Myths and Health Benefits of Meditation

Benefits-of-Meditation

Stress can be dangerous. Here is a link to a blog on Stress

http://goqii.com/blog/avoid-stress-lead-a-healthy-and-happy-life/

In this blog, I am going to talk about meditation and its health benefits in detail. Most foreigners  are it the Americans or the Europeans aren’t raised to sit and say “Om.” But, today whether it is outside of India or within our country at every nook and corner you can find a yoga and meditation centre. Meditation has gained millions of converts, helping them ease chronic pain, anxiety, stress, improve heart health, boost mood and immunity, and resolve a lot of medical issues even pregnancy problems.

According to doctors, any condition that’s caused or worsened by stress can be alleviated through meditation. Peace is something we all seek for or let’s say satisfaction is something we all long for. Satisfaction could be different for different people. For some satisfaction could mean happiness, for some it could be an achievement. The influence of external factors in our life largely decides our state of mind to be happy, sad or angry.

We often seek for happiness or peace in the outside world. People have their own ways of finding peace or relaxing their mind. Most common practice is going out of town or getting away from our usual routine. It’s very necessary to find peace within us as not everyone can afford to go out of station often. So here is what we can do and also save some money in the process to reach our goal of happiness and peace- MEDITATE.

Meditation you can transform the mind. Meditation doesn’t mean that you have to sit in a particular posture and focus on any single point on the wall or certain point. The definition of meditation is different for different people. If you ask me, meditation is the art of focusing our attention (100%) in one area. We all believe that our mind gets maximum rest while sleeping; however, the fact is that our mind gets to rest and relief while meditating.

Doctors who recommend meditation say that the relaxation response [from meditation] helps decrease metabolism, lowers blood pressure and improves heart rate, breathing, and brain waves. Tension and tightness seep from muscles as the body receives a quiet message to relax.

Articles in medical journals on Meditation indicate there is scientific evidence that shows how meditation works. In people who are meditating, brain scans called MRI have shown an increase in activity in areas that control metabolism and heart rate. Other studies on Buddhist monks have shown that meditation produces long-lasting changes in the brain activity in areas involved in attention, working memory, learning, and conscious perception.

There are some dangerous myths about meditation like:

1.          Meditation is a religion: Meditation is not related to any religion. However, meditation brings all religion together.

2.         Just relaxation: Meditation is not about just relaxation like sitting on your sofa or lying on your resting chair, meditation helps to produce specific chemical changes in the brain. For example, Transcendental meditation is known to cause the brain to release a soothing hormone known as prolactin.

3.         Sit in the lotus posture to meditate: There is a myth that meditating you should always sit in a lotus posture. However, while meditating it is more important to be comfortable and steady. You can sit cross-legged, on a chair, in a sofa – it is fine, but it is mandatory that you have to maintain the same position till you finish meditating.

4.         Meditation is for old people: Most of the people believe that meditation is only for people who have reached a certain age or for old people. That is so untrue. Meditation is universal and anyone can do it. It adds value to lives of people of all age groups. A study in the American Journal of Hypertension showed that teenagers who meditated for 15 minutes twice a day for four months were able to lower their blood pressure a few points.10 minutes of meditation in the morning clean your mind, it gives zeal and enthusiasm.

5.         Meditation is like hypnotizing yourself: Most of the people believe that Meditation is hypnotising you. But, that’s again false. In hypnotism no one is aware what he or she is going through, however, in meditation, you are always aware of each and every moment.

If you are feeling tense, tired, depressed or anxious or stressed, the one simple word I can suggest or recommend is ‘Meditation’. Five to 10 minutes of meditation will help you relax and get over your stress and restore your calm and inner peace.

Anyone can start meditating with a small practice. It’s really very simple and does not require you to visit therapists or a practitioner of meditation. It also does not require any equipment. You can practice meditation whenever and wherever you are – in office, home, on the bus or train, or waiting at the doctor’s clinic or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting.

Meditation works as a medicine of mind and body and produces a deep state of relaxation.  During meditation, we centralize our attention and get rid of the unwanted stress-causing thoughts. This process results in enhanced physical and emotional well-being.

