A Complete Guide To The Benefits Of Oil Pulling

oil pullingImmunity has always been a cornerstone of a healthy and disease-free body. One ancient Ayurvedic practice that plays a significant role in enhancing immunity and promoting overall health is oil pulling.

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling, known as Kalava in Ayurveda, is an age-old practice that has been used for centuries to improve oral health and boost immunity. This method is believed to help prevent more than thirty systemic diseases when practiced regularly.

The oral cavity harbors billions of microorganisms, some of which contribute to the development of systemic diseases. Oil pulling involves swishing edible oil around the mouth continuously for 20 minutes, similar to using a mouthwash. According to Ayurveda, the tongue is connected to every organ in the body. Swishing oil in the mouth for an extended period draws out impurities before they can recirculate and spread throughout the body.

How To Do It?

Oil pulling is simple, has no side effects, and requires just one ingredient. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Take 1 tbsp of coconut oil.
  2. Swish it around in your mouth, between teeth, over gums, tongue, towards the cheeks for 20 minutes.
  3. Spit out the oil and rinse your mouth well with water.

Caution: Oil may thicken and clog your drain, so it’s best to spit it into a dustbin. Also, children should avoid this practice as they may accidentally swallow the oil.

If you find it difficult to swish oil for the full 20 minutes initially, start with 5 minutes and gradually build up to 15–20 minutes. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has proven anti-inflammatory properties and can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The best time to practice oil pulling is early morning before drinking water, as the body detoxifies during sleep, and the tongue gets coated with a white film full of toxins and microbes.

Benefits Of Oil Pulling On Oral Health

Oil pulling is highly beneficial for oral hygiene as it reduces the number of harmful bacteria in the mouth. It is particularly helpful for conditions such as:

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Plaque
  • Cavities
  • Oral candidiasis
  • Gingivitis
  • Tooth pain
  • Dry mouth, sore throat and chapped lips
  • Whitening teeth, pinker lips and healthier gums

Benefits For The Skin

Oil pulling not only benefits your oral health but also positively impacts your skin by exercising your facial muscles and encouraging blood flow to your face. This practice can:

  • Reduce wrinkles, fine lines, dry face and other signs of aging
  • Improve skin elasticity
  • Reduce double chin
  • Define your jawline

Additional Benefits

Beyond oral and skin health, oil pulling offers several other advantages, including:

  • Improving gut health, metabolism, digestion, and immunity
  • Detoxifying the mouth and body
  • Enhancing energy levels and sleep quality
  • Balancing hormones
  • Reducing acne, eczema, psoriasis and other skin problems
  • Alleviating headaches and migraine
  • Providing relief from stiff joints and allergies

Managing Nocturnal Itch and Discomfort in Atopic Dermatitis: Strategies for Better Sleep

Atopic Dermatitis is a chronically itchy condition that can be both discomforting and distressing. The persistent itchiness, which often worsens at night, can prevent individuals from getting a peaceful and restful sleep after a tiring day. Imagine constantly feeling the urge to scratch throughout the night, leading to increased redness, bruises, cuts, and bleeds. This burdensome itch, coupled with incomplete sleep, can be exhausting for those suffering from atopic dermatitis.

Maintaining the skin’s moisture levels throughout the night is crucial, as disturbed sleep can negatively affect day-to-day activities, social life, and work life, leading to a lack of enthusiasm. The relentless itch not only exacerbates atopic dermatitis but also impacts an individual’s mental health.

Preparing and following a bedtime ritual can be extremely beneficial in such cases. Simple habits can drastically improve sleep patterns and reduce itching. These habits can include taking a nightly dose of prescribed medication, regular and repeated moisturization, and using prescription-strength cream on inflamed areas. Wearing covered cotton clothing or nightwear helps retain the skin’s moisture levels and makes the itchy areas less accessible at night. Keeping nails short and trimmed helps prevent damage from scratching and reduces the risk of secondary infections on scratch marks. Light yoga asanas before sleep can help alleviate mental stress and calm the mind.

Small changes can make a significant difference in managing atopic dermatitis and improving the quality of life for those affected.

Managing Atopic Dermatitis (AD) Through Climate Changes

Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and complex disease that requires consistent treatment and lifestyle adjustments. Regular moisturizing is essential, but it’s equally important to adapt skincare routines to surrounding climatic changes.

