Take The Best Route Forward! Lakshmi Ajitha Gets Healthier With GOQii

Lakshmi AjithaBeing healthy is a consistent effort. No amount of crash dieting or overworking yourself at the gym for a few months can resolve health issues which have piled up over months and years. Many people find it difficult to follow a healthy routine. Sometimes, all you need is a little encouragement and the right guidance to get you started – something out player Lakshmi Ajitha realized through her association with GOQii! 

Life Before GOQii  

Lakshmi Ajitha is a 33 year old working professional from Bengaluru. She said that she’s always been on the heavier side since puberty. Post marriage, her weight only increased due to hormonal and lifestyle changes. Since the lockdown in March 2020, she only gained another 5-7kg. When someone would comment on her weight, she would turn to crash diets and quit them with zero consistency. Junk food, indulgence in sweets with no restrictions, eating out and lack of physical activities only contributed to her weight gain and slowly, all sorts of health issues such as thyroid and PCOS began creeping up on her. 

In August 2020, a fitness challenge was rolled out in her company, and all who registered, received a GOQii tracker with 3 month subscription. Being someone who always lacked the inclination to do any kind of activity, she thought this might finally motivate her. So, she registered for the challenge and then there was no looking back. 

Changing Habits To Improve Lifestyle 

Lakshmi says though she received the tracker and had a coach assigned, she never took it seriously for at least a month. Then in October, when she was away on a 2 week vacation, there were numerous messages on her app from her Coach, expressing concern over her inactivity and not interacting with her. She felt there was someone who was really worried about her health and wished to help her.  

She then had a call with her GOQii Coach Priyanka Mangla, who understood everything about her lifestyle, diet pattern and daily routine. She then slowly introduced small changes like a basic walk everyday to complete 5k steps, increasing water intake and cutting down on her tea intake from 5 cups a day to just 2 cups in a week. These changes also included avoiding maida, all kinds of processed food, reducing rice intake while increasing fruit and vegetable intake. Most importantly, her Coach taught her how to control sweet cravings which was a major challenge. 

Lakshmi Ajitha says her coach never forced anything, always gave alternatives and gently guided her to the right foods. She always gave a reasoning as to why she should or shouldn’t do something. The Coach was also strict with her logging food and activity everyday. 

Lakshmi says the best thing she liked about her Coach was that she appreciated even the smallest of her achievements, understood her body and suggested suitable options. 

On the physical activity front, the third month saw her completing 10k steps everyday and thereafter, she was slowly introduced to basic bodyweight exercises. Sometime during December, she experienced knee pain which turned out to be OsteoArthritis. Her coach shared exercises which would not strain her knees and now the pain is very mild and only aggravates if she does any jumping activity. 

Results After 6 Months Of Making a Lifestyle Change 

Her weight reduced by 14kg over the last 6 months. In October and November, where her monthly cycles used to be completely unpredictable, now they have regularised and that too without any medication. Her TSH which used to hover between 7 and 12 until October last year, has come down to 1.4 when she last checked in February. 

Lakshmi says what she liked about GOQii is that they focus on giving the best routes for the user rather than constantly nagging them about different plans and subscription renewals. Sleep Series: The Chemistry of Sleep

sleep series: chemistry of sleepDifficult to believe? Yes it is true. The perfect sleep is the result of a complex reaction from 2 main chemicals. Adenosine is a neurochemical which accumulates during “wake” and drains during “sleep”. Imagine a specially made hourglass, but one which builds up for approx. 16 hours of our wake cycle and drains within 8 hours of our sleep cycle. The receptors of Adenosine inform the brain that “stock levels are up” and it is time to relax and sleep. As sleep kicks in, stock levels of Adenosine goes down and receptors send a “wake up” signal to the brain.

Adenosine is the primary inducer of sleep-wake cycle. It reduces neural activity and sets you to start sleep. Interestingly, Caffeine blocks the Adenosine receptors and creates the opposite effect.  There we go – as to why we feel a bit fresh and brisk after a cup of coffee – it is an illusion we create by confusing the brain! The body’s excretion system works hard to flush Caffeine. It takes 5-6 hours to flush out just 50% of this possessive chemical.

I’ve mentioned Adenosine over Melatonin as the primary sleep chemical because I wanted to impress upon the impact of Caffeine. We take Caffeine in many forms – Coffee, Cola, energy drinks, etc. Caffeine also impacts the Dopamine and Serotonin chemical reaction, thereby causing a significant disruption of the normal neural activity. 

Do let Adenosine do its job naturally, you will sleep on time and naturally! Caffeine interferes with several hormonal/neurochemical reactions related to sleep. Do not consume Caffeine beyond lunchtime and in any case, beyond 4pm. 

