Top 10 Excuses To Avoid Being Fit and How To Overcome Them

Top 10 Excuses to Avoid Being Fit
Have you ever told yourself, “I’m going to stop this habit and start being healthy tomorrow” or after a night of binge-eating you promised to make healthier choices but never followed through? After forming unhealthy habits, we all understand the need to be active and healthy but most of us find it difficult to change our lifestyle. The reasons may vary from lack of motivation and time to older age and body aches.

Everyone has their own reasons intertwined with the realities of everyday life getting in the way of being more active. In today’s topic, I have highlighted the Top 10 Excuses People Make To Avoid Being Fit and How You Can Overcome Them!

1. I Don’t Have Enough Time
Not having enough time simply means that you need to make time. This can be as simple as squeezing in short walks throughout the day. Drive less, walk more. Select activities that require minimal time such as walking, jogging, or climbing stairs. Remember that every little step counts!

Look at it this way – If we can give 10 hours a day to earn wealth, we can easily give 30 minutes a day to be healthy.

2. I Think Exercise is Boring
Any routine when repeated day in and day out gets boring. It’s the same with exercise but it doesn’t necessarily have to be boring. Mixing up your routine can solve this issue. Try new workouts, exercise with a friend, join a local walking group or take up a team sport. Think back on physical activities you enjoyed as a child. Did you love roller skating, cycling, skipping, frisbee, tennis or jumping on a trampoline? Additionally, you can include a variety of exercises to avoid boredom. For example, you could try trekking and brisk walking instead of just walking on the treadmill.

3. Lack of Motivation
Try to watch one motivational video every day. Make physical activity a regular part of your daily or weekly schedule and write it on your calendar. Once you are done with your workout, share it on your preferred social network so your well-wishers can appreciate your efforts, follow your progress and eventually boost your motivation levels. Invite a friend to exercise with you on a regular basis, Join an exercise group or class.

If you still think you are not motivated, join the GOQii Family. Our coaches and experts will motivate you to be the best version of yourself. You can even seek inspiration on GOQii Play within the GOQii App or subscribe for personalized health coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

4. I’m Too Tired to Exercise After Work
No energy to exercise? But without exercise, you’ll have no energy at all. It’s a vicious cycle. Breaking the cycle with physical activity is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Exercising or being physically active doesn’t need to be difficult. You can wake up 30 mins early to exercise. A small run of 10-15 mins or cycling for 15-20 mins can go a long way in keeping you healthy. At work, you can even brisk walk or climb stairs during your lunch break.

5. I’m Too Lazy to Exercise
If the mere thought of a morning jog makes you feel tired, you need to change the way you think. Start by setting realistic expectations. If your mental bar is too high, you might give up without even trying. Whenever you notice that you’re having negative feelings about exercising, say “STOP!” in your mind then use positive statements such as, “Let’s do it” or “Stay focused”. Even a mantra in the form of a single word like “Focus” or “Go” can be helpful. Start with a walk around the block. Don’t give up if you feel worn out. Take another walk around the block tomorrow. Keep it up, and eventually, you’ll no longer feel worn out.

Work with your nature, not against it. Plan physical activity for times of the day when you tend to feel more energetic — or at least not quite so lazy. Go for a walk in the morning, not as a physical activity but to enjoy nature. Start spending 1% of your day for exercise and gradually it will increase.

6. Fear of Injury
If you’re nervous about injuries, there’s literally no need to worry. Start with a simple walking program followed by a warm up and a cool down to prevent injury. As you become more confident in your abilities, add new activities to your routine. Choose activities involving minimum risk. You can also learn how to exercise appropriately considering your age, fitness level, skill level, and health status.

7. I’ve Tried Earlier and Failed
Success never comes immediately. Based on certain factors, your progress might be fast or slow. Failure is just another step to success. Currently, if you are not involved in any exercise, start with the basics and gradually increase your intensity. Begin with small workouts and build up to more intense workouts when your body is ready. Set some realistic goals and remember why you’re exercising. Once you achieve your goals, reward yourself. It will keep you motivated. Don’t give up and keep moving forward. You’ll find success eventually.

