9 Tips For Self-Motivation

9 Tips for Self-MotivationAs part of my regular conversation, I asked one of my players about exercise.

“I don’t feel like it!” He replied swiftly.

Seeing his lack of motivation, I nudged him a little gently to give it a try. He sulkily replied with an “Okay!”

The same episode unfolded the next day with him being unenthusiastic about exercising. It didn’t matter how hard I tried to motivate him day after day. After a while, I realised that the player completely lacked intrinsic or self-motivation i.e the motivation that comes from within.

Self-Motivation emanates from one’s own sheer willingness to achieve a goal that has been set for oneself. Many times, we promise ourselves that from next week or next month we will start exercising, leave sugar or work towards a healthier lifestyle, but how many times do we sincerely stick to these goals? Of course, the desire to change our lifestyle for our own good has to be self-motivated, but seldom are we able to maintain the interest levels to achieve a goal.

Self-Motivation is quite important when it comes to being fit. We start well by following a routine of waking up early and going for walk, a run or to the gym. The first few days of the week go by as per routine but suddenly there is a radical dip in the levels of our motivation. In most cases, the loss of motivation occurs when we step on a weighing scale and see no change. Another reason could be negative, self-criticising thought patterns where we compare ourselves to skinny models  or chiselled athletes, thinking we’ll never be like them, instantly hammering our motivation into a million pieces.

If you’ve been seeking self-motivation and aren’t able to find it, here are 9 surefire ways to stay motivated!

1. Do It Only If You Want To
If you are exercising for the sake of it, let’s embrace the truth, it won’t work. Motivation levels will drop easily when you do something you don’t want to. To keep going and feel motivated from within, you need to enjoy your workout. To stay fit, experiment and find out what activity you like the most.

2. Stop Criticising Yourself
If you start comparing yourself with someone you think is perfect, then your motivation will bite the dust. Realise that the person next to you who is in perfectly good shape took the time and effort to look like that. Instead of dwelling in self-degrading thoughts and criticising yourself, put in a fair effort.

3. Picture Yourself a Few Years From Now
Picture a healthier you, a slimmer or better-looking you. How would you like to see yourself a year from today? This thought itself can motivate you from within.

4. Get Over Your Laziness
“Not now”, “Maybe tomorrow”, “I will start from Monday”, “Maybe next month”… Do you recognise these statements? They are evident signs of procrastination and laziness. Very soon, the “not now” becomes “never” and we hardly try to achieve any pending health goals we may have. What should we do? Get over it and start moving! Try playing some energetic music around you, change your lazy-looking, comfort-filled environment and get yourself going.

5. Focus on the Goal
This is the most important thing you need to do. Focus on your goals, whether it is to achieve balance in your lifestyle, eat healthy or lose your weight, start focusing on your goal. More than often, we divert from our original goals and start overthinking. For instance, if your goal is to lose weight, stop thinking about the clothes that you are not fitting in right now, or what will happen if you do and do not lose weight. Just tame your mind and focus on your ultimate goal!

6. Set Small Targets and Give Yourself a Reward
Reward plays a very important role in self-motivation. Start with small goals, or what we like to call S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely) goals and reward yourself every time you achieve one of them. For example, if your ultimate goal is to lose 25kg, have a “S.M.A.R.T” goal to lose 4 to 5 kg per month and when you manage to achieve it successfully, reward yourself with something you like. Be it new clothes or even a new mobile phone.

7. Set Penalties
If Rewards work then penalties work as well. By penalties, I don’t actually mean punishing yourself to the extent of starvation when you eat junk food or excessively working out every time you skip exercise. Instead, do it in a positive way. Like every time you miss exercise or eat something unhealthy, put a certain amount of money in a penalty box, which will ultimately go to your friend/ spouse/ kids or colleagues. That will motivate you enough to not skip exercise the next time.