The Magical Darkness Hormone – Melatonin

Melatonin is the second chemical responsible for enabling “onset” of sleep. It detoxifies the body of free radicals and other toxins. It starts secretion as soon as darkness sets in and it peaks by midnight. The synthesis of melatonin occurs through a multistep complex chemical process:

  • It all starts with food – food contains an amino acid called tryptophan. Foods like Milk, oats, nuts contain more tryptophan. 
  • Tryptophan is absorbed from the bloodstream to the pineal gland in the brain.
  • First, tryptophan is converted to another amino acid and then to a brain chemical called Serotonin. 2 Enzymes are involved here!
  • Serotonin’s conversion to melatonin involves two more enzymes.
  • All chemicals discussed here follow complex routines and they are part of a chain which is amazingly responsible for the onset of sleep. On top of it all, there is a closely coordinated play of the “Brain-Gut complex” to get this right!

How Can You Aid This Natural Process For Good Sleep? 

DON’T intervene in the natural process! Supplements can’t get you anywhere near the good quality sleep offered by this natural process.  

  • Beware of Caffeine! – Stop post lunch consumption
  • Consume foods high in tryptophan – consult your GOQii coach
  • Gut (Serotonin storage) has its role in sleep, so keep it clean and healthy
  • Get used to darkness after dinner to catalyze natural Melatonin 

Adenosine has other functions such as certain cardiac functions as well. This article does not deal with them. An enzyme is a biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction and an amino acid is an organic acid used to make proteins usually obtained from food. OTC Melatonin – a small dose is usually fine to get over jet lag.

Getting A Push To A Healthier Lifestyle – Rohit Khatri User Journey

Finding GOQii To Make A Change 

Rohit Khatri is a 32 year old Delhi-based businessman who was introduced to GOQii through the ABBOTT Gutfit program in 2016. His doctor had asked him to register for a 3 month subscription with GOQii to adopt lifestyle modifications to manage his GERD issue as well as his weight, which at that time was 132kg. The doctor said that the only way he could get relief from GERD and other associated issues is when he reduces his weight.  

“Most times, you know what the problem is but you can’t seem to do anything about it. You just give up and let life take its course,” says Rohit. He knew his weight had increased incredibly over the years and he just seemed to lack the will to do anything about it. He commends both his coaches, his previous coach, Swati and current coach Sakhi Agarwal, for giving him the confidence and the push to tackle his weight issue. 

He points out that untimely eating, overeating and having absolutely no control over his junk habits were the sole cause behind his enormous weight gain. 

Inculcating New Healthy Habits 

The first and foremost thing that his coach assured him was that he doesn’t have to go through any drastic changes to his routine. She said they will adopt a gradual yet consistent method to losing weight and resolving his gastric issues. He was asked to make the following changes to his routine: 

  • Drink jeera water on an empty stomach in the morning, followed by a fruit 
  • Khichdi or Dalia for breakfast 
  • For lunch, he was asked to eat roti, sabzi or dal-chawal, though the portion size was reduced 
  • Avoid calorie-dense foods
  • Stay off junk food and sweets 
  • Dinner consisted of more salads followed by home-cooked meals  
  • Brisk walk for 45 mins every day (his duration has increased to 1.5 hours now) 
  • He slowly included jogging, cycling or brisk walking or a combination of all to avoid boredom 
  • During lockdown, he started watching GOQii Play and worked out with whichever coach was online during his exercise time 

The Right Efforts Lead To Healthy Rewards 

As a result of following his new healthy habits daily, Rohit Khatri witnessed the following changes in his life: “

  • Completely off GERD medication 
  • Weight has reduced from 132kg to 103kg 
  • He feels more energetic and positive about himself 

He says that shopping for clothes earlier used to be a nightmare as he didn’t have many options for his plus size but now he doesn’t have to struggle as much. He is pleased with the compliments he gets from people for his weight loss and that even after 4 years, the weight he lost hasn’t come back. It makes him happy that he achieved his goal. 

What Does Rohit Khatri Have To Say About GOQii? 

He is grateful to both his coaches and says he owes it all to them. If not for them, he wouldn’t have gotten the push to focus on his health. They made it seem too easy to him, corrected him whenever he went wrong, motivated, and encouraged him at every step.

What Does Coach Sakhi Agarwal Have To Say About His Progress? 

Rohit Khatri was transferred to me on June 5, 2020. He was an Abbott Player and had a history of GERD. At the time, his weight was 120kg in July, his waist was 40 inches and his sleep time was disturbed i.e. 2am to 11am. I suggested 3 habits as per his goals: 

  1. Morning detox water to speed his metabolism 
  2. Improve sleep timings and change it to 11pm to 6am 
  3. Start taking an average of 3k steps a day 

Later, I introduced other habits like replacing biscuits with roasted snacks or fruits and eating meals on time.

Now, he has increased his step count to 16-20k a day. He lost 11kg and 5 inches in 5 months. His current weight is 109kg and waist size is 35 inches. He is currently working hard to reduce his weight further and getting healthier. He is happy with his progress and has renewed his subscription for 1 year.

