Interesting facts about Salt you should know

SaltWe all know that salt is an essential ingredient in our food. It’s hard to imagine a meal without it! But what exactly is salt, and why is it so important? While most of us are familiar with table salt, there are some fascinating facts about salt that you might not know. Let’s dive into the world of salt and uncover its role in our lives.

What is Salt?

Salt is made from sodium, a naturally occurring mineral, and is a major ingredient used worldwide. Most of the sodium we consume is in the form of sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt. But salt is more than just a seasoning—it plays a vital role in our health and daily lives.

Interesting facts about Salt

  1. Widely used Additive
    • Salt is one of the first food additives and seasonings used by humans. Today, it’s one of the most widely used additives, second only to sugar in the amount added to food.
  2. Too much salt is harmful
    • While salt is necessary for human life, over consumption can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, hypertension, and heart disease. On the other hand, consuming too little salt can cause hypotension.
    • High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. However, sodium intake alone isn’t the sole cause—factors like family history, weight, race, physical fitness, and smoking also play a role.
  3. How Much Salt Should You Consume?
    • Under normal conditions, a person needs about 2500 milligrams of sodium daily, which is roughly half a teaspoon of salt.
  4. Replenishing Salt
    • During conditions like excessive sweating (from workouts, sports, or trekking), diarrhea, or vomiting, sodium is lost, and the body’s need for it increases. This increased need can usually be met through diet, as the average diet already contains more sodium than required.

Sources of Sodium

  1. Table salt and seasoning:
    • Sodium is often added to foods during preparation in the form of table salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sea salt, black salt, or rock salt. One level teaspoon of salt contains about 2000 milligrams of sodium.
  2. Processed foods:
    • Salt and sodium-containing additives are commonly found in processed foods like chips, salted nuts, pickles, sauces, and ketchup. These additives also help preserve food.
  3. Natural sources:
    • All animal-based foods naturally contain sodium. Most fresh fruits and vegetables also have small amounts of sodium.
  4. Medicines:
    • Some over-the-counter drugs and medications contain sodium, so it’s important to check labels if you’re monitoring your sodium intake.

The Role of Salt in Health

Experts believe that while cutting down on salt may not prevent high blood pressure, it can help lower blood pressure for people who are “salt-sensitive.” A low-salt diet, combined with weight loss, medication, or other lifestyle changes, can effectively control high blood pressure.

Salt is a tasty and essential ingredient in our daily cooking, but moderation is key. Use it wisely to stay healthy. For instance, switching to rock salt can help keep blood pressure in check.

We hope this article equips you with valuable insights into the role of salt in your life. If you found this information helpful, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Tips To Alleviate & Avoid Back Pain

avoid back painBack pain usually originates from the joints, bones, nerves or muscles. It is one of the most common complaints. Back pain may be felt as mild chronic pain going on for years or just for a few seconds or minutes. It can be felt as continuous dull ache, appearing at intervals as well. Constant, sharp pain is usually found in one place or it radiates to other areas like limbs. It can also present a weak, tingling sensation or numbness.

Few Facts About Back Pain

  • The spine consists of bones, joints, spinal cord, nerves, tendons, ligaments and muscles. Back pain can originate from any of these or overlying muscles
  • In a majority of cases, back pain is self-limited. Most common back pain symptoms are due to inflammation or trauma which may be mild or severe
  • The two most common conditions that cause back pain are degenerative spinal disc disease and spinal disc herniation
  • Innocent causes of the back pain include ligament tear, muscle strain, ruptured or herniated spinal disks, and irritated joints. Environmental factors that cause or aggravate back pain include arthritis, posture at work, obesity, psychological and physical stress.
  • Some other causes include – lack of core strength that creates too much strain on the back, tight muscles which cause inflammation and tight hip flexors as they extend towards the lower back via the pelvic girdle due to improper posture.

Causes and Tips To Avoid Back Pain

  • Obesity: is a common cause of back pain. As a heavy body contributes to increased pressure on the spine, maintaining a healthy body weight can help reduce your back pain. If you’re seriously overweight, those extra pounds could be straining your spine. Lose some weight and you just might lose the pain. A weight-loss program that includes regular exercise is bound to make your whole body feel better. A nutritious diet, lifestyle modifications and healthy weight can prevent back pain.
  • Poor posture: is a common cause of back pain. Maintain correct postures while standing, sitting and while lifting things. While using a computer or laptop, try to take breaks frequently and practice stretches which will lower your chances of getting back pain. Take regular short breaks in between work. Just getting up from your chair can help break the cycle of clenched muscles.