8. Pen It Down
If you write your goals and dreams on a regular basis, you are 42% more likely to achieve those goals, says a study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews – a psychology professor at the Dominican University of California. Try maintaining a journal and write your goals as well as achievements down on a daily basis.

9. Do It For the Selfies!
It may sound funny but if you like to take pictures and post them on social media, you might actually likes this idea. Going for a workout? Take a selfie! Bought yourself new gym clothes? Take a selfie! Lost two inches? Take a selfie! Apart from the shares and likes, you will also be able to map your progress through pictures. So give it a try. It definitely worked for me!

In closing, remember that being self-motivated takes a lot of willpower. You need to feel good about yourself as well as better yourself on a daily basis. No amount of external motivation is enough if you don’t have the inclination to accomplish your own goals.

We hope these motivational tips will ignite the self-motivated fire within you. If you found these strategies valuable and have your own motivational techniques to share, please do so in the comments section below.

Remember, your path to self-motivation and a healthier you starts with the first step.

Strengthening Exercises You Need to Include in Your Routine

strengthening exercisesStrengthening exercises, as the name suggests, often bring to mind big muscles and heavy weights, but that’s far from the complete picture. Strengthening exercises have different aspects depending on the goal, and they are beneficial for people of all fitness levels.

These exercises involve complex movements that work on major muscle groups as well as secondary muscles. Any activity that makes the muscles work harder than usual improves muscle strength, maintains bone density, and enhances overall endurance. In addition, they also improve balance, reduce joint pain, and support weight management.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need expensive equipment or a gym membership to incorporate strength training into your routine. A strong body allows you to perform daily activities efficiently and minimises the risk of injuries. Let’s explore some simple yet effective exercises you can do anywhere!

Few Exercises You Can Practice

If you haven’t had time for the gym or a structured workout today, try these simple yet effective strengthening exercises:

  1. Squats – A great way to improve quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, abdominals, and calves.
  2. Lunges & Reverse Lunges – Work primarily on quadriceps, gluteus maximus, knee joints, and core muscles.
  3. Push-ups – Target chest muscles, shoulders (deltoids), triceps, and abdominals.
  4. Triceps Dips & Pull-ups – Engage supportive upper body muscles.
  5. Planks, Crunches, Reverse Crunches, Leg Raises, and Russian Twists – Strengthen core muscles, obliques, abdominals, spinal erectors, and scapular stabilisers.
  6. Mountain Climbers & Burpees – Work the upper and lower body together, engaging core muscles.
  7. Balancing Workouts – Exercises like standing on a single leg, balancing a stick on your fingers, and walking on a single line help improve stability and prevent injuries.
  8. Flexibility Workouts – Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), Front Bending Pigeon Pose, Glute Stretch, and Warrior Pose enhance flexibility, prevent injuries, and improve posture.

Benefits of Strengthening Exercises

  • Makes you stronger – Helps perform daily tasks more efficiently, especially as you age.
  • Protects bone health & muscle mass – Prevents loss of lean muscle mass after 30.
  • Helps with weight management – Increases resting metabolism, even on non-workout days.
  • Improves body mechanics – Enhances balance, coordination, and posture.
  • Supports lifestyle disease management – Aids in managing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and arthritis.
  • Boosts energy & mood – Releases endorphins, reducing stress and promoting mental well-being.

Incorporating strengthening exercises into your daily routine improves overall health, reduces injury risks, and enhances longevity. Whether you are working out at home or at the gym, these exercises will help you build strength and resilience.

The Easiest & Healthiest Way to Get Active!

World Bicycle DayEver wondered why we do what we do? Why we get up at dawn on any given day, including Sundays? The reason is simple for many of us: it’s either for running or cycling. It’s like a ritual and a moment for ourselves. If you’re into running or cycling, you’ll connect well with what I’m saying. It’s an addiction—and a good one to have!