The outer skin barrier in individuals with AD becomes delicate and sensitized, making it highly susceptible to environmental changes. You might wonder, is a hot or cold climate better for AD? The answer is neither. Equal care and measures must be taken in both extremes to protect the skin barrier and retain moisture.

In summer, the weather is hot and often humid, causing people to perspire throughout the day. For someone with AD, dryness may not be a major issue, but constant perspiration can be problematic. The salts in sweat can irritate the skin and trigger flare-ups. Moreover, the heat and humidity can further sensitize the skin, making it redder and more prone to flares. Heat rash and secondary infections on sensitized skin are not uncommon during this season.

In winter, the scenario changes completely. The weather is dry and cold, leading to extreme dryness. The dry air dehydrates the skin further, making regular and repeated moisturizing crucial. Failing to do so can trigger a flare-up. For individuals working or sleeping in a cold environment, such as an air-conditioned room, using a humidifier next to the bed or desk can help prevent moisture loss and keep the skin hydrated.

Each climatic variation comes with its own challenges, requiring extreme care for individuals with AD. Regardless of the season, consistent and tailored skincare routines are necessary to manage symptoms and protect the skin barrier.

Top 5 Foods To Fight Wrinkles And Premature Aging

We all want healthy and glowing skin but do you know that your skin reflects what you eat? Healthy skin needs nutrients, a healthy diet, enough water and good sleep. When these aspects are balanced, it shows on our skin. Wrinkles are a sign of ageing. We can’t stop or avoid it but with healthy food and lifestyle, we can delay it. When it comes to premature aging or wrinkles, it happens due to Sun damage and loss of collagen and elastin. These two proteins take care of our skin and keep it healthy, young and firm.

When UV rays hit our skin, it reduces the production of collagen and elastin. It increases the production of free radicals and premature aging. As we age, the skin starts losing its firmness and elasticity. Other factors that contribute to the process are pollution, smoking, stress, dehydration, lack of sleep and unhealthy food habits.

Which Foods Help Fight Wrinkles and Premature Aging?

  1. Avocado: is a fruit with healthy fats. It has fiber and many nutrients like Folate, Magnesium, Potassium, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Vitamin E aids skin nourishment, reduces scars and fights free radicals. Avocado is high in the antioxidant glutathione, which helps the body to detoxify and keeps skin clear of acne and wrinkles.

Those are rich in Flavonoids, Vitamins and Polyphenol. So berries are perfect food to fight wrinkles and fine lines. Berries not only help in reducing wrinkles but also help in the regeneration of new skin cells. Add berries to your breakfast or morning smoothies.
  3. Buckwheat: It is gluten free, rich in fiber, Iron, provides B1, is a rich source of Magnesium and Calcium, Folate, helps in heart health and controls blood sugar levels and also reduces the signs of premature aging. It has Bioflavonoid Rutin which helps to maintain the production of collagen in the skin and encourage the body’s utilization of Vitamin C.
  4. Papaya: is rich in a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, C, K and E, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Vitamin B. These help to improve skin elasticity and minimize the fine lines and wrinkles. Papaya is rich in the enzyme papain and chymopapain which helps to reduce inflammation. It helps to reduce acne by removing dead skin cells, and remove damaged keratin which can build up on the skin and form small bumps.
  5. Sweet Potatoes: are rich in Vitamin A, B, C, D, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Thiamine, Zinc. It has the antioxidant beta-carotene which is converted into Vitamin A and helps in restoring skin elasticity, prompts skin cell turnover, which means healthy glowing skin. The Vitamin C and E in it helps in protection of skin from free radicals and keeps complexion radiant. Both the Vitamins are crucial to keep skin healthy, glowing and supple. Vitamin C boosts collagen and promotes tightening of skin.

Above are the few foods which help protect our skin from wrinkles and premature aging. In addition to including these foods to your diet, make sure that you have healthy fats, a variety of veggies and fruits, especially different colour veggies and fruits. Keep yourself well hydrated, do regular exercise, learn to manage stress and sleep well.

Reduce the consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, preserved canned food and processed food. Our body does not have a voice but it talks to us through signs and symptoms, so pay attention to the health of the skin to be healthy and fit.