Some great Benefits of Meditation:

Psychological Benefits: Reduces stress and anxiety, increases creativity and intelligence. Reduces depression, increases learning ability, reasoning and memory power, reduces irritability and moodiness, Feelings of vitality and rejuvenation, increase emotional control, self-esteem, alertness, Improves relationships and also concentration

Physiological Benefits: May help lower blood pressure, Prevents or relives any pain, boosts immune system- with meditation higher levels of antibodies are produced against the flu virus, according to the study in Psychosomatic Medicine, lowers blood cholesterol levels, improves airflow through the respiratory system, especially in those with asthma, Youngers your biological age.

Women can also benefit from meditation. Quoting a study from an article in WebMD, the article says that PMS symptoms subsided by 58% when women meditated. certain other issues such as anxiety, depression, and fatigue can also be reduced by a regular meditation program.

Save Your Lungs!!!

effects of smog

Recently, a sporty 6-year-old girl in Delhi complaint to her mother saying, “Mom, I feel no breath”. Now, this is alarming and also sad for the people in the capital city who are confined inside the four walls of their home. People are being warned from stepping out for workouts, cycling and runs.

A new study by the most reputed medical journal-‘Lancet’ in 2015 indicated that India topped the list of countries with pollution-related deaths, with 2.51 million people dying prematurely in the country that year due to diseases linked to air, water and other forms of pollution. India also topped the list of deaths linked to polluted air (1.81 million) and water (0.64 million). One-quarter of the world’s population now breathes unsafe air, according to the 2014 Environmental Performance Index (EPI).

Is this a new phenomenon for the Delhi-ites? No, the situation hasn’t changed in the last two years. It has only gotten worse from what it was, people claim. Delhi is indeed declared the most pollutant city in the world by the World Health Organisation and the people of Delhi are facing a public health crisis. The relationship between filthy air and poor health is frightening. Delhi’s bad air is already causing a spike in the people with asthma and reduced lung function. There is evidence of a spectrum of health problems, ranging from allergies and respiratory conditions, malformations, growth restrictions, all of which is a result of pollution.

Given this scenario, how do you save your lungs?

Lung Detox is something that Luke Coutinho, M.D., and master coach at GOQii recommend.

Particulates. Over time small particulate matter might damage your lungs permanently, making breathing difficult and forcing your heart to work harder.

Lung Detox Plan

-Previous night – soak 1 tbsp fenugreek (Methi) seeds in half cup water

-Wake up to 250ml warm water with lemon and a dash of cayenne pepper

-Drink the fenugreek water and chew on the seeds.
-10 mins later – 2 cloves of garlic crushed and consume with 1 tbsp raw honey or Manuka honey
Steam Time
-Boil some water, put into a large bowl, add 5-10 drops of pure eucalyptus oil or 1 drop peppermint oil, cover your head with a towel and do steam inhalation for 5 mins. Gentle deep inhalations and slow exhalations.
-Breakfast as normal, but add 300 ml fresh carrot juice with 1 tsp pure cold pressed coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil.
-Magic Lung breathing exercise (check method below)
-Post breathing exercise prepare a litre of the following concoction and have one cup warm.
Magic Tea –

  • 1 inch piece ginger /1 tsp dried ginger powder, cinnamon stick, ½ tsp basil/tulsi (fresh/dry), 1 tsp oregano dry (or fresh leaves), 3 peppercorns, 2 crushed elaichi, (optional , 1 -2 cloves crushed garlic), 1/4th tsp fennel seeds, pinch of ajwain, 1/4th tsp jeera (cumin)
  • Boil for 10 mins and simmer, strain and sip warm ( can add pure honey or jaggery to sweeten)

Lunch

-30 mins post lunch – 250 ml lemon water with a dash of cayenne pepper
-2 hours later – 300 ml fresh carrot juice with 1 tsp pure cold pressed coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil plus an evening snack
-30 mins later: Magic breathing exercise followed by a cup of lung tea concoction.
-Light walk or yoga
-30 mins before dinner: 250 ml lemon water with cayenne pepper
-Dinner plus 300 ml carrot juice as above

-Post dinner: 30 mins – one more cup of lung tea
-1 hour before bed – steam with 5-10 drops of eucalyptus oil for 5 mins
-Castor oil pack or rub (details below) for 30 mins

-Before bed – magic lung breathing exercise, meditate, sleep

 Magic lung breathing cleanse

Take a standing position. Keep your arms at your sides and your feet slightly apart. Relax.