8. ‘It’s too Hot’, It’s too Cold’, ‘It’s Raining’
There’s always something you can do, regardless of the weather. Don’t try to use seasons as your obstacles, rather, make them your opportunity. Use a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to choose from so that the weather can’t interfere with your exercise routine. With regards to the indoor activities, you can choose different exercises or routines such as the 7 Min Exercise, Tabata, 9 Min Exercise format, Ab format etc. If you are planning outdoor activities, try football, kabaddi, cycling, running, jogging or trekking. During monsoons, if you’re stuck in the market – go to a shopping mall and window shop. Choose weather-specific activities such as skiing or snow-play in winter or swimming in summer.

9. I Can’t Afford Health Club Fees
You don’t really need a club membership to be fit. Nature has already provided all the resources you need to get active. If required, you can use very simple, basic and effective props, like a Resistance Band, Bosu Ball, Yoga Mat, Kettlebell, Suspension Trainer, Swiss Ball, etc. Among all of the above – my favourite workout is with your own body weight. Here are some exercises you can incorporate in your routine: Push Ups, Jumping Jacks, Squats, Lunges, Plank, Mountain Climbers, Burpees, Pull Ups, Calf Raises, Sit-ups, and Jogging. Once you are used to it – try some variations and increase the intensity.

10. Too Much Traveling
Most people travel a lot and they always have an excuse that you are not getting enough time to workout. So for them, I have already written a separate blog. Please check: Stay Fit While Traveling.

One small drop can create a ripple in the water. Why do you think that one small workout isn’t going to make a difference? If you decide to achieve your fitness goal, no one can stop you from getting there. The first step is always the hardest but once you take it, there’s no stopping!

Can you think of better excuses? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll give you ways to beat them!

‘I Am And I Will’: World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day

‘Cancer’ is considered a stigma word. One forgets that Cancer is not contagious however, the human mindset for eons has believed that cancer spreads and hence, one with cancer is looked at differently or is ostracized. Believe me, Cancer is not the end of the road. There is hope for people with cancer, provided both, the patient as well as the people around the patient are willing to help each other.

This is precisely what the World Cancer Day theme ‘I Am And I Will’ addresses. The campaign which began in 2019 is an empowering call-to-action that urges personal commitment and represents the power of individual action taken now to impact the future. The campaign is built to resonate, inspire change and mobilize action long after the day has passed.

There are various ways to reduce the risk of cancer. Those with cancer need not worry as there is always hope at the end of the tunnel. Experts say that one of the best ways to reduce the risk of Cancer is by adopting a healthy lifestyle. It is said that you can reduce the risk of many common cancers such as bowel, breast, uterine, ovarian, esophagus, kidney and liver by maintaining healthy weight, eating right and making physical activity a part of your daily routine.

‘I Am And I Will’ theme indicates that as an individual or as an organization, get involved in any way you can. Because together, we can create change. What you can do is:

  • Get Personal: Create your own custom social media post with your own personal message of the commitment and share it with the world.
  • Light up the World: As an organisation or even at an Individual level, you can make a statement by lighting up a significant landmark, monument or building to be illuminated on World Cancer Day in the colours of orange and blue in your city.
  • Spread the word: By writing a blog or an article in a newspaper or a video message.
  • Join the action: Join by showing up at an event near you and volunteer.
  • Create your own Event: Inspire others by hosting your own World Cancer Day event. From flash mobs, free screenings, record breaking attempts, conferences, fundraisers to fun runs.
  • One and all can get Involved: Whoever you are- a cancer survivor, co-worker, a carer, a friend, a leader, a health worker, a teacher or a student- you have the power to take action for a cancer free world.

We all can do our bit. I remember there is an organization in Mumbai called Ugam, a voluntary support group formed by Childhood Cancer survivors. UGAM means “To Rise” underscoring their determination to rise above all obstacles in life & be VICTORS. UGAM, based in Mumbai is the youngest unit of the oldest & most prominent NGO, The Indian Cancer Society (ICS) under its survivorship programme.

