Here’s How The GOQii Vital ECG Saves Lives

GOQii Vital ECGDr. Arvind Sinha has been suffering from hypertension for the last 3 decades and has had cardiac problems for close to 2 decades now. He first developed cardiac problems when he was around 46-47 years of age due to a sedentary lifestyle. About 25 years back, he underwent a coronary bypass operation. Almost a year ago his son Dr. Chandan Sinha came across the GOQii Vital ECG band, he decided to get it for his father to keep a check on his ECG. 9 months later, Dr. Arvind Sinha, one afternoon, suddenly developed palpitations. This kind of palpitations was something he had never experienced in 3 years. He had an oximeter by his bedside and so he first checked his SpO2 levels. His SpO2 levels were normal and BP showed 148-88mmHg. But, the palpitations continued for a while. Then around half an hour later, he again felt uneasy which is when he decided to use the GOQii Vital ECG band and check his ECG. The time was around 5:30 pm. The ECG reading showed abnormal – Atrial Fibrillation. Dr. Sinha was having palpitations when he took the ECG. He took his ECG (on his own) and the device helped him to understand what was happening to him.

GOQii Vital ECGDr Chandan Sinha says, “We do have a proper ECG machine at home where we would take my father’s ECG readings. But, it would have taken a while before we took his ECG when he had palpitations. In such a scenario, the device is handy and it helped understand the abnormal situation immediately. What surprised us was we got a call from their Bangalore HQ and the person on the other side sounded concerned and was asking for the well-being of the patient. Moreover, he wanted us to connect to a doctor if required. Now, this is something which would help the elderly staying alone in smaller cities of India. I feel it’s a must have item for parents, not a normal fitness band but the perfect health tracker!” he adds.

1.53 mn deaths happen in India due to heart attacks every year

How often have we have heard of situations wherein a cardiac patient has felt uneasy due to a very high heart rate (upwards of 180 beats per minute), uneasiness in the chest, severe sweating, high BP and has been rushed to the hospital and the first thing that is done is to take an ECG. Imagine if the same can be taken immediately with a band on the wrist of the patient; it can save a life. The GOQii Vital ECG device, according to both Dr Arvind and Dr Chandan Sinha, is a good preventive device on the wrist that gives you an indication to take action immediately.

The likelihood of surviving a heart attack is over 80% if action is taken within  the first 2 hours

GOQii Vital ECG provides ECG reports powered by Tricog Health, a platform that instantly and accurately interprets ECG readings with advanced technology and medical expertise. GOQii’s data shows that since August 2019, a total of over 10000 ECGs have been taken and the average age, of approximately 1000 users using the device, is 45 years of age. The ECG report is verified by Tricog & delivered within one minute in GOQii App. The ECG report in PDF format can be shared immediately with the doctors via Whatsapp, E-Mail, etc.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 17.7 million people lost their lives due to cardiovascular disease in 2015, making it the number one killer. In India, around 1.5-3 million deaths happen due to heart attacks every year. The high rate of mortality caused by heart attacks is mainly because the symptoms are often ignored or misunderstood. The likelihood of surviving a heart attack is over 80% if the action is taken within the first 2 hours. However, the average time between symptoms and treatment in India is over 6 hours.

“We at GOQii are fostering a preventive health ecosystem. Our aim is to focus on real-time and easy ECG diagnostics on your fingertip, coupled with lifestyle coaching advice. We are interpreting GOQii Vital EGG data along with state-of-the-art deep learning-based Arrhythmia detection algorithms. This is a big step towards the reduction in India’s mortality rate due to heart disorders and is in support of PM Modi’s Vision of #FitIndia,” says Vishal Gondal, Founder & CEO, GOQii.

According to doctors, Cardiac diseases is the number 1 killer in India, due to the lack of awareness and availability of necessary medical infrastructure. Most people only check their ECG once they have suffered a cardiac episode, even though it is a quick and inexpensive test. The reason being most primary care clinics are not equipped with ECG machines owing to their high cost and complex nature. Secondly, a lot of primary care doctors do not receive sufficient training in ECG interpretation.

“Heart palpitations which tend to get overlooked is a strong indicator or symptom of an underlying heart problem. By raising awareness & providing a band which easily provides an ECG report by means of a simple touch, GOQii is revolutionizing the prevention of serious heart and brain ailments,” says Rajashree Menon, Business Head- Healthcare, GOQii.

