The Art Of Reducing Medication & Getting Healthy With GOQii

Hema Sangani - Reducing medication

If you speak to anyone who has lost weight the right way and maintains their health, you’ll begin to understand that it is an art that requires patience, dedication and consistency. Without these, your health will spiral downwards. Our Player Hema Sangani realised this as she took the decision to get healthy with GOQii. Here’s how Hema Sangani painted her Health Story.

Lifestyle and Women’s Health Issues

A dentist by profession and an artist by passion, Hema Sangani is 52 years old and resides in Bhavnagar. As a dentist, her routine can be quite hectic and over the course of time, long working hours left her with no time for physical activity.

She also drank copious amounts of tea on a daily basis and that, coupled with some other habits led to her developing medical issues which included acidity, hypothyroid and women’s health issues. At the age of 44, due to an Ovary Cyst, she had to undergo hysterectomy to avoid malignancy.

She also gained a lot of weight and weighed around 75kg with lots of fat around her tummy and thighs. With all these issues, her only option was medication. She was on medication for Thyroid and Acidity – taking as many as two antacids a day.

Her husband was aware of the issues faced by Hema and figured that there might be a better way to maintain good health and manage the condition without popping pills. After a fair amount of research, he came across GOQii and gifted it to her.

Making Lifestyle Changes & Reducing Medication

Upon joining GOQii, Hema Sangani’s 3 primary goals were to:

  • Reduce weight
  • Reduce acidity levels and the antacid medication
  • Control thyroid medication

She was assigned to Coach Parul Massey who understood Hema’s needs and worked out a plan to achieve her goals slowly. “We started this journey by setting the goal of reducing acidity by including buttermilk in meals and reducing the quantity of tea consumed during the day,” says Coach Parul. Slowly, Hema reduced her dependence on tea.

Along with some changes in nutrition and diet, Hema also got motivated to join GOQii PRO classes within the GOQii App. She began joining these live sessions by experts for basic workouts in the morning. The one-on-one guidance during these sessions helped her get more active than before. She also began meditation to reduce stress levels. Now, she regularly attends GOQii PRO classes in the morning.

To know how Hema Sangani painted her Health Story, get the complete picture by watching this episode of GOQii Health Stories where she speaks to our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal:

What Changes Did Hema Sangani Experience?

After making several lifestyle changes by eating right, on time, exercising regularly and meditating, Hema Sangani was able to reduce her medications. After 3 months of joining GOQii, her acidity medication reduced to one tablet and she reduced the medication for her thyroid issue as well. She also witnessed an inch loss.

“I love GOQii and I keep telling my husband that It’s one of the best gifts that he has given me till date,” says Hema. She has been a GOQii Elite Player for about 204 days till 17th October, 2022.

Cardiac Diet: Foods To Eat, Avoid & Other Tips

Cardiac Diet: Foods To Eat, Avoid & Other Tips

Whether you want to lose weight, manage cardiovascular issues or simply avoid any health complications, a healthy, clean eating pattern can help you move towards it. Understanding what foods are good or bad and taking small steps to include or avoid different foods can be game changer. While eating habits are formed slowly and changing them can be overwhelming, here’s your guide to a Cardiac Diet which includes foods and eating habits that can help you maintain a healthy heart.