  1. Take a few deep breaths and exhale through the nose.
    3. Now breathe in through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth until you cannot exhale any more. But do not stop here, because there is still air remaining in your lungs.
Some of the air remains in the lungs and is not replaced as we breathe. Now, force your diaphragm to exhale all the air from your lungs with wheezing. Several times exhale through the mouth with a “ho, ho, ho ho, ”

Until you feel there is no more air in the lungs. At this point, you will feel you have pulled in your belly toward the spine.

Through the nose, slowly inhale fresh, clean air in your empty lungs. Fill your lungs with air completely, and then hold your breath for 6 seconds, counting them slowly.

At this point, the oxygen has filled your lungs.

Again exhale through your mouth until there is no air left in your lungs and repeat the “ha…ha…” to expel the stale air out of the lungs.

Repeat the whole procedure as many times as you like. Besides purifying the lungs, this exercise has another benefit: your stomach will eventually become strong and toned skin will look radiant with a glow as you have helped remove excess carbon dioxide.

Here is small video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTbbua0iOSU&t=) by Luke Coutinho M.D,  where he explains all about what lungs are and how they function and finally how can we detox our lungs and keep it clean.

A timely video, when people across the country are suffering from air pollution around them.

Surya Namaskar-The 12 Commandments of Sun!

surya-namaskarAvinash, 40 years is hypertensive, diabetic and obese. He has a hectic lifestyle that involves lots of travel. His dietary habits are ill-disciplined and there is no physical activity. He visited me to tell him a mantra which can be followed easily and anywhere for his health. There are many people like Avinash who are concerned about their health but a busy lifestyle is a huge road-block to pursue anything. For such people the practice of Surya Namaskar- Sun Salutation is an ideal habit to inculcate. It is a dynamic exercise which can be done by anyone, at any age and the time required to practise this is not more than 10-15minutes.

Sun is the basic source of energy on the basis of which everyone exists. The importance of sun and the energy it provides is revered in various traditions. The energy of the sun has tremendous healing power, if tapped in the right way the results are miraculous in physical and mental ailments.

  1. Pranamasan- Stand erect with feet together. Join the palms together in front of the chest in a ‘namaste’ pose. Usually your hands will fall around your heart. Inhale and exhale slowly and gradually. This posture helps to induce a state of relaxation, calmness, gratitude and love.
  1. Hastauttanasana- Join your hands together again, inhaling stretch both arms above the head, palms facing upward. Arch the back and stretch the whole body backwards. This posture stretches the chest and the abdomen and lifts the energy to the upper parts of the body propelled by inhalation. It is an excellent stretch for the back muscles making it stronger.
  1. Padahastasana – Bend the body down while exhaling and keep the spine straight. Keep the legs straight and perpendicular to the ground. The knees should ideally be straight; don’t force yourself, but try to touch your feet. In due course you will!

This posture impacts the abdominal organs- liver, kidneys, pancreas, adrenals, uterus and ovaries. The power of digestion increases and female disorders such as prolapse and menstrual irregularities are relieved. A healthy flow of blood is sent to the spinal nerves as they are stretched and toned. The hamstring muscles at the back of the thigh and calf muscles are stretched and toned.

  1. Ashwa Sanchalanasana – While inhaling, extend the left leg back and drop the knee to the ground. The right knee is bent and kept between the hands and the right foot placed flat on the ground. Lift the spine and open the chest. Concentrate at the eyebrow center. This posture tones the abdominal organs and gives flexibility to the leg muscles during stretching. It is a balancing posture because the spine lengthens upwards while the hands are grounded.
  1. Parvatasana (Mountain posture)- On the exhalation bring the right leg back to join with the left leg. Simultaneously raise the buttocks and lower the head between the arms, so that the body forms a triangle with the floor and you look like a mountain! Try to place the heels flat on the ground.