Ugam’s vision is to ensure that every childhood cancer survivor finds his/ her way to celebrate life after winning the battle with cancer. Ugam helps in self-empowerment of the survivors. It helps in fulfilling their dreams that were put on hold while they were battling this tormenting disease and the hardships of the treatment. Helping in overcoming social fears and hindrances, overcoming their physical and mental disabilities and moving ahead despite them, as well as providing educational and career related assistance and guidance.

Ugam provides a platform for them to talk about their experience and problems and help in building their confidence and self-esteem. Ugam tries and gives them a reason to lead a social and personal life in the future.

From Being Healthy to Being Healthier! Samridhi Kapoor User Journey

Samridhi KapoorHave you always been health conscious? Do you measure each calorie and hit the gym regularly? In spite of your efforts, have you missed out on minute changes in your lifestyle that could have a big impact on your health? While, answers to all the above queries can be found in blogs and books, a personal touch of a coach can go a long way in keeping you on track with your goals.

Samridhi Kapoor, a 37 year old working professional from Gurgaon, has always been health conscious. In fact, conscious eating habits run in her family. Her weight has been more or less constant in the last decade and she even worked out regularly. However, Samridhi had a habit of indulging in unhealthy snacks and aerated drinks and was unable to shirk off that habit. That’s when GOQii helped her shed some old habits, acquire some new ones and get healthier!

Samridhi Kapoor was looking for a fitness tracker to help her track step counts, calories, etc. A colleague from her workplace referred GOQii. While other trackers only tracked steps, calories and distance, GOQii added a more human approach with personalized coaching. She was intrigued by the idea of having a coach who would talk to her everyday and motivate her.

How Did GOQii Help Samridhi Kapoor?

A few years back, she was eating unhealthy due to stressful conditions and was underweight. She gained her weight back around the time GOQii came into her life. Her goal was toning her body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Her assigned coach started off with minute changes. Samridhi would eat biscuits in the evening which were replaced with healthy snacks. She would enjoy her milk with Bournvita but was advised against it as Bournvita is only sugar and was suggested a healthier alternative.

Samridhi wasn’t too fond of fruits but her coach guided her through the benefits of fruits as they boost immunity and have anti-oxidant properties. She is now regular with fruits. In terms of physical fitness, Samridhi visited the gym regularly. If short on time due to a late shift, she would walk before going to bed. She began practicing yoga as suggested by her coach and found it beneficial. Her coach also shared links to exercises she could try.

In the past 6 months, Samridhi experienced a lot of stress and issues with sleep. Her coach advised meditation which she wasn’t able to continue due to a hectic schedule. For her sleep issues, she was given remedies such as maintaining sleep routine, consuming turmeric milk and chamomile tea. The remedies were useful and she is sleeping better now.

When asked about GOQii, she said:

“The best thing about GOQii is that it has kept pace with the changes that are happening in the market right now. While there are so many other players and brands in the market but GOQii has been able to incorporate so many things that sets it a class apart. The customizations and different types of trackers offered for different type of people for various niche is really good. It has an edge over other players. All the other fitness trackers are the same and have nothing new coming up in terms of features, providing only the basic, standard features. As for GOQii Play, the kind of videos they come up with encompass everything. GOQii has videos for depression, yoga, zumba. It has different types of videos for everything. Whatever you like, you can choose. The customizations that GOQii offers aren’t found in any other device.”

Samridhi has been a GOQii Player for 4 years and is also a GOQii Champion who leads the Active Sunday Sessions in Gurgaon. We look forward to assisting Samridhi in being the force for a healthy and active lifestyle!

Good Health & Good Karma! How Rajneesh Sharma won the India Steps Challenge!

india steps challenge winnerWhat if you had a chance to win Rs. 5 lakh? How far would you go? What if the odds weren’t completely in your favor? Would you still keep going? When the GOQii India Steps Challenge presented our players with an opportunity to earn rewards for walking, many individuals stepped up to the challenge. But, there were only a few that rose to the top! One of those challengers was Rajneesh Sharma.

