rays may damage your skin resulting in brown spots, tanning and wrinkles if proper care isn’t taken. It is imperative to avoid the sun between 10 am to 2 pm as the temperature is quite high at noon. If you must venture out, use a sunscreen and appropriate protection to avoid any damage.

The best time to venture out during summer is either early in the morning or late evening as exposure to the sun is also important to strengthen bones and improve immunity as well as correcting sleep and mood.

3. Clothing

Choosing the right clothes will help you deal with the summer heat properly! Light colors are the way to go. Avoid dark colors and stick to cotton clothes or khadi which has the ability to absorb heat and cool down by itself. Avoid silk, nylon and other fabrics that absorb heat and store it.

4. Hydration

This is the key to stay healthy during summer! As mentioned above, dehydration can cause a lot of health issues. Drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day. Always have a bottle of water handy and keep sipping even if you aren’t thirsty.

You can also opt for coconut water, fresh fruit juices, sugarcane juice, herbal iced tea, buttermilk, or yoghurt. You can make your own natural drink by adding salt, a piece of jaggery, basil seeds, or mint/lemon drops to your water to replenish your body with electrolytes.

Foods That Help You Beat the Heat

  • Watermelon: When your body needs hydration, watermelon is the fruit to go to! It contains 90% water, is rich in Vitamin A and C. It helps you stay hydrated, protects your heart circulating system and acts against muscle and headaches.
  • Cucumber: acts as a natural body coolant, reducing body heat. It also helps you stay hydrated as it contains 95% water and it is rich in copper, potassium, vitamin B, C, K and Manganese.
  • Onion: One must carry an onion in a pocket to beat the summer heat. Onion acts as a body coolant by helping the body temperature cool down quickly and prevent a heat stroke. It can be consumed raw or added to a salad which can protect you from many diseases and infections. If you face nose bleeding issues during summer, inhale an onion to stop the bleeding.
  • Coconut Water: is loaded with Vitamin A, C and minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese and magnesium. It helps you stay hydrated with these essentials nutrients.
  • Basil Seeds: These small seeds have wonderful cooling effects. It improves hair and skin health and prevents diseases due to its anti-inflammation, antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
  • Yoghurt: strengthens the gut and improves immunity. 2-3 servings of yoghurt or curd can do wonders for your body. To enhance its benefits, add berries to yoghurt or consume either Lassi or buttermilk.
  • Barley Water: with a drop of lemon is an excellent summer coolant. It also cures urinary tract infection. You can either drink this cold or warm to replenish yourself with a good amount of fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Foods to Avoid During Summer

The scorching summer heat affects the digestive system severely. It’s best to avoid certain foods.

  • Junk Foods: can cause indigestion and food poisoning
  • Heaty Foods: Avoid red meats and spices such as nutmeg, chillies, ginger, pepper and cinnamon that generate too much heat
  • Dairy Foods: Skip high fat dairy foods such as cheese or ghee that might upset the stomach. Their high fat content may also result in pimples on the face.
  • Hot Beverages: Avoid tea, coffee and aerated drinks that leave you dehydrated and affect the kidneys.

Incorporate these changes and you’re all geared to beat the heat this Summer! For more summer tips, check out Healthy Reads or ask a GOQii Coach by subscribing for personalized health coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr
