Choose the right activity to stay fit

fitness-training

Who does not like to look good and fit? Everyone does. Off late you are also finding many who are conscious about wanting to be active. Many are obsessed with losing weight. All are aware that these changes will not occur overnight and hence exercising is very important.

Exercising regularly is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. It lowers your risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and high blood pressure. It can also tone your figure and improve your sleep. Not only is exercise good for your body, it’s also good for your mind, mood and memory. Walking, doing household chores, climbing the stairs, playing a sport or dancing the night away are all good examples of being active.

Being physically active has other advantages such as easing depression, relieving stress and anxiety, enhancing one’s self esteem and improving one’s overall outlook towards life. You don’t have to spend long, boring hours in a gym to reap these benefits. Whatever your age, health limitations or fitness levels, you can develop an exercise program that’s fun and rewarding and fits well within your life parameters.

If you’re not ready to commit to a structured exercise program, think about physical activity as a lifestyle choice rather than a single task to check off your to-do list. Look at your daily routine and consider ways to sneak in an activity here and there. Even very small activities can add up over the course of a day.

Having said the above, making the right choice of exercise goes a long way in helping one be fit. Making some random choice of exercises can prove to become a deterrent towards you getting fit.

Let me sight few instances of wrong choice of exercises-

 1) A person who is on the extreme heavy side (Overweight) should ideally not opt for running as an exercise as it requires to expend more energy and also running will put undue pressure on the joints which will lead to joint damage and injuries.

2) An osteoporotic man who is over 50 years old going to gym to lift weights. Though it is commendable that he is trying to stay active at his age but, lifting heavy weights despite osteoporosis is just straining the joints further.

Another important aspect to take care is never overdo it.

Research has shown that mild to moderate activity is enough to change your life for the better. You don’t have to sweat buckets or run a single step. Moderate activity means:

  1. That you breathe a little heavier than normal, but are not out of breath. For example, you should be able to chat with your walking partner, but not easily sing a song.
  2. That your body feels warmer as you move, but not overheated or very sweaty.

Therefore, making the right choice of exercise is a must.

The factors that are essential for choosing exercises:

-Purpose of exercise

-Age to perform exercises

-Weight

-Interest to exercise

-Medical condition if any

-Daily Routine to be able to spare time for exercise

-Daily Nutritional intake

Always, remember gym is not the only option for one to exercise and stay active. There are exercises that can be done at home, office or a park in the outdoors depending on your interest and purpose.

You can stay Active

-By going for a simple walk

-Brisk walking

-Yoga

-Simple strength and Stretch exercises like push-ups, planks, abdomen exercises that can be done at home

-Aerobics

-Cycling and Hiking

-Play a sport such as Badminton, Tennis, or any other sport

-Play with your kids

-Dancing

-Martial Arts

-and Running

Once you know the purpose to stay active you can automatically choose the right exercise for yourself. Consider all the factors and accordingly make a choice. Preferably if you can get a professional advice before starting on any exercise regime or speak to a GOQii Coach by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.

Consistency, Discipline & Dedication – Bharat Rao Shares 3 Secrets For Healthy Living!

Bharat Rao

Living a healthy life is all about maintaining balance. This includes exercise, nutrition, sleep and maintaining good mental & emotional health as well. If you’ve been hitting the gym or doing your daily walks or even eating the food you are supposed to without achieving results, there might be something that is amiss. That’s where having a coach who can guide and motivate you, really helps! To let you know how, here’s the journey of our Player Bharat Rao who went from being healthy to healthier, with help from his GOQii Coach.

Life Before GOQii

Bharat Rao works as a Senior Technical Lead in an IT Company. His work requires him to travel frequently. Till June 2019, his weight was 85kg but after a year, it shot up to 103kg. He did keep himself active despite his daily routine by playing badminton with a friend who eventually introduced him to GOQii.

Making The Shift

GOQii’s concept of Karma, personalized coaching and a tracker to monitor his step counts along with an integrated app really intrigued Bharat Rao. He decided that investing his time in GOQii would be worth his while.

After they got on call, his GOQii Coach included changes such as correcting his food habits, introducing more fruits and vegetables while reducing junk food, tea and coffee in take as well as putting a stop to late dinners. His workout included basic cardio and strength training at home. He was asked to avoid using his cellphone late at night in hopes to correct his sleep pattern.

