What Is Psoriasis and How Can You Manage It?

PsoriasisPsoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterized by red patches covered with white scales. The disease most commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, scalp, feet, and lumbosacral areas. It is a long-term autoimmune condition that accelerates the growth cycle of skin cells and causes inflammation due to immune system dysfunction.

Psoriasis tends to worsen during cold and dry seasons. While the exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood, it is believed to result from various factors such as infections, obesity, certain medications, stress, alcohol abuse, endocrine disorders, severe sunburn, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Most Common Symptoms

  • Dry or cracked skin that may bleed or itch
  • Small scaling spots, most commonly seen in children
  • Itching, burning, dryness or soreness
  • Thickened or pitted nails
  • Swollen or stiff joints
  • Crack on the soles of the feet
  • Recent changes in your life, such as illness or increased stress.

How Can You Manage It?

Here are some effective tips to help you manage Psoriasis.

  1. Limit Shower Time: Prolonged showers can increase moisture loss from the skin, making it irritated and dry, which should be avoided, especially in the case of psoriasis.
  2. Apply a Cool Compress: A cold compress, such as an ice or gel pack, can provide relief from itching associated with psoriasis.
  3. Salt Water Bath: Soaking in a saltwater bath helps soften scales and may ease inflammation and irritation. Add half a cup of Dead Sea salt to bathwater and soak for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight increases inflammation in the body. Regular exercise and a low-calorie diet can help. Include cardio, strength training, and stair climbing in your routine to reduce the risk of inflammation.
  5. Exposure to Sunlight: A deficiency in vitamin D can aggravate psoriasis. Moderate exposure to sunlight can help improve symptoms.
  6. Have Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Thanks to its antiseptic properties, ACV may help alleviate itching or irritation, especially on the scalp. Mix 2 parts water with 1 part ACV, apply to the scalp, let it stay for 10 minutes, and rinse off with shampoo.
  7. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated keeps your skin healthy and reduces the number and severity of flare-ups.
  8. Add Olive Oil in the Bath: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, olive oil helps soothe irritated skin. Add 2 teaspoons to your bathwater or apply a small amount directly to the affected area.
  9. Apply Raw Glycerin to Affected Areas: Psoriasis often leads to dry, scaly skin. Applying raw glycerin hydrates the skin and alleviates symptoms. The best time to apply is before bedtime.
  10. Manage Stress: Stress can trigger and worsen psoriasis. Practice deep breathing, yoga, meditation, or engage in hobbies to stay stress-free.
  11. Good Quality Sleep: Poor sleep worsens psoriasis symptoms by increasing stress levels. Ensure you get enough quality sleep to allow your body to rejuvenate and repair itself.

We hope these easy and effective tips help you manage psoriasis. If the issue persists or gets worse, seek out a medical professional or consult a GOQii Doctor by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.

3 Simple Ways to Strengthen Willpower and Achieve Goals

willpowerFrom personal experience, even you might have noticed that most resolutions to join the gym, eat a healthy diet or get proper sleep often go unfulfilled after the first month of the year. While we are often excited to start a diet routine or make exercise a habit, it never works out for long. The enthusiasm wanes and by this time around, there’s barely enough willpower to pull through.

Understanding Willpower

It isn’t completely uncommon to eat healthy for a few days and then go back to indulging in cakes and cookies. Temptations are something that the human mind can seldom control. Temptations of any kind are a good way to test ourselves, especially when trying to follow a strict diet regime.

I often wonder what could come between an individual and their goal that could make it or break it.

When I decided to take up some diet or an exercise routine, I knew the benefits of it. I knew how to do it and what to do as well. Despite all this awareness, something wasn’t right. That triggered a thought in me… I came to realize that my willpower was less!

To achieve a difficult task, one needs tremendous willpower and having the willpower to overcome difficulties in health is paramount!

Most importantly, do not confuse willpower with enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is something that can lead us to start a process, but when the initial excitement dies out, you’re back to square one! “Will” is the desire to make sure you are up to your goal and go through the process wholeheartedly to achieve that goal!

Studies have proven that taking small steps towards a large goal, structured in a sequence, strengthens practical approaches. Once you know how to approach your goal practically, it becomes easier. This, in turn, strengthens willpower. Procrastination can hamper the will. If you know you have got to do something to achieve your goal, just go ahead, work on it and complete the task.

3 Simple Tips to Strengthen Your Willpower:

1. Note Down Your Goal

Write down your thoughts or goals. Making a list helps as a reminder to keep you on track toward your goal. Make sure you write it down where it is easily visible to you. For instance:

  • A sticky note on your fridge.
  • A note on your office soft board.
  • Motivational quotes downloaded on your tab or phone.

2. Meditate For 5 Minutes a Day

  • Sit up straight and focus your attention on your breath.
  • When your mind wanders, bring your attention back to breathing

You’ll be building willpower by practicing self-awareness. When you are aware of what you are doing, you’re engaging the part of your brain responsible for willpower. Meditation not only helps you focus but also strengthens self-control. As a bonus, deep, slow breathing calms the mind and improves mental clarity.

3. Get Enough Sleep

As you know, adults need 7-8 hours of sleep daily, teens need at least 9, and kids in elementary and middle school require 10-12 hours. Sleep deprivation makes us susceptible to temptations and pulls us away from our goals. Self-control requires loats of brain power, and when we are tired, our body doesn’t deliver enough glucose to the brain to get the willpower engine going.

In conclusion, remind yourself of what you really want rather than what you think you should want. Ask yourself frequently – “How do I want to feel?” Then visualize what you will lose if you give in to temptation.