The Cardiac Diet – Foods & Habits For A Healthy Heart

  1. Control portions: Eyeballing your food to check the estimated calories is the easiest way to avoid overeating and over consumption. Even healthy foods like nuts, when taken in excess, are harmful! Always choose low calorie and high fiber foods to fill yourself like raw fruits and vegetables. Take smaller portions of calorie dense and high salt foods for a healthy heart. Another tip is to choose a smaller plate when eating.
  2. Choose raw vegetables: Having at least 3-4 servings of fresh and local vegetables is very essential to get a good supply of heart healthy antioxidants. Choose bright coloured vegetables to get maximum benefit. Fiber, which is present in vegetables, helps in controlling high BP, fat deposition in arteries and also eases digestion.
  3. Include whole grains, millets: Grains are naturally high in fiber and nutrients. Avoid refined and processed cereals like all-purpose flour, breads and bakery products. Instead, choose locally available native millets like barley, ragi, bajra, quinoa, and farro.
  4. Consume salt mindfully: Having too much salt can worsen cardiac health and cause hypertension. Adding no table salt and reducing salt while you cook is the first step. Reducing hidden salt from foods like cornflakes, muesli, breads, biscuits, sauces, and pickles is the next step. Choose less refined salts like Rock salt or Himalayan salt. Be wary if you have thyroid, as you might need regular iodized salt. Flavor your dishes using dill, coriander, mint, lemon, and oregano instead!
  5. Choose low-fat high protein sources: Avoid animal products that are high in fat such as full fat milk, cheese, etc. Go for low fat/toned milk, choose leaner cuts, fish, and eggs to meet your protein requirement. Certain types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can lower blood fats called triglycerides. Products like soya granules, sprouts, powdered pulses are good, low-fat sources of protein and contain no cholesterol. They can be easily added to the diet to increase protein intake.
  6. Control the intake of nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds when consumed in moderation are extremely beneficial. Nuts and seeds like walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, chia seeds, sabja seeds, sunflower seeds, and flax seeds are rich in heart healthy fats known as omega 3 fatty acids. These help in increasing the good cholesterol component essential for limiting inflammation in heart patients. However, excess of these nuts and seeds can also lead to increased fat intake which is not ideal.
  7. Engage in cardio activities: As the name suggests, any type of physical activity which affects the heart activity is considered good for cardiovascular health. If you cannot go to the gym, ensure that you at least go for a walk. A quick 30-minute fast walk can help you get good cardio activity to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure and improve energy levels. It can also help you fight weight gain to improve overall cardiac health. If you are still unable to find time for dedicated exercise, make it a habit to walk for 10 minutes post every meal. Finding small pockets of time for cardiovascular fitness in the form of walking can be really helpful. Choose any activity like jogging, running, cycling, swimming, Zumba, or aerobics, etc.
  8. Say no to smoking and alcohol: Limit your alcohol intake. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. The chemicals you inhale when you smoke, damage your heart and blood vessels.

A mild indulgence should not hamper your heart healthy journey, so an occasional favorite meal or a piece of cookie won’t harm you. However, balancing your choices and changing your eating habits in the long run is the key to better heart health.

We hope this Cardiac Diet and the subsequent tips help you make a positive lifestyle change. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Achal Agarwal Loses 37kg, Reverses Lifestyle Diseases & Gets Healthier With GOQii

Achal AgarwalWhen we think of weight loss, the first thing that comes to mind is to eat less and exercise. Theoretically, this is the right way to go about it. But, this is not as easy as it sounds. It requires a great level of determination and willpower. However, once the decision to succeed is made, you will achieve your goal. Roadblocks in fitness and health can come in many ways – excuses, laziness, busy etc. Today, we bring to you one such story of determination and will power from our player Achal Agarwal.

Life Before GOQii

Achal Agarwal, 42, based in Noida, handles operations for a large German MNC in India as its COO. Before joining GOQii, he was overweight, weighing around 121 kg. Due to being overweight, he had developed medical conditions such as Diabetes, High Lipids (Cholesterol), Stomach Problems (Acidity, constipation) and Fatty liver. His waist was 44 inches.

“I had all sorts of issues. I was totally ignoring my health. I was doing nothing. Stress levels were high and I needed my drink daily,” says Achal. After having severe palpitations and the scare of COVID-19, he decided that he had to take care of his own health.

Joining GOQii & Making A Lifestyle Change

After he bought the GOQii Balance, a smart weight scale, he found a coupon code and downloaded the GOQii App. When he explored the app, he found various health services. He came across the personalized coaching service, and took it up.

He says that the Coach’s knowledge helped him bring about necessary changes in his diet and exercise. He says that, “The Coach has been very motivating and she has been there all along trying to find out if I am doing well. GOQii has been very helpful and I think a health coach is more than enough for one to follow and get better.”

The changes brought about by Achal Agarwal’s coach included:

  • Basic walk to complete 6k steps a day (later he began completing 15k steps daily)
  • Increased water intake and cutting down on tea intake
  • Avoid maida and processed foods
  • Having multigrain roti
  • Increasing fruit, vegetable and protein intake
  • Stopping sugar and alcohol completely
  • Practicing Pranayama to reduce stress

Achal says that his best stress buster now is walking – he loves it! He even conducts his meetings at work on walks, completing 20k steps on a daily basis. He further adds that, “The journey has not been easy but it’s been fun.” He further adds that his coach has been extremely understanding and has worked out everything around his schedule. He used to do stringent workouts and the coach introduced pre and post workout meals and that helped. His GOQii Coach has been regularly advising him on dietary changes. What Achal likes the best about coaching is that it is non-intrusive.