I have always been interested in history and like to delve deep into understanding how a particular concept evolved. As I was researching a bit on cycling, I came across the fact that the concept of cycling was invented by Baron Karl von Drais, a prolific German inventor way back in the year 1817. Interestingly, what he invented was not exactly the bicycle which we know and use. He invented the walking machine that helped him walk in the royal gardens faster. This device had wheels but didn’t have any gears, chains, and pedals. Also, it moved ahead by pushing his feet against the ground. With an improvement in this technology, this crude device was eventually transformed into the modern-day bicycle.

World Bicycle Day

Source: Wikipedia

Riding a bicycle is a good aerobic and cardio activity. If cycling is done on a regular basis, it can deliver lots of health benefits.

This simple form of physical exercise helps in bettering your physical and mental health. It is a low impact form of exercise that helps all ages.

Some Benefits of Riding a Bicycle

  • Improves cardio health by strengthening heart muscles
  • Lowers resting pulse rate
  • Reduces blood fat levels
  • Tones muscles and increases flexibility
  • Uses both upper body muscles such as chest, shoulders, arms, abs and the back as well as leg muscles such as quadriceps (front thighs), hamstrings (rear thighs), glutes, calf muscles and your hip
  • Better blood circulation due to flexibility brings about good joint mobility

Having talked of some of the basic health benefits a simple cycling activity can offer, it also acts as a cheap mode of transport and is environmentally friendly.

In today’s time where we are fraught with terrible environment damages and increased carbon footprint due to many vehicles on the roads, cycling is one way we personally can resort to, to be environmentally conscious. It is reported that Cycling 10 km every day can prevent the emission of at least 1.3 tonnes of greenhouses gases annually.

For beginners who want to take up cycling for regular fitness, start slow as we always say for every other athletic sports such as running. On you first day of cycling, you should not ride for more than 20 minutes. Slowly and steadily get used to the cycle as well as the body movements and then increase the intensity as you go along.

Few Things to Follow When You Take Up Cycling

  • Safety Measures: Safety is the first and foremost thing to adhere to while taking up cycling either for health, as a regular sport or as a mode of transport. Never ride a cycle in the outdoor without a proper cycling helmet. Helmet prevents a head injury in case of an accident.
  • Proper Clothing: It is important to wear well-fitting clothes. Loose clothes may get stuck during cycling and cause serious problems. Especially if you are riding in the outdoors
  • Be Hydrated: Always have plenty of water at hand. Drink water frequently to make up for the possible dehydration caused due to physical activity.
  • Stretching: Stretching your muscles is important because it warms up the body and prepares it for the intense physical activity of cycling.

Cycling is an interesting way to keep you healthy physically, mentally and environmentally.

We hope this blog inspires you to hop on a bicycle and start pedaling your way to better health! Share your cycling experiences with us in the comments below. For more fitness tips, speak to a certified expert by subscribing to GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here.

Strength Training Benefits For Aging Bodies

strength trainingStrength training is essential for everyone, serving not just to enhance muscle strength but also to bolster overall health regardless of age. Whether you are 25 or 65, incorporating some form of strength training into your daily routine is beneficial, though the specifics of the exercises may vary depending on one’s age group.

In this blog post, I will discuss the changes that begin to occur in our bodies as we enter our thirties and forties—changes that are often less than welcome. More importantly, I’ll explore how strength training plays a crucial role in counteracting these changes and significantly enhancing the quality of our lives.

I have experienced the positive changes, that my body has undergone over the last 4-5 years, just by incorporating a strength training routine in the form of workouts with weights, and using my own body weight, as I do in my yoga practice. One can even use resistance bands, the various gym equipment, or own body weight for resistance, by doing push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, leg squats or push-ups against a wall etc.

What Happens As We Age?

