Gopalkala – a perfect evening snack

We always learn a lot from our tradition. It’s not only the stories but also practical implementations that we can do in our day to day life. I have grown up listening to stories of Lord Krishna. There is so much learning from our mythological stories and history alike.

As we all know, Lord Krishna was brought up in Gokul where there was plenty of milk & milk products. He was considered notorious for stealing milk, butter, and curd in his childhood. In one of the folklores, it’s mentioned that Lord Krishna used to gather all the food stuff brought by his fellows and mix it up.

This gave birth to the dish – Gopalkala (Dahikala) which has different foods mixed up with curd. We celebrate ‘Janmashtami’ –Lord Krishna’s birthday is truly the way Lord Krishna celebrated it. All the goodies that he liked are prepared at home. Gopalkala or Dahikala is made and given in offering to him on this occasion and then served to the rest of the people.

Let me now give you the recipe for this tasty dish called ‘Gopalkala’. It’s easy to prepare and doesn’t involve cooking. At the same time, it’s nutritious & healthy. One can have it as an evening snack, mid meal or even perfect pre workout meal! You can even give this dish to your kids in their school tiffin box.

Ingredients:

Thick Poha or rice flakes- 1 bowl

Fresh curds- 1 bowl

Chopped Cucumber- ½ bowl

Groundnuts- ¼ bowl

Future or roasted chick pea- ¼ bowl

Pomegranate- ¼ bowl

Grated coconut/ Coconut pieces -¼ bowl

Grated ginger- 1 Tsp.

Chopped Green Chillies- 1-2 Tsp.

Chopped coriander- 1-2 Tsp.

Sugar 1 Tsp.

Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Wash the rice flakes in the sieve and keep it aside for 5 min. Let it get soaked.
  2. In 1 big bowl beat the curd with sugar, salt, ginger, green chillies & coconut pieces.
  3. Add rice flakes in this bowl. Let it soak for another 5 min.
  4. Add cucumber, groundnuts, roasted chick pea, pomegranate seeds.
  5. Mix well & top it with coriander.

Nutrition Value:

It’s a healthy filling snack, nutritionally well balanced. Poha or rice flakes contribute for carbohydrate content. Curds, groundnuts and roasted chick pea make up for the protein content. The curd is an excellent pro-biotic good for gut health and digestion. It doesn’t require added oil or ghee but has healthy fats from groundnut (MUFA) & coconut. It completes your salads & fruits quota too through cucumber & pomegranate. So don’t worry about the fibres, vitamins and antioxidants.

Worried about Poha is a nice product and its GI (Glycemic Index)? Please don’t the protein, fats and fibres in it will bring down the GI.

So what are you waiting for for…. Don’t just eat it as an” Offering to God”. Include it in your daily meals.

Why dinner should be the lightest meal of the day?

“I am not losing any weight in spite of following so many things, one of my client cribbed. 

“What did you eat for dinner yesterday?”  I asked. His reply was, “2 Rotis + 1 bowl of Rice, Dal, Subzi, salad (as you have told) 1 bowl & 2 small gulab jamun,” and was defending his balanced meal.

“Your answer lies here….. Heavy dinner can be a reason for not losing weight,” I said.  “I shall explain to you how,” I added.

Yes! Heavy dinner can be the culprit for not losing weight. Reiterating the proverb that you would have heard an umpteen times “Breakfast should be like a Prince, Lunch like King & Dinner like a Pauper”.  There is definitely some truth in it.

Our body works on simple principle of demand and supply. Whenever we are more active we need more energy. Whereas when we aren’t much active we require less energy. From the time day our starts in the morning till night gradually our activity levels lowers (unless you work in night shifts). We really don’t require so much energy when we’re going to relax post dinner and ultimately sleep.

Having a lighter dinner aids digestion and helps you better utilise the nutrients. It is advisable to have a 2 hour gap before hitting the sack. This is one way to avoid that unnecessary fat and weight gain!

In order to be able to do this, you need to have a plan! If you’re not in a habit of having frequent meals, don’t have an evening meal, you’ll tend to eat more at dinner time. Also understand the psychological effect when you haven’t eaten anything post lunch except that cup of tea! You’ll land up on a feast because your brain is telling you that you are hungry.

Many scientific studies show that benefits of having lighter dinner

  1. Aids in good digestion and induces good sleep.
  2. You will be able to get up fresh the next morning
  3. Helps in faster gut clearing
  4. Helps reducing fat & weight
  5. Reduces risk of lifestyle diseases like type II Diabetes, Hypertension, High cholesterol etc.
  6. Helps in reducing PCOD & Hypothyroidism
  7. Improves metabolism

Ideal time for dinner is near sunset 6.30- 7 pm. If you can’t manage it, then simply split your dinner between 2 -3 small meals. Have evening meal between 5-7 pm.  Ideally, at the time you feel hungry post Lunch.  Have Roti/ Rice/ Bhakri/ Whole wheat bread etc. which is carbohydrate based for the first meal. Keep lighter part for the next one. That is 8-10 pm. Try to keep dinner low carb more in proteins & fibers. As this will prevent excess calories, give you proteins for muscle building throughout the night, fibers will help in gut clearing.

Options: Protein & fiber based.

Proteins: Eggs/Chicken/ Paneer/ Dal/ Sprouts/ Usal/Curds/ Yogurts/ Soya/ Tofu mixed with

Fibres: soups salads, stir fried veggies, raita, raw veggies etc.

It can be as simple as curd rice, Khichdi- Kadhi etc. But, watch the carbohydrate quantity. Avoid having fruits at this time as they contain fructose which is a simple sugar. If you feel hungry again at night have a glass of milk with turmeric powder or a bowl of soup/ salads or few nuts.

Most also worry that they cannot have dinner at the said time that one should actually have it. I would say, “Your health is more important to you. Don’t compromise on it. You can eat at your respective timings. But, make sure you eat right.”