Within the first month itself, Bharat Rao felt healthy! He was able to cope with the changes thanks to him being active before and was able to follow through with discipline. It got a bit challenging to incorporate these changes with his frequent traveling, but his GOQii Coach was able to help him adjust his schedule that included walking 6-7k steps a day, drinking cinnamon honey water in the morning before he began his journey. They were able to adjust eating habits too thanks to portion control. If regular walking didn’t cut it for him, he switched to GOQii Play in the mornings.

Staying Fit During Lockdown

With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown in 2020, he was quite worried about how he would keep up his routine. With some advice from his GOQii Coach, he began walking more indoors, meditating for 15 mins in the morning and 45 mins at night. He also began practicing yoga. He says, “Meditating in the morning and evening has actually helped me think positively, keeping all the negativity around the coronavirus and the economic situation at bay. I feel more grounded and peaceful even while sitting at home.”

At the end of 2020, his weight reduced to 85kg and he felt he was much healthier than before. He says that this journey was all about him repeating a routine over and over again, not giving up, staying disciplined and having good people push him further in a healthy way! He says that the 3 secrets to his transformation were consistency, discipline and dedication!

What Does Bharat Rao Think About GOQii?

Bharat Rao says that his coaches have constantly motivated him to be disciplined and consistent, sharing inputs from time to time about what he should eat, what exercises he should do and what he shouldn’t do. Most importantly, they have structured his routine for the days he travels. He is thankful to GOQii for helping him achieve his goal.

His Coach, Sudrita Roy Choudhury says, “Bharat was very committed to his health goal when he came on board. He was always very sincere from the beginning and never missed his updates. Along with walking, we have also included yoga and core exercises to his routine.

We have always discussed portion size which he has maintained and has got visible results! Deep breathing helped him reduce stress – one of the important parameters to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am convinced he will reach his goal soon. He is very active and promptly maintains two way communication via chats and calls which motivates me as well.”

What’s Healthier: Coconut, Wheat or Almond Flour?

coconut, wheat or almond flourIf you’ve been taking a closer look at your pantry, then we’re sure you’re reconsidering your flour choices. When we talk about flour, most of us think about “wheat flour” as it is a kitchen staple. It is the flour that we have been having since ages to make chapatis. But, there could be plenty of other reasons why you’re considering switching from wheat flour to coconut or almond flour. Maybe you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance or just want to switch to a healthier alternative. So, we have listed a few differences between these three flours to make it easier for you to choose between coconut, wheat or almond flour!

Nutritional Take On Coconut, Wheat & Almond Flour

Nutrition Coconut Almond Wheat
Calories 480 580 366
Carbs 59g 20g 76g
Protein 18g 21g 9.7g
Fat 15g 12g 1.5g
Fiber 38g 12g 12g

Coconut Flour

  • Health benefits of coconut flour: Coconut flour is gluten-free. It has a good moisture absorbing capacity and helps to give a good crumbly and dry texture to the baked goods. But, it has a higher content of phytic acid which leads to low nutrient absorption. Also, it has antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that support a healthy metabolism.
  • Cooking with coconut flour: Coconut flour is a versatile flour used in gluten-free and paleo baking. It can be used to prepare bread, muffins, cookies and cake. As it has a drying effect, it can be counteracted by using eggs while baking. The egg yolk provides moisture, whereas egg white offers structure to the baked goods.

Almond Flour

  • Health benefits of almond flour: Almond flour is incredibly healthy but contains more fat and calories. This makes this nutrient dense flour the best choice for a keto diet. It provides good vitamin E content which is a powerful antioxidant and magnesium that helps improve blood sugar levels.
  • Cooking with almond flour: Almond flour is commonly used in the preparation of pancakes, cakes, muffins and cookies. Other than baking, this flour combined with egg can be used to coat vegetables or meat and thereafter, bake or fry them. As it is free of gluten, it can be mixed with wheat flour to make pizza dough, pasta or bread.

Wheat Flour

  • Health benefits of wheat flour: Wheat flour is rich in fiber, minerals and protein. But it has gluten that makes it inappropriate for people who have gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Phytic acid in wheat flour is higher which reduces the nutrient absorption.
  • Cooking with wheat flour: Wheat flour can be used in making rotis, puris, ladoos and even quick breads, cookies and cakes.

Summing It Up

Although as Indians, wheat flour is functional in our regular diet, we can definitely opt for almond and coconut flour as well. All the above-mentioned flours are healthy in their own ways and can be used together to reap nutritional benefits. So the choice between coconut, wheat or almond flour is solely based on what you want to prepare and what you’re looking for.