We hope this article helps you build willpower and stick to your health and life goals! 7 Effective Ways To Beat Stress

stress bustingIt’s astonishing to discover that 1 out of 5 people suffer from stress. Digging deeper, the root cause often points to expectations—expectations from jobs, bosses, colleagues, family, or friends. When expectations remain unfulfilled, they can manifest as stress or even depression.

Not all disappointments lead to depression, but anything that occupies your mind persistently or causes emotional discomfort can be considered stress.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, here are 7 effective ways to beat stress and regain control of your life.

7 Ways to Beat Stress

  1. Breathe Deep & Let Go:
Spiritual masters often advise: “Forgive everyone and yourself, accept everyone and yourself, and love everyone and yourself.” When faced with negativity or bad experiences, take a deep breath and repeat these words to yourself.
  2. Set a Goal:
Spend at least 30 minutes daily with yourself. Engage in your favorite activity during this time. If you don’t have a hobby or can’t think of one, it’s time to dedicate 60 minutes to self-discovery and personal time.
  3. Bunk the Routine:
Once every six months, step away from your daily grind. It might sound immature, but bunking your routine for a day to explore, relax, or spend time with loved ones can recharge your mental energy.
  4. Make a Memory Box:
Create a memory box – physical or digital. Fill it with cherished memories in the form of photos, notes, videos, or keepsakes. Revisit this box regularly to relive joyful moments and uplift your mood.
  5. Treat Yourself:
You don’t need to prove your worth to anyone as long as you’re doing your best. When feeling exhausted, take a break. Reward yourself with your favorite dish (in moderation), activity, or pastime. Value your efforts and prioritize self-care.
  6. Say No to Negativity:
Avoid entertaining negative thoughts. When negativity creeps in, distract yourself with something positive—be it meditation, singing, dancing, or engaging in a meaningful conversation. Choose whatever works best for you in the moment.
  7. Smile:
A smile is your best accessory. It not only improves your mood but also spreads positivity to those around you. Let your smile work its magic!

Which of these 7 tips resonates with you the most? Do you have a unique way to beat stress? Share your thoughts and queries in the comments below!

11 Unhealthy Habits That Are Destroying Your Health

unhealthy habitsOld habits die hard and that’s true. Habits are stored in our subconscious mind. We keep on carrying out tasks or habits, without even realizing we are doing it. While some habits help us complete day to day activities, there are some which aren’t good for our health, especially the ones which affect our diet. It is crucial to follow habits which have a positive impact on health. It is time to identify unhealthy habits and get rid of them for good health’s sake.

Unhealthy Habits You Need to Stop

  1. Skipping Breakfast: For some people, skipping breakfast is an easy way to cut calories. However, if you skip breakfast, you’ll probably overeat during lunch. Secondly, in the morning, our metabolic rate is high. To maintain it, we need to give enough fuel to our body in the form of breakfast. So you should not skip your morning meal at any cost.
  2. Emotional Eating: If you are stressed or if you’ve had a bad day, call a friend, listen to music, write in a journal or try going for a walk. These options are better than binge-eating junk food due to emotional reasons.
  3. Including Unhealthy Drinks: At some point, we all reach out for a soft drink after a meal. It has somehow become a norm. Sweetened/Aerated drinks increase your daily calorie intake and cause other health issues. Instead, drink lemon water, coconut water or buttermilk. In fact, you can make your own healthy energy drinks!
  4. Eating Out Frequently: Avoid the habit to grab something unhealthy when going out for a long day. Take healthier shortcuts! Eat a vegetable sandwich, protein salad, whole grain crackers & veggies with humus. You can even carry fresh fruits.
  5. Munching While Watching TV or During Long Drives: Try to avoid unnecessary munching while watching your favorite program or when you are on a long drive or a road trip. Instead of having processed foods like chips, cookies, etc. you can have a handful of nuts, air popcorn, seed trail-mix and unsalted peanuts.
  6. Lack of Sleep: Sleep works as nutrition for the brain. Our body needs 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Less than 8 hour of sleep triggers a cortisol spike and hampers our metabolism and contributes to weight gain. Shut your computer, mobile, and TV at least an hour before sleeping.
  7. Long Gap Between Meals: There shouldn’t be a huge time gap between meals. When you are on a weight loss journey, you shouldn’t just be careful about the food you eat but the time you eat as well! Many studies show that, if you are not eating at the right time, you might not be able to achieve your weight loss goals. The ideal gap between breakfast – Lunch & lunch –dinner should not exceed 4 hours.
  8. Eating Late at Night: You should not eat dinner very late as it promotes weight gain. Your last meal or your dinner should always be 3 hours before bedtime.
  9. Consuming Extra Salt: Eating a lot of salt can cause an increase in water weight and fat in your body. If you eat too much salt, extra water gets stored in your body which can raise your blood pressure.  Higher blood pressure leads to heart attacks, strokes and kidney diseases. Avoid sauces, pickles, sprinkling extra on salad & curd in your meals.
  10. Eating Heavy Meals Close to Bedtime: Avoid eating heavy meals close to bedtime, it can cause acidity, severe heartburn and make difficult to fall asleep. Also avoid tea, coffee, and chocolate in the evening because caffeine can stay in our system for 5-6 hrs and suppress the sleep hormone.
  11. Putting Calorie Restrictions: Eating more calories than your body needs will lead to weight gain. Whereas, eating lesser calories than your body needs will lead to weight loss. However, restricting calories too much may slow down metabolism, can cause fatigue, nutrient deficiencies and lower immunity too.

These 11 unhealthy habits can contribute to weight gain, affect metabolism and can be extremely detrimental to your health. Avoid them and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