Before the GOQii India Steps Challenge

Hailing from a small town in the Pathankot District of Punjab, Rajneesh Sharma works for Ranjit Sagar Dam. His job is sedentary and involves a lot of desk time. He is married with two children.

Apart from his job, he is also associated with an NGO by the name of Shiv Bhole Langar Samiti that engages in providing food and other facilities to the Manimahesh Pilgrims. Manimahesh is situated at an altitude of 12,956 ft and is difficult even for seasoned trekkers. Due to his eagerness to serve people through this NGO, Rajneesh began taking an interest in fitness and physical activities.

Before joining GOQii, he was moderately active, walking sometimes. However, there was no consistency as his job didn’t leave him with much time to walk or indulge in any activity. He considered his diet to be normal as well.

Becoming the Force

In December 2018, his elder brother motivated him to join GOQii and work towards his health and fitness. As he came on to the platform, the first run that he actively participated in was the GOQii Resolution Run 2019.

Once he had successfully completed the run in January, he got introduced to the GOQii India Steps Challenge in February. When he heard of the Rs. 5 lakh cash reward, he had made up his mind to win it and donate the money to his NGO. Rajneesh Sharma began walking 2 hours in the morning, 2 hours in the evening and even in between as and when time permitted. Thus, he was active for almost 5-6 hours a day during the challenge and was clocking in an average of 39,657 steps daily.

To keep up his stamina, he turned to balance his meals more. As a vegetarian, he had to completely rely on plant protein. He began eating soaked almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and at times sprouts as well before his workout. After his workout, he drank a glass of milk. He mostly ate home-cooked meals for lunch and dinner.

During the course of participating in the challenge, he experienced knee pain. He tackled this issue by doing knee-strengthening exercises and his condition improved.

To walk his way towards the grand prize, Rajneesh sacrificed time with his family for a period of 100 days. He could barely afford any time at all for his wife and children as his entire routine revolved only around walking and work. Although, he had their support. He even found support in 4 of his friends who joined him in his journey and won prizes as well.

Embracing the Change

By the time the challenge had ended, Rajneesh Sharma noticed that he had lost 4-5kg. His stamina improved tremendously. Before, he used to feel breathless, but now, he can easily walk for hours together without any effort. He says that walking has become an obsession now.

He doesn’t miss his walks under any circumstances. Rajneesh says that the India Steps Challenge has made him more passionate about staying fit and being healthy. His four friends have continued to join him for walks even after the Challenge. They do their best to motivate each other.

Apart from physical fitness, he has also noticed changes in his mental and emotional wellness. He feels really positive throughout the day. There isn’t an ounce of tiredness or stress that chain him down. He has more energy than before which keeps him cheerful and happy.

Hard work Pays Off! Winning India Steps Challenge

After putting in so much hard work and dedication, Rajneesh Sharma, his family and friends were all looking forward to see if he had won the challenge. When the grand prize was announced, he got to know that someone else had claimed the first prize.

Everyone who supported Rajneesh and knew his struggles were extremely disappointed. In the spirit of fairness, when an audit was performed, Rajneesh was declared the true winner of the India Steps Challenge. He was happy that his ardent efforts had paid off.

He said, “I am very happy to have won this challenge as I have decided to give this money to an NGO – ‘Shiv Bhole Langar Samiti’ with whom I volunteer. This NGO feeds people in Himachal Pradesh’s Manimahesh pilgrims. I participated and started walking to keep myself fit only to be able to climb up 13 km to feed people as part of the NGO work. Then my friends joined me and that kept me motivated.”

What began as a challenge, became an inspiring story of hard work, dedication and good karma. An initial quest for a reward gave Rajneesh so much more than just Rs. 5 lakh. He was able to discover true wealth in the form of fitness and good health.

We wish him the best in his journey towards being fitter and healthier!