This posture strengthens the nerves and muscles in the arms and legs, stretches the calf muscles and Achilles’ tendons and makes the spine straight and taut. It relieves varicose veins and tones spinal nerves. Parvatasana pulls up all the abdominal, pelvic and side muscles, stretches the spine and ribs, loosens the hips, stretches and exercises the usually inactive waist zone and helps to reduce a fat, flabby and protruding abdomen. It also aids correct breathing.

  1. Ashtanga Namaskara – Exhaling gently drop both knees to the ground and slowly slide the body down at an angle as you bring the chest and chin to the ground. All eight limbs – toes, knees, chest, hands and chin touch the floor. The buttocks are kept up. You can hold your breath. This posture develops the chest and strengthens arms. It sends additional blood to this area helping to rejuvenate the nerves. It works and improves the muscles of all the 8 limbs involved.
  1. Bhujangasana- On the inhalation, lower the hips while pushing the chest forward and upward with the hands, until the spine is fully arched and the head is facing up. The knees and lower abdomen remain above the floor. This pose expands the all organs of the chest and abdomen, relieving many ailments such as asthma, constipation, indigestion, kidney and liver problems. It is very helpful in relieving tension in the back muscles and spinal nerves.

From here on, you will do the poses in a reverse action.

  1. Parvatasana (Mountain posture) Exhale and get back to posture 5
  1. Ashwa Sanchalanasana- Inhale and swing the right leg forward between the hands. The left leg remains back. Resume posture 4.
  1. Padahastasana (Hand to foot posture)- Exhaling, bring the left foot forward. Join both legs and resume posture 3
  1. Hastauttanasana (Raised arm posture)- Inhale, raise the trunk up and bend backward. Resume posture 2
  1. Pranamasana (Salutation posture)- Straighten the body and bring your hands in front of the chest. Resume posture 1.

These simple set of 12 exercise postures ensures that you begin your day with a bang! As a Doctor who understands the science of human body, I believe these set of exercises are a boon. Every posture in Surya Namaskar has a corresponding effect on our internal organs as described above. For best results, one should practise these steps with deep inhalation and exhalation. You can also do each pose quickly and have 2-3 cycles of Namaskar, but for best results, take deep breaths- 5-8 for each pose.

It is not only beneficial for the physical body, but it leads to mental and spiritual growth if done regularly. In ancient literature even Patanjali describes it as a complete exercise- involving every muscle, joint and organs. It balances all the systems of human body- it rejuvenates the cells of the body leading to an ideal health state. The above mentioned benefits are just a few of the huge list of advantages.

Salute the Sun! Salute your Health!

Surya Namaskar is a set of 12 poses (steps), if performed in sequence every day with correct breathing is the best gift one can give to one’s own self. Ideally, these poses should be done empty stomach, at the time or just before sunrise. I will introduce you to each of these poses and the significance of each.

“If I am fit, my family is fit”

A

He had bordered close to being overweight due to an inactive and erratic lifestyle. He blamed it on his job in the real estate sector. Secondly, he has been an asthmatic since his kinder days and has been on medication for the same. The medication has created problems in his eyes so much so that it was on the verge of leading to Glaucoma. He wanted to rectify his state of health. Moreover, his wife was into regular fitness but, he never heeded her advice. Although he was always aware he had to get better for himself and his family. Riteish’s story in his own words.

I am in the real estate business and I have been in this industry for the last 20 years. My lifestyle has been extremely erratic and I used to binge a lot especially at night. My job is such that I never had my meals on time. As a result used to eat anything anytime. When I was younger it was fine I could cope with it. But, as age catches up this kind of erratic lifestyle brings with it several medical issues. I already am an asthmatic since my kinder days.