7 Ayurvedic Remedies to Boost Immunity

ayurvedic remediesThe importance of healthy immune function is something we tend to neglect until it’s flu season or we are faced with a pandemic. With the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, you’re probably reaching for vitamin C capsules, but there’s a lot more you can do to strengthen immunity. Vitamin C supplementation is not the most effective immune-boosting strategy, as dietary intake of nutrients is more effective than supplementation. Moreover, there are other nutrients and natural therapeutic ingredients, diet, and lifestyle practices that are important for healthy immune function. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of such practices at all times because of its focus on disease prevention. It makes sense for us to revisit some of the best Ayurvedic remedies for immunity at this time.

7 Ayurvedic Remedies to Boost Immunity

 

  • Haridra: The best remedies are always the simplest ones and it doesn’t get simpler than this. Haridra, haldi, or turmeric is the most easily available ingredient that we use in every household. Just start adding it to more of your foods and make it a point to drink warm Haldi doodh or golden milk each morning and before bedtime. Studies show that curcumin, the primary organic compound in haridra, has a strong immunomodulatory effect. It enhances antibody responses, which are critical for fighting off pathogens to either prevent or overcome infections.
  • Tulsi: Tulsi is ascribed with divine or spiritual significance in Indian culture and is also revered for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda. You will often find it as an ingredient in herbal Ayurvedic cough syrups and tonics, but it’s not just helpful for relieving colds and coughs. Some research shows that tulsi extracts exhibit immunomodulatory effects, raising lymphocyte levels and enhancing the immune response. This can significantly improve disease-fighting ability and reduce recovery times. Tulsi can be consumed in any form – steeped in water for herbal tea, or by combining the crushed leaves, flowers, and stem with honey and ghee. You can also use tulsi powder or supplements if you can’t get your hands on fresh tulsi.
  • Sunth: Sunth, which is the dried form of ginger, is another effective Ayurvedic remedy for immune function. You can also use fresh ginger if you like as the immune-boosting effects are not very different. Ginger’s potent medicinal properties are attributed to gingerols, which have been found to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is protective of lung function, reducing irritation and spasms, making you less vulnerable to respiratory infections. Ginger is also known to possess antimicrobial properties that can help your immune system fight infections. To get these benefits, you can chew on raw ginger slices, drink fresh ginger juice, and add ginger to your tea or meals.
  • Jyeshtimadhu: Known in much of the western world as licorice, Jyesthimadhu is often used in Ayurvedic medicine and remedies to treat respiratory and gastrointestinal ailments. Because of its powerful therapeutic properties, the herb is classified as a rasayana in Ayurveda – the category of rejuvenative herbs. These therapeutic actions are linked to the specific polysaccharides in Jyesthimadhu. Studies suggest that the herb can significantly enhance immune function and antioxidant enzyme activity, providing stronger immune protection against viral and bacterial infections. To consume the herb, you can chew on the twigs known as mulethi sticks or add the herbal powder to ginger tea or juice.
  • Eucalyptus Oil: Known as Nilgiri Taila in Ayurveda, eucalyptus oil is notable for its therapeutic properties, which have been well studied for decades. These benefits are linked to the high content of flavonoids and tannins in eucalyptus. The herbal oil has proven antimicrobial effects that can help fight a variety of infections. A study that appeared in BMC Immunology also indicated that eucalyptus oil could have an immune stimulatory effect, enhancing phagocytic response to better protect against pathogens like viruses and bacteria. You can use eucalyptus oil in your mouth wash or throat gargle or add a few drops to a bowl of steaming water for inhalation.
  • Follow the Dinacharya: Dinacharya or daily routine is one of the fundamental concepts in Ayurveda. It outlines the ideal daily routine, with time scheduled for waking up, exercise, meditation, meals, sleep, and so on. This routine was formulated over thousands of years, based on, and meant to be in harmony with the natural ebb and flow of nature. Although this practice has largely been forgotten and ignored in recent decades, we are now learning about its importance through new scientific investigations of the circadian rhythm. It is clear now that such a routine is vital for the health of the circadian system, which in turn has a huge impact on immune function. 
  • Practice Pranayamas: While exercise in itself is important for healthy immunity and cardiorespiratory function, Pranaymas can be particularly helpful. An integral feature of yoga, these breathing exercises may seem pointless as they do not require any physical activity unlike asanas. However, they are known to strengthen lung function and can significantly lower the risk of respiratory disease, including airborne infections. Some pranayama exercises like kapalabhati, omkara, and brahmari are in fact so effective, that their practice is even recommended for patients who suffer from chronic respiratory conditions like asthma.

 

The above Ayurvedic remedies can give you added immune support during such times of crisis. However, they are not meant as a substitute for healthy living. Try to adopt diet and lifestyle practices on a long term basis for sustainable health and wellbeing so that you are better prepared for the next pandemic, as coronavirus is not the last, but just the latest pandemic to hit us.