Tips To Reduce The Pain

  • Applying a cold compress to the affected area can numb the pain temporarily by desensitizing the underlying nerves.
  • Heat application through a heating pad, warm bath or hot water bottle can stimulate blood circulation in the area and loosen the tight muscles.
  • Massage therapy could provide short-term relief from acute and chronic back pain.
  • Frequent massages may be costly, but getting a massage once a month can be effective and affordable as well. It is important to select the massage best suited to your problem.
  • Consume a healthy diet consisting of Vitamin D as deficiency and insufficiency can cause or worsen back pain. The correction of it plays an important role in the treatment of chronic back pain. Foods like Fatty fish, liver, egg yolk and mushrooms can improve Vitamin D levels.
  • Avoid high-inflammatory foods such as sugars, trans fats and processed foods to prevent back pain.
  • Train with proper form, regular rehab-strengthening of lower back with exercise such as back extension, superman holds can help strengthen rhomboids to improve posture.
  • Stretching itself can damage muscle fibers as you’re just tearing them by stretching them instead of contracting them. If you want to stop feeling sore, aggressive stretching is the last thing you’d want to do.

Quick Fix: A foam roller can help in releasing tight muscles. You may look a little weird if you’re the only person in your gym who doesn’t stretch before exercise and prefers to foam roll a sore muscle rather than stretch it out, but your muscles will thank you for it!

We hope this article helps you alleviate and avoid back pain. If any of the tips above helped you, do share your experience in the comments below! What Is Psoriasis and How Can You Manage It?

PsoriasisPsoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterized by red patches covered with white scales. The disease most commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, scalp, feet, and lumbosacral areas. It is a long-term autoimmune condition that accelerates the growth cycle of skin cells and causes inflammation due to immune system dysfunction.

Psoriasis tends to worsen during cold and dry seasons. While the exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood, it is believed to result from various factors such as infections, obesity, certain medications, stress, alcohol abuse, endocrine disorders, severe sunburn, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Most Common Symptoms

  • Dry or cracked skin that may bleed or itch
  • Small scaling spots, most commonly seen in children
  • Itching, burning, dryness or soreness
  • Thickened or pitted nails
  • Swollen or stiff joints
  • Crack on the soles of the feet
  • Recent changes in your life, such as illness or increased stress.

How Can You Manage It?

Here are some effective tips to help you manage Psoriasis.

  1. Limit Shower Time: Prolonged showers can increase moisture loss from the skin, making it irritated and dry, which should be avoided, especially in the case of psoriasis.
  2. Apply a Cool Compress: A cold compress, such as an ice or gel pack, can provide relief from itching associated with psoriasis.
  3. Salt Water Bath: Soaking in a saltwater bath helps soften scales and may ease inflammation and irritation. Add half a cup of Dead Sea salt to bathwater and soak for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight increases inflammation in the body. Regular exercise and a low-calorie diet can help. Include cardio, strength training, and stair climbing in your routine to reduce the risk of inflammation.
  5. Exposure to Sunlight: A deficiency in vitamin D can aggravate psoriasis. Moderate exposure to sunlight can help improve symptoms.
  6. Have Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Thanks to its antiseptic properties, ACV may help alleviate itching or irritation, especially on the scalp. Mix 2 parts water with 1 part ACV, apply to the scalp, let it stay for 10 minutes, and rinse off with shampoo.
  7. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated keeps your skin healthy and reduces the number and severity of flare-ups.
  8. Add Olive Oil in the Bath: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, olive oil helps soothe irritated skin. Add 2 teaspoons to your bathwater or apply a small amount directly to the affected area.
  9. Apply Raw Glycerin to Affected Areas: Psoriasis often leads to dry, scaly skin. Applying raw glycerin hydrates the skin and alleviates symptoms. The best time to apply is before bedtime.
  10. Manage Stress: Stress can trigger and worsen psoriasis. Practice deep breathing, yoga, meditation, or engage in hobbies to stay stress-free.
  11. Good Quality Sleep: Poor sleep worsens psoriasis symptoms by increasing stress levels. Ensure you get enough quality sleep to allow your body to rejuvenate and repair itself.

We hope these easy and effective tips help you manage psoriasis. If the issue persists or gets worse, seek out a medical professional or consult a GOQii Doctor by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.