The GOQii Vital ECG along with Tricog is here to bring in a new generation of heart monitoring on people’s wrists. “Undetected Arrhythmias can lead to potentially life-threatening conditions like strokes, that can be prevented with the use of technology and medicine,” says Dr. Charit Bhograj, Chief Cardiologist and CEO at TricogBhograj.

Adding and echoing Dr Bhograj’s words is Dr. Vanita Arora, Director and Head Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab & Arrhythmia Services, Max Hospital, Saket. She adds, “The GOQii Vital ECG band will help diagnose symptoms of arrhythmia that are transitory in nature, thus aiding in quick analysis and interpretation as the symptoms exist only for a brief period. The patient can understand that the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat is irregular in a period of 30 seconds, and can take immediate action to prevent any fatalities.” Atrial Fibrillation increases the risk of Stroke and associated complications.

The GOQii Vital ECG wrist wearable can record a single-lead ECG, off the user’s wrist and makes diagnosis readily available to the masses. Also, users can book an online consultation with a cardiac specialist for a nominal fee. The consultant can help analyse the ECG report along with the lifestyle data, to recommend changes.

The band also has a feature to detect serious heart conditions like Atrial Fibrillation. This has been made possible due to Tricog Health’s deep learning-based Arrhythmia detection algorithm -DeepRhythm™. It will provide GOQii’s users with accurate interpretation of their single-lead ECG. DeepRhythm is Tricog’s proprietary algorithm* (FDA pending) that has been developed with over three years of research, using 30 million traces of ECG recordings to detect several forms of Arrhythmias. The GOQii Vital ECG is only a screening device and not a medical-grade device.

Nutritional Deficiencies That Can Cause Hair Loss

hair loss

Hair is a tough protein made of keratin. The hair bulbs at the base of the hair follicle divide and grow to build the hair shaft. Blood vessels nourish the hair bulb and deliver the hormones that modify hair growth. Hair grows at different rates in different people. Hair loss also happens at different rates in different people for different reasons like heredity, hormonal changes like hypothyroidism, medical condition or side effects of medicines, ageing or even stress. We do shed around 50-200 hair every day and it is perfectly normal. Also, in some situations like post pregnancy in women, when there is more than normal hair loss due to sudden imbalance of calorie intake, which usually gets resolved by itself. Whatever the reason for hair fall, these two small words can be a nightmare for many. Let’s understand what nutritional deficiencies can lead to hair loss!

Which Nutritional Deficiencies Can Cause Hair Loss?

  1. Vitamin D Deficiency: Vitamin D is very important for hair growth as it stimulates hair follicles and also helps in maintaining thickness of each hair strand. Low levels of vitamin D in the body may cause thinning of hair or slow hair growth. Keratinocytes in skin metabolise vitamin D to keratin – a protein found in hair, skin and nails. Low levels of vitamin D make it difficult for the keratinocytes in hair follicles to regulate hair growth and its shedding. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with higher stress levels which support hair fall. Getting 400-800 IU of vitamin D a day is very important. This can be easily achieved with 10-30 minutes of sun exposure.
  2. Vitamin B7 or Biotin Deficiency: Though biotin deficiency is very rare in people (as biotin is found easily in foods like banana, carrot, egg yolks, legumes, nuts, etc.), it can occur by heredity or in people who consume excessive amounts of alcohol, smoke excessively, people with inflammatory bowel disease or in people who have raw egg whites which contain avidin that blocks absorption of biotin.
  3. Iron Deficiency: When one has iron deficiency, the circulation of haemoglobin is less –  which means less oxygen uptake by the body and slower growth and repair of cells, including cells that stimulate hair growth. When there is less circulating oxygen in the body, the available supply is channelized to vital organs to keep them alive rather than to hair follicles. Without oxygen, hair follicles cease to function properly and eventually fall out. Including foods like whole wheat grains, beans, chickpea, tofu, peas, nuts, raisins, spinach and chicken ensures that you have good iron stores in the body. When you notice more than usual hair in your shower drain or hair brush, it is time to get your haemoglobin levels tested.
  4. Vitamin C: While vitamin C deficiency is rare as it is easily available in many food items, the common risk factors include poor diet, alcoholism, anorexia, smoking and chronic illness. Vitamin C plays a vital role in the absorption of iron from the intestines which leads to weakness and hair loss. Having citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime, lemon, strawberry, guava and other foods like sweet potato, chillies, thyme, kale and broccoli on a regular basis, ensures your vitamin levels are maintained on a higher side
  5. Vitamin E: with its antioxidant properties helps in reducing oxidative stress on the scalp and reduces free radical damage and protects hair cells. Vitamin E helps improve scalp health and hair health. It creates a protective layer on the hair follicles and locks in moisture making it shiny and easy to manage. Vitamin E supports a healthy scalp by protecting the lipid layer and reducing dryness and scaling of the scalp. Food sources of vitamin E include nuts and seeds like almonds and walnuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, wheat germ oil, peanuts, avocado, mango and spinach.

