What I considered a huge hardship, fitness has now become part of life for me

coll

He has struggled since childhood, adolescent years and now as a young adult with excess weight issues. He was always ridiculed for being overweight. There was not a single day that he did not spend feeling bad about being on the heavier side. He tried everything on this planet and kept yo-yo to shed those extra kilos but nothing worked.  Finally, some correct advice from his personal coach to eat right and workout correctly has helped him shed 7 kilos within a month and totally 18 kgs. Let’s hear Nilesh’s story in his own words.

I have been overweight my entire life. I started out as a chubby baby, who grew into an overweight child and by the time I graduated High school I was starting my adulthood as morbidly obese. And as I moved from my 18 to early 20s, I had crossed a landmark of 100 kgs. Things become critical when people started knowing you by the”extra pounds” you have. And that is what actually I was as a person. And, let me tell you that feeling was really depressing.

Post this realisation, my weight went up and down for years as I went on one fad diet after another. I would try a new diet for a week or two, would try every other gym that opened up in the vicinity but if I did not get the quick fix that was promised to me I would quit, go on a month long binge, and gain everything back.

It wasn’t until I realised that quick fixes and magic gyms don’t work for me and questioned myself would I able to lose those weight that had been holding me down all my life. I realized (thanks to the million advice you get when you have those extra pounds) that if I had to put down “this portion of body”(the splurged fat, the cellulite’s and my dear pot belly) that was originally not part of me, I had to make changes to my lifestyle- the way I eat, drink, sleep and exercise.

My first task was to set a goal for myself and needed someone to monitor that so that I don’t cheat. While I was still evaluating what is to be done, my boss introduced me to GOQII. At the first instance, it was just a device that would keep track but, I took it as it was providing me with all features that I was looking for- A target setter and someone who could monitor.

And believe me, it has been a life-changing decision for me. I chose Trishala Chopra as my coach as her profile said she dealt with all the problems that I was going through currently. And, it worked a miracle. She kept me well motivated to complete my physical training goals and also supported my diet well by introducing small changes but, effective changes to my diet.

These changes were implemented in a manner that didn’t stress me to remove extra time from my daily schedule but, were made part of my lifestyle. In a month’s time of being a part of the GOQii ecosystem, I lost close to 7 kgs. My Coach has been flawless in her approach and the knowledge she shares with me. The best part is that I have made small changes in my lifestyle that has led to tremendous improvement. In measurable terms, I have gone two sizes smaller (from an XXL to L size) on all my clothing. This is a great achievement for me. Also, Weight has gone down by over 15kgs. Diabetes is in check. The best part about all of this is that from being a person who hardly walked a few hundred steps a few months ago, recently completed a half marathon. I had very low step counts may be 500-600 before GOQii and now I do a daily step count of over 15,000 steps.

My coach has been instrumental in guiding me every day with regard to the dos and don’ts towards leading a healthy life.

I feel much lighter and energetic now. And, fitness has become part of life than what it was earlier- a huge hardship.

What does Coach Trishala Nitesh Chopra have to say about Player Nilesh Maurya?

Nilesh was highly obese when he was assigned to me. He was close to 117 kgs. He had been an overweight person all his life. His lifestyle was sedentary and workout was negligible. He used to participate in food challenges and had the capacity to eat so many large pizzas, it was not easy for me to change his food habits.

The first thing I planned was to get him to move his body. Walk was the first thing he started and the best thing about him was his willingness to do things. When he started, he was a bit lazy which required me to poke him to doing his activities. I monitored every single activity and motivated him to just reach an everyday target.

Then the eating habits were changed, reduced the excess carbohydrate contents in his diet and he started losing weight with little changes here and there and here he is today from 117 kgs to 99 kgs. His sheer dedication and hard work have made him achieve this! More kgs to go…this is just the beginning .

Fitness as a lifestyle rather than crunching of data

1

Pavan Prabhakar is a busy corporate executive working with a leading IT firm in Bengaluru. Like every other busy professional his grouse was a sense of having no time for exercise and healthy eating. The worst was that he was aware that he was doing everything wrong but was nevertheless unable to rectify his situation. A suggestion from a colleague changed everything for him. Today, he is super active, he has lost weight and is even working towards running a marathon next year. Let’s understand from Pavan what and how things have changed for him in the last year.