The human body goes through changes as we age, and some of the effects are obvious, as we cross middle age. Even healthy, normal ageing includes:

  • A Slower metabolism
  • Decreased muscle mass and strength
  • Increased body fat
  • Reduced bone density
  • Increased bone porosity
  • Stiff joints
  • Slower reflexes and reaction times
  • Decreased aerobic capacity

These are normal changes that we may experience as we age, though the severity varies from person to person. One of the most important reasons to exercise, and specifically include strength training, is to slow and minimize these changes.

Benefits of Strength Training

1. Increases Muscle Mass
As you age, muscle mass gradually decreases – a condition known as Sarcopenia. Individuals who are less active can expect to lose between 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after turning 30, with this rate accelerating after age 65. By age of 70, the average adult may have lost up to 25% of their muscle mass primarily due to disuse and inactivity. However, this loss isn’t irreversible. Engaging in any form of exercise can help regain muscle mass and strength, but weight lifting, strength training, and resistance training are particularly effective. Research shows that after just six months of strength training twice a week, the biochemical, physiological, and genetic characteristics of older muscles can be rejuvenated by nearly 15 to 20 years.

2. Improves Bone Health
Bone fractures and breaks are quite prevalent among older adults due to decreased bone density and osteoporosis. While there are various causes of osteoporosis that may require medical intervention, substantial evidence suggests that exercise can significantly enhance bone density. Moreover, osteoporosis can be both prevented and managed through strength training. Just as muscles grow stronger with activity, bones also gain strength when engaged in physical exercise. Weight-bearing exercises, in particular, bolster bone health by stimulating the production of new cells.

3. Improves Functional Ability/Movement
Increasing strength through training is crucial for enhancing everyday functionality. Regular strength training enables older adults to enhance their mobility, walk longer distances, and potentially decrease their reliance on assistive devices such as canes and walkers.

Additionally, building strength supports a variety of functional movements, including walking, sitting down and standing up from chairs or beds, climbing stairs or escalators, and carrying groceries. These improvements in physical capabilities make daily life more manageable and empower individuals to engage in a wider range of activities that they desire to pursue.

4. Increases Metabolism
Strength training is highly effective for enhancing your metabolism, which is the rate at which your body burns calories while at rest. Engaging in strength training causes your body to require more energy based on the intensity of the exercise. This not only leads to calories being burned during the workout but also increases calorie burn after the workout as your body returns to a resting state. Additionally, hormones like Testosterone and DHEA, which are vital for strength and energy, naturally decrease with age. However, regular strength training can significantly boost these hormone levels within 8-12 weeks.

5. Improves Brain Health
Aging can increase the risk of loneliness, social isolation, depression, and other mental health challenges. However, building strength enhances mobility and functionality, which can significantly improve overall health, elevate mood, and enhance the quality of life. Additionally, resistance training has been shown to slow cognitive decline associated with aging. Studies indicate that lifting weights can improve memory, attention span, and conflict resolution skills.

6. Improves Health Conditions
Type 2 Diabetes: Strength training effectively lowers blood sugar levels and enhances insulin sensitivity. This improvement helps facilitate the transport of blood sugar into cells, thereby optimizing how the body utilizes glucose.

Cardiovascular Health: When properly executed, strength training benefits both the muscular and cardiovascular systems. Strengthened muscles reduce the workload on the heart, enabling the lungs to process oxygen more efficiently with less effort. This efficiency leads to the heart pumping more blood with fewer beats, which in turn increases the blood supply to the muscles.

How Often Should You Do It?

It is recommended to engage in strength training three to five times per week for 20 to 30 minutes at a moderate intensity or two to three times per week for 15 to 20 minutes at a high intensity. However, always consult your doctor before starting any workout regimen, particularly if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, and seek professional guidance to ensure the correct technique. This helps in preventing injuries and maximizing the benefits of your workouts, especially when focusing on larger muscle groups which offer greater returns.

Let’s move beyond using age as an excuse and start prioritizing muscle health to enhance both our physical health and psychological well-being!

We hope this article helps you care for your muscles a little more and helps you improve your physical and psychological well-being as well.