Tips To Reduce Hair Fall

  • Eat well balanced meals containing protein, complex carbs and healthy fats
  • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to aid the digestion and absorption of nutrients from your diet
  • Include healthy snacks in between meals to maintain energy levels
  • Include foods like whole grain cereals, eggs, nuts, leafy vegetables, tofu, legumes, quinoa, beans, avocado, dairy, orange and lime to get all the essential nutrients to support healthy tresses
  • Get good exposure to sunlight so that you maintain your vitamin D levels, if not do supplement it regularly
  • Maintain scalp and hair hygiene by using a mild shampoo at least 2 times a week
  • Keep stress levels within normal limits
  • Get good quality sleep and exercise at least 4-5 days a week

We hope this article on nutritional deficiencies that can cause hair loss helps you! For more on hair loss and hair care, check out Healthy Reads or tune in to LIVE sessions by experts on GOQii Play.

Chandan Tiwari Makes A Positive Lifestyle Shift!

chandan tiwari

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns and as you age those twists and turns keep getting narrower. But as long as you are determined to pull through, nothing can stop you. And sometimes all you need is a helping hand. The story of our player Chandan Tiwari is one such example.

Life Before GOQii

Now 28 years of age, Chandan Tiwari used to be quite active in sports during his youth. He represented his school and college in cricket. He was lean, fit and weighed 74kg. However, once he began working in 2016, his life got caught up in the twists and turns of a working individual and he found himself working for 14-15 hours a day backed by lack of sleep, unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity. In 3 years, he gained 22kg and also suffered bouts of depression with his confidence being at an all time low. He says he is not sure whether depression led to all the unhealthy eating and weight gain or was it the other way round. He faced frequent health issues like cold and fever, stomach issues and skin allergy. He was diagnosed with fatty liver too during one of the medical tests conducted in 2018.

Enter GOQii

Chandan was introduced to GOQii by his brother who is also an active user and had undergone a transformation due to lifestyle changes introduced by the coach. He joined GOQii in August 2019 and his life took another turn – this time for the better.

The first thing his GOQii Coach did was explain the importance of a slow and consistent approach to fat loss rather than changing his lifestyle completely. So he started slowly. The changes introduced by his coach included:

  • No outside food on weekdays
  • Lemon water early in the morning on an empty stomach’
  • ACV before lunch
  • 30 min of walking everyday
  • Reduce consumption of sweets

Later, his GOQii Coach also introduced habits such as:

  • Focusing on eating and chewing food slowly as he was used to finishing his meals quickly
  • Eating fruits and raw vegetables
  • Less oil in cooking and more boiled food
  • Start with a run for 1 or 2 km and then slowly increase it to 5 km

Chandan Tiwari Takes The Positive Turn!

In 2 months flat, Chandan was able to lose 10kg. This motivated him to be more dedicated. He says it was initially difficult to abstain from his normal eating habits as all the sweet cravings were hard to control but he pulled through. He proudly says he has not touched sweets in the last 5 months.

The other changes he experienced include:

  • 2-3 days of run and 3-4 days of bodyweight exercises at home by following YouTube or GOQii Play Coaches. The bodyweight training has helped him achieve lean muscle.
  • He participated in a 10k run last year and now wants to do a 21 km marathon.
  • His sleep has improved as he avoids late night TV or his phone. Goes to bed at 11PM as compared to 2-3AM before.
  • Has incorporated meditation and breathing exercises to his routine which keep him calm although work pressure has not reduced, he is able to manage his work and prioritize fitness.