I had a highly sedentary lifestyle. No exercise, No monitoring of what I eat or any kind of activity. It was a double whammy in the sense that I was neither attempting to check on what I was eating nor was I consciously attempting to do any exercise. All in all, there was zero discipline …in life…

I was aware of my issues and the only way I thought I could fix my situation was through a   wearable (fitness tracker). I knew a fitness band can get me active and healthy. The only fitness band I knew of was Fitbit. But, a colleague of mine at work suggested GOQii and also explained the coach factor to me.

I researched online and read more on the coaching service. That is what attracted me to GOQii. I needed somebody knowledgeable to nag me and get me on track. I needed to get some discipline in Life and do the right things so as to be fit and healthy.

I came on board GOQii in Oct 2015 with the aim to get fit and active, control and manage my weight and train for a fitness event such as the marathon. After a few weeks of having GOQii, I noticed the changes within myself.

Today, life is more disciplined and I am addicted (in a positive way) to GOQii. Thanks to my coach I am doing all the right things. I have stopped snacking, I am eating healthily and also exercising daily. I am doing all those things which I thought was impossible to do.

The outcome of being active and eating right has resulted in my BP being controlled and 8 kgs of weight loss.. I also enrolled into a gym, on the insistence of my coach, for strength training. I do cardiovascular exercises and strength training in addition to walking. Tabata and Interval Training is also added to my routine now.

The GOQii band, according to me, is one of the best in its class. The whole concept of looking at fitness as a “Well-being solution” rather than just crunching data is what differentiates GOQii from the others. It is this differentiation that lured me toward it.

It’s been almost a year and have seen amazing results. The “Coach Concept” is like having a virtual well-wisher for you who keeps monitoring your steps, intake, and workouts. In addition, throughout the process, my coach is able to offer, some great advice. You also get some very informative (myths busted) nutrition-related mails from the master coach.

I am very happy to report that I am now addicted to the habit of watching my step count quite a few times a day…I am cognizant of what I eat, thanks to the log feature of the app. I go for regular walks. What was initially 20 minutes has now increased to 45 minutes.

I am hooked on to achieving my goals. I like to see myself getting the necessary step counts on a daily basis. From 7k steps, I increased to 9k steps and now I clock 15k steps daily. Soon, I am going to increase it to 20k steps. I am also happy that I now fit into my earlier clothes. And I have more energy! I have even reduced my coffee intake from 3 cups to 1 and stopped snacking.

Overall, I feel good about myself. I am more confident and my attitude towards life has changed. My goal going forward is to run a marathon.

What does Pavan’s coach Dhruvi Rathod have to say?

Rolling back to the day when I first spoke with Pavan, I figured he was clear in his head and knew what he was doing, what was right and what needed to be improved. There were quite a few things we discussed during the call -laying our focus on reducing weight and leading a healthy life.

It was not very difficult for me to convince and convey the concept of healthy, mindful eating with some regular workouts. With all the intentions to improve and create a healthier person, we started our journey with small changes like from walking for 20 mins to 45 mins daily, having balanced meals instead of unhealthy snacking, and having an increased water intake. It took but a few days for Pavan to incorporate all these changes.

Each time we connected to review our goals, we had more goals accomplished and always were ready to move forward to that “healthy self” he wanted to become

We inched ahead with inclusion of some high intensity exercises like Tabata, interval training.   We supported it with some good nutrition by making pre and post workout snacks as a daily ritual.

Meanwhile, we also took up some challenges like completing 1 lakh steps in 10 days, doing a water detox, Doing 10 mins meditation etc..Pavan has been a quick learner and very open to try new things which are beneficial for his health…

He has become the model of what it means to create a truly healthy lifestyle rather than merely a collection of data points or biometric units.

“The fitness tracker has helped me bring about a discipline within myself”

1

He is a busy financial services profession and practically lives out his suitcase. He was leading a sedentary lifestyle with no workout or any fitness regime whatsoever. To add to this he would eat out more often than not. All put together it was a recipe for an unhealthy lifestyle. He needed to change that for himself. He decided to run the marathon which means it will automatically motivate him to run and do exercise every day. Let us hear it from Gawir Baig how he managed to shed his sedentary lifestyle and run a marathon.