If you’re still unable to come to a decision on whether you should opt for coconut, wheat or almond flour, you can speak to an expert for further guidance by subscribing for GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr. Nikita Jain Battles A Rare Condition & Wins With The Right Coaching

Nikita Jain

The pandemic wasn’t easy on a lot of us. The entire lockdown, coupled with social distancing and movement restriction impacted a lot of people in different ways. A unique problem that one of our players Nikita Jain suffered from was Vocal Cord Dysfunction – a condition which was latent in her till the lockdown. Nikita Jain says that due to her location, her house gets less sunlight and ventilation. The need to stay indoors always along with the paranoia of contracting an infection if she stepped outside, aggravated her stress, causing panic attacks and breathlessness which was eventually diagnosed as Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD).

When she consulted her local doctor, he assumed it was asthma and put her on a nebulizer. She did experience some relief, however, it was only for a short while. Later in August 2020, she consulted an Asthma and Allergy Specialist who diagnosed it as VCD and prescribed medication and some breathing exercises. Around the same time, she happened to see GOQii’s Brand Ambassador Akshay Kumar talk about the GOQii Smart Vital on YouTube. She then decided to buy a tracker and took a 3-month coaching subscription.

Start of the Journey

In their first conversation, her coach Mamta Joshi understood everything about her medical condition and lifestyle in general. Then she calmly explained the need to adopt healthy eating habits and minor modifications in her current diet. She introduced small tweaks in her meal pattern like reducing intake of carbs like roti and rice and switching them with protein sources. She started with fruits and salads which were not a part of her diet until then. She also started including soaked nuts and jeera water upon waking up.

She used to skip breakfast all the time, which her coach said was not advisable. Every habit was inculcated slowly one by one so that she was able to follow them without difficulty. Nikita Jain rarely indulged in any physical activity apart from normal household chores. Her GOQii Coach asked her to start with yoga and meditation for a few mins every day. She regularly watches live GOQii Play sessions and follows Ronak Gajjar for meditation, Sheetal Tiwari for yoga and Mukesh Morwall for nutrition tips.

She was also experiencing a lot of back pain and ankle pain which has magically disappeared after practicing some stretches and yoga every day. The coach also suggested an oil concoction for her ankle pain which helped her a lot.

Transformation and Leveling Up!

Nikita Jain says that the major transformation in her is in terms of her energy levels. There is no lethargy whatsoever and she is able to stay active throughout the day. She doesn’t feel any weakness or pain nowadays which helps her stay happy and peaceful.

She says, “Coach Mamta has brought back the smile on my face which was missing before and which was sorely missed by my family. More than me, it’s my Dad who is eager to see all my meal intake updated on the app for the coach to see and check if they are good enough.”

She enjoys Coach Arooshi Garg’s cooking sessions on GOQii Play and tried the recipes from the sessions at home. Being a housewife, she used to cook before too but now she cooks not just tasty but nutritious food as well. So it isn’t just her who benefited from the GOQii Coaching Subscription but her entire family on all levels.

What Does Coach Mamta Have To Say About Her Player Nikita Jain?

Nikita joined GOQii with a goal to get relief from a rare kind of health issue that developed during lockdown. She experienced some rare and abnormal complications such as paralysis of the left side of her body, stretched arms and limbs, intolerable body pain, breathlessness and excessive sensitivity to smell.

In our first discussion, I read her plight in her withered voice .She was intensely insecure about her future too. After some evaluation, I figured it was her disconnection with nature and to get her back to it might be the only possible solution. So we planned habits like getting some indoor plants, keeping doors/windows open during the day, soaking in sunlight on the building terrace, plus an oil massage for pain relief, breathing exercise/meditation for stress management and gradually the results started appearing. She started eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and her energy levels/stamina improved. From an almost bedridden state, she now exercises 1.5 hours a day.

I am glad she mustered the courage and will to not only tackle the problems head on but overcome them as well. Though it was an uphill battle, she won! Her stress levels have gone down, she clocks in 10,000 steps daily, has lost some weight , got in shape and the journey is still going on! The best thing about Nikita is that she never took any of my suggestions lightly and always adhered to them religiously. She honestly updated and acknowledged me about her condition and progress logs from time to time. And the result is a big victory in a short span of time.