But, the one good thing that I have learned from my parents is to get an annual medical check-up done. This annual check-up gives you a clear indication of where you stand in terms of your health statistics. I wasn’t in good shape as per the reports. I was 95 kilos, sugar was borderline, hypertension could have become a concern and due to my asthmatic medication, the pressure in my eye was high which could eventually lead to Glaucoma I was told by my doctor. The net result of all these issues was that I was not in good shape. I wanted to change but, I was not able to do anything on my own.

My wife is very regular with her fitness and even runs marathons. She was running the marathon early this Jan and I had gone with her to the expo to collect her BIB. On my way out, I stopped by at the GOQii stall. I started chatting with one of the GOQii personnel who was explaining GOQii and its concept to me. I found it appealing.

I immediately chose GOQii for its comfort, ease of use, design, tracking features and above all the coaching factor and Karma points – all of which I loved. My physical activity will appear on my wrist using one button which makes it super easy to use. Having all my stats linked, recorded, and easily accessible on my phone and be monitored regularly by my coach who would be able to easily check-in on my progress seemed fantastic to me.

I spoke to my coach Dr. Amrita Saghu and discussed my problems with her in detail. My health goal was to lose 10 kilos within 3-4 months. She brought about a few changes in my lifestyle. I started to go for brisk walks, playing Tennis, made changes in food with the inclusion of fruits.

She also gave me weekly challenges such a sugar-free week, increasing AB exercises, stair climbing –first slow and then increased the intensity. Over the last three months since I have got the band I have been doing a whole lot. On a daily basis, I have been clocking an average of 12-13K steps. I have also started playing Tennis seriously.

Sometimes when I think about myself and how I went in for GOQii program, I find it funny. Funny because my wife is into fitness and a trainer herself but, never once did I bother to listen to her and her warnings. Every time she would ask me to get back on track I would make excuses. But, when I realized I had gone overboard with being unhealthy and decided to go in for a fitness band. It is after I got on the GOQii platform that I realized I had to remove time for myself and my health. If I do not make an effort then nobody can help me.

The lifestyle change has done well for me. I work out regularly, I am conscious about what I am eating and my meals are more wholesome now. My asthma is also under control. As per my health goal that I had set for myself I have part reached my goal. In 3 months I have lost about 7 kilos. My target is to get to 78 kilos. Proper nutrition and exercise tips helped him to get back on track. I have attended one or two GOQii active Sundays and also attended Luke Coutinho’s webinar on how to get the best out of your coach.

Tracking my physical activity through GOQii inspires me to keep moving. With so much on I can overcome time challenge by regularly monitoring my daily steps and pushing myself to make sure I reach my target if I feel I’m falling short. My coach and my own effort are helping me hit my target of 12k-13k steps walking and through other activities each day. ‘If I am fit my family is fit’.

How do I feel about myself? I feel great about myself. I am more confident and above all, I feel very positive. My happiness knew no bounds when I went to the store to buy myself a T-shirt and instead of an XXL I, this time around picked an XL T-shirt. My wife is also happy about the change I have undergone. People around me are all seeing this change in me and are amazed.

What does Coach Dr. Amrita Saghu have to say about RiteishParwani?

Riteish has been an active person right from the start. His goal was weight reduction. We started with regularizing his diet which was erratic prior to joining GOQii. There were large gaps between his main meals that were contributing to him eating unhealthy food on a regular basis. Apart from that, he would eat a heavy meal in one sitting. After getting on the GOQii platform he has become very conscious about what he eats. We added fruits and salads in his daily diet. The gap between his meals was reduced. Healthy snacks were introduced. His own efforts and dedication were enormous. He would share his exercise plans, diet plans with me daily. We would talk about the health benefits of the fruit or vegetable that he would be having later in the day. He also suffers from Asthma, with the exercise and the medicines he is experiencing a lot of improvement. His commitment towards his health is excellent. The two things that we work together on are Riteish’s effort and dedication and GOQii’s coaching which has helped him achieve his goals. I am sure that Riteish’s success story will inspire a lot of people who want to lead a healthy life.