I work in the financial services sector and my job is hectic that involves lots of travel. I practically led a very sedentary lifestyle with no much workout or exercise regime and lots of eating out. Everything combined was getting me to be unhealthy. I decided I need to do something about this and decided to run the 2015 Mumbai half-marathon and even registered for it. My wife was aware of it.

3-4 months before the marathon she gifted me a GOQii fitness tracker to start preparing for the marathon using GOQii as a tool, as a catalyst which could help you in getting ready for the marathon. Technically I got a GOQii in October 2014 and ParwageAlam was my coach.

The reason I was given the GOQii was to use this as a tool to start running and maintain the habit of running which could help me later to run 21 km half-marathon. I have run a bit in the past but because of my travel schedule, I was not regular. GOQii has helped me because I have a coach who monitors my activity, what I eat, what kind of diet I am following, the portions I am eating and whether I am drinking enough water or no.

The tracker has helped in terms of getting into a rhythm of following a fixed pattern for running and exercise as well as the dietary part. It helps me in bringing some kind of discipline within me amidst all the madness around. When I am traveling and even otherwise I used to eat out often and followed a very unhealthy diet pattern. By having a GOQii coach this has reduced drastically.

My coach then gave me a plan of how should I go about running for the next 4 weeks before the marathon. So maybe Monday 3 km then a break, Wednesday (3+2) km and so on. It was a pattern that helped me in terms of also increasing my stamina for running the marathon. I still consider the best part of this entire GOQii experience in terms of someone as a coach proved good to build up the stamina for the marathon.

I run better now and hence still continuing to run. I run about 4-5 days a week. I have come to a stage where if I do not run I don’t feel good. I run about 5 km and cool down on 1 km and warm up of 1 km; so 7 km altogether.

There have also been some habit changes brought in such not having a fruit after a meal. I have started having more proteins during lunch time. My lunch used to be completely carbohydrate driven now I include curds. I am not a vegetarian but my lunch is mostly vegetarian lunch so there is hardly any protein in that. Adding some curd is good protein. These dietary changes that I have brought about are helping me and I think the other thing which has really benefited me is having 5-6 meals a day.

Small and frequent meals which I wasn’t having earlier. I used to have good breakfast, a good lunch, a good dinner and sometimes maybe an evening snack which was very unhealthy evening snack. Frequent meal intake is something which is brought to me and I am continuing to do that.

On the sleep cycle, I wouldn’t say much because that’s correlated to the kind of work I do.  I have to improve my sleep cycle. But, I am glad that on the dietary part and with regard to exercises GOQii has brought a good impact.

My health goal when I started on GOQii was training for the marathon. At that time, I also weighed close to 100. There was an instance when I was about to do skydiving and the threshold for skydive was 100 kilos, it was mentioned over there although they were a bit fine even if it is above 1 or 2 kilos above 100. I was almost at that threshold.

When I started preparing for the marathon, my weight reduced to about 92 kilos. Now my health goal is also to further reduce my weight by purely doing more activity and eating right. Over the next 18 months, I want to have a normal life and eventually bring down my weight to 82 kilos which are actually the right weight as per the BMI section. I am still at about 92.

I am happy with my progress thus far. Now I really feel bad if I don’t run on a particular day. Frequent meal system is what has been inculcated in my dietary habits and that has resulted in the gradual weight loss.

What does coach Parwage Alaam have to say about Gawir Baig?

Gawir Baig is a guy with full determination. If he decides to do something – he will achieve it. When he joined GOQii he wanted to run Marathon, so I guided him with the proper schedule of running and following up with the practice session. He was really amazing – hardly miss his workout (running practice + Strengthening exercise). Then on the final day of Marathon, he completed his first half marathon within two and half hours.

During his practice session, he challenged himself to run 10 KM in 68 Min on 23rd August, which was the qualifying run for Marathon and he prepared himself within 3 weeks despite his work schedules. Simultaneously he also followed all the tips in terms of diet pattern. He properly maintains his protein, carbs, vitamins intake and tries to have a balanced plate in every meal which has also helped him get lighter.