Thanks to all the lifestyle modifications suggested by his GOQii Coach, in the last 10 months, he lost close to 37kg. His Current weight is 83.2kg and his waist size has reduced by 7 inches. His HbA1c reduced from 7.9% to 5.1%. His Cholesterol levels lowered as well as his fasting sugar.

Achal Agarwal has now become a health mentor to a lot of his colleagues. He has been sharing tips with his employees and co-workers and many of whom have managed to get on a healthier path. A fine example of this can be seen in Sushma Mishra who has been able to lose 8kg in the last couple of months. She says, “I never expected I could also get healthy, do exercises and lose weight. But, with the small tips that Achal Sir gave, I followed them and it’s helping me. He is such an inspiration and a role model to all of us”.  He has also been recommending people to download the GOQii app and use it.

To know more about his journey, check out this session of GOQii Health Talks where he spoke to our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal about his changes, challenges and more!

What Does His Coach Have To Say About Achal Aggarwal?

Achal Agarwal is one such player who is very disciplined, dedicated, and maintains consistency with any habits that were suggested by me. He was always very sincere from the beginning and never missed his daily workout and healthy diet. The player came on board in Nov 2020 with medical conditions like Diabetes, High Lipids (Cholesterol), uric acid, high CRP levels, stomach problems (Acidity, constipation) and Fatty liver.

We slowly introduced small changes as mentioned above. In the last 10 months Achal’s progress has been tremendous! Apart from weight loss and his vitals returning to normal, Achal says that his complete change of mindset towards health and fitness have been amazing!

Losing 14kg In 13 Months – How Reshmi Sujesh Wrote Her Healthy Story!

Reshmi Sujesh

Have you tried shedding off extra weight but haven’t been successful? Do you feel that no amount of exercise or diet plans can help you? When it comes to weight loss, there’s always more than one or two factors involved. Our Player Reshmi Sujesh was in a similar predicament where she couldn’t lose weight, till she opted for GOQii’s personalized health coaching.

Life Before GOQii

Reshmi Sujesh is a 43 year old working professional based in Bengaluru. She had first joined GOQii in 2017 and had tried the personalized health coaching service for 3 months but chose to discontinue as she found it too intrusive.

2 years later, she got extremely busy with her professional life and had gained a considerable amount of weight. She did try walking regularly along with exercise but she struggled to lose weight.

In November 2020, she received a parcel that came for her husband. The parcel contained a GOQii tracker along with the GOQii Balance Body Composition Monitor. When she weighed herself, she was horrified at the number displayed on the screen. She weighed around 84.5kg. That was her wake up call and she decided to get healthy!

Making Lifestyle Changes

She informed her husband that she was taking the GOQii tracker and she began her health journey. This time, she opted for personalized health coaching and set her goal to weight loss. Her BMI at this point was around 31.

After speaking to her GOQii Coach, she slowly began dietary changes which included drinking overnight soaked methi dana water on an empty stomach in the morning. Methi dana or Fenugreek promotes weight loss by burning stubborn fat from the belly and adipose tissues. Fenugreek is filled with fiber and antioxidants, and as a result, it also flushes out harmful toxins.

She initially began walking 5k steps daily and gradually moved to 7k and 10k. Over time, more dietary changes were included. She was persistent and tried her best to follow all the habits set by her GOQii Coach. She also kept track of her diet by logging in her food and water intake in the GOQii App.

Her current routine includes 30 minutes of walking. Her step counts now touch an average of 12k steps per day. She also performs 15 minutes of Surya Namaskar along with core exercises. Thanks to all these lifestyle changes, she was able to lose 14kg in 13 months.

She recently spoke to our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal about her Health Story and how hard she worked to lose weight in a healthy way. You can watch the entire episode of GOQii Health Stories feat. Reshmi Sujesh here –

What Does Coach Ankita Baheti Have To Say About Reshmi Sujesh’s Transformation?

“My player Reshmi Sujesh stands tall at 154 cm, weighs 70kg and is 43 years old. Her current BMI IS 29.9. She was transferred to me from another GOQii Coach. When I started coaching her in July, she weighed 74.70kg & her BMI was 31.5.

Her health goals were weight management, improving strength and eating healthy. She is persistent and tries her best to follow all the habits daily and also provides updates for the food logs. It was very challenging for her to reduce weight due to her sedentary lifestyle and medical conditions. But, thanks to her dedication and regularity towards her health goals, she achieved what she aimed for!”

It’s never easy when you have to achieve a health goal. There are lots of sacrifices you need to make. But if you are determined and persistent, then success is not far away. Reshmi Sujesh exemplifies this fact. Her current health goal is to reduce another 10kg.