Thanks to all these changes, he now weighs 74.5kg. His fatty liver condition is completely cured. His thyroid is under control although he is still on medication. Right now, he feels more positive, confident and energetic even after 11 hours of work. Apart from interacting with his coach on a regular basis, he has been regularly buying products from the GOQii Health Store.

In his words, he was almost obsessed with his transformation and wanted to get back in shape at any cost. He said, “It’s not just the physical transformation but my mental transformation which I am happy about. I now feel totally in control of myself and stronger to handle everything.” His family is overwhelmed with his transformation and wish to thank GOQii for their support and help.

5 Healthy Winter Vegetables For A Healthier You!

healthy winter vegetables

The chilly winters are here. This season brings us the most colorful fruits and vegetables in the market. All of them are rich in a variety of nutrients and flavors. The major reason for increasing our intake of this fresh produce is to build our immunity against the flu and cold viruses as well as stock our body with enough nutrients to last a few months post winter as well! Here’s my list of the 5 must have healthy winter vegetables!

Must Have Healthy Winter Vegetables

1. Mustard Greens
The famous ‘sarson ka saag’ is our go-to-immunity winter dish. Ever thought why? This low calorie, high fiber leafy green is also an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, E, K, folic acid and minerals like calcium, carotenes, manganese, copper, magnesium, protein, potassium, and iron. This wide variety of Vitamins and Minerals perform many essential functions like blood clotting which makes it heart healthy, improving bone health and thus, reducing the risk of arthritis and osteoporosis. It also improves eyesight. The folic acid content is at par with levels needed for a healthy pregnancy and menopause. Last but not the least, the high fiber aids good bowel movements, easing hemorrhoids and constipation. Some other leafy greens like spinach and methi are also at their best in this season.

2. Carrots
This crunchy powerfood, especially the red variety available during winter, contains a good amount of vitamins and nutrients such as vitamin A, B2, B3, C, D, E and K. We all know about it’s benefits for a good eyesight and healthy skin because of it’s beta carotene. Little do we know that it contains high amounts of Lycopene, an antioxidant which helps prevent cancer, diabetes and heart diseases. Eating raw carrots or drinking carrot juice can help regularise blood flow, provide relief from pain and make you feel less fatigued during menstruation days owing to the carotene and iron content – making it a must have healthy winter vegetable.

3. White Radish
Do you enjoy relishing hot Mooli ke Parathe in winter? Then you’re definitely benefitting from the vitamins A, B6, C & E and minerals like potassium, phosphorus and zinc present in White Radish. This entire range of Vitamins and minerals gives our whole body an immunity boost. It has shown to have anti-congestive properties, which clear mucus from the throat and respiratory tract due to the common cold and cough in this season. The combination of phosphorus and zinc, helps get rid of dryness, acne and rashes on the skin and the high water content of radish keeps you well hydrated. Don’t forget to use the green leaves of this root vegetable to perk up the health benefits!

4. Beetroot
This vibrant and colorful veggie contains essential nutrients like folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C.  Plus, they’re one of the most delicious, healthy winter vegetables out there! The red color which indicates the high iron content which helps in improving the total blood count and the Vit.C boosts immunity and improves our WBC’s.

Very importantly, Betaine present in beets can protect the liver from inflammation and damage caused by toxins and chronic alcohol consumption. It helps break down fatty acids in the liver and may help in treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. To add to it, they’re completely safe for consumption by diabetics as well! Puzzled? Well, yes. The Glycemic Index of beets is of medium range (61) but the glycemic load they provide is only 5. Which means although they release blood sugar levels slightly fast after consumption, the total carbs present in them are comparatively very low.

5. Sweet Potato
Winter comes and you get to see hand carts on the streets filled with this excellent and inexpensive food item. These orange-hued delights are loaded with twice the fiber when compared to other types of potatoes. B6 content in it reduces homocysteine which has been linked to heart attacks. Vit.C and antioxidants protect us from flu viruses and common colds. They also aid in the formation of blood cells. Sweet potatoes contain a good amount of Magnesium, essential for blood pressure regulation and nerve relaxation which in turn helps reduce stress. Plus, since they’re fairly low on the glycemic index, they’re beneficial for diabetics and also great for filling up without getting weighed down.

We hope these healthy winter vegetables help you level up your health and build immunity during this season! For more on nutrition and winter, check out Healthy Reads or tune in to LIVE sessions by experts on GOQii Play.
