Navigating the Maze of Nutrition: Finding Clarity Amidst Confusion

In today’s information-rich age, the quest for sound nutrition advice can feel like a labyrinthine journey. We are bombarded daily with a deluge of dietary information, often contradictory and bewildering. The result? Nutrition confusion can leave us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what to put on our plates. Nutrition misinformation can be harmful to our health and wallet.

Misinformation is the bane of the modern era, and nutrition is no exception. Social media, fad diets, and anecdotal success stories often drown out evidence-based advice. What’s even more concerning is that these sources can promote diets that may not only be ineffective but potentially harmful. This confusion can lead to poor dietary choices, contributing to health problems like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Question everything. Just because something is trending on social media or endorsed by a celebrity doesn’t make it valid. Look for claims backed by well-designed studies. Be cautious of quick fixes and miraculous results. Sound nutrition is about long-term habits, not magic solutions.

Also, remember that one size does not fit all. Nutrition should be personalised to your individual needs, goals, and preferences. Seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional who can tailor advice to your unique circumstances.

Empower yourself with knowledge. Learn to interpret food labels, understand macronutrients, and recognise hidden sugars and unhealthy fats. A basic understanding of nutrition principles can help you make informed choices. A balanced diet remains at the core of good nutrition. Moderation is key, and no single food should be demonised or idolised.

So, how do we cut through the noise and find reliable nutrition guidance? When evaluating nutrition advice, consider the source. Registered dietitians, certified nutritionists, and reputable health organisations like the WHO and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are trusted sources.

Look out for the following to make well-informed nutrition choices:

  1. Source of information – check whether the website or article is certified/verified.
  2. Do look for the relevant degree of the author – if there is no listed author (unless it is on a site that is a government or university site), the information may not be trusted. If the author is mentioned, verify that he or she holds the relevant degree to post it.
  3. Motive of the site/person – check if the motive is to sell a product or service and not to provide information.
  4. Information Validation – the information on the website should be backed by research and statistics and not just based on testimonials and personal information.
  5. How personalised is the guidance or is it generic using some buzzwords – Each individual body is unique. A blanket nutritional advice for everyone is often not authentic. If the website or author is just giving out buzzwords, the advice is mostly generic and not best suited to your health conditions and body.
  6. Watch out for key ingredients/hidden ingredients/nutrition facts on the labels of the products. Definitely dig for the small print while buying products from websites or through influencers.
  7. In the case of a website article – sources of information should be mentioned – reliable sites/books/opinions of doctors or registered dietitians.
  8. Does it promote a fad diet or a quick fix for your health issue? – If any article or website is making unrealistic promises based on products, seek the advice of a professional before using it.
  9. Watch out for Influencers with no nutrition background, selling products – this is increasingly common these days.

  1. Books by registered dieticians (RD) or practising nutritionists/doctors.
  2. Some reliable websites:
    • National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements
    • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
    • World Health Organisation (WHO)
    • ICMR – National Institute of Nutrition
    • WebMD

Nutritional misinformation leads to wrong dietary patterns, taking up fad diets/quick diets detrimental to health, buying products that have harmful side effects, and following diet patterns that cause toxicity/deficiency of nutrients – all of these have long-term health effects and aggravation of the health issue.

To make well-informed decisions:

  1. Take advice from certified professionals.
  2. Look out for personalised advice based on your medical history and body stats.
  3. A diet or fitness pattern that is lifestyle change-based and not merely product-based.
  4. Lastly remember: Dr Google is not always reliable.

To conclude, in an era of rampant nutrition confusion and misinformation, it’s crucial to rely on evidence-based advice from trusted sources. By cultivating a critical mindset, personalising your approach, and staying informed, you can navigate the maze of nutrition and make choices that promote your long-term health and well-being.

Breaking Myths, Building Confidence: GLP-1 Myths Busted

Conversations around GLP-1 medications often carry a mix of excitement and doubt. For some, they feel like a breakthrough. For others, they spark suspicion. We’ve heard it all. It’s just a shortcut, you’ll be hooked forever, the side effects will ruin you. The problem is, when myths spread faster than facts, people are left either scared to try or ashamed if they do. And that’s unfair.

Here’s the thing: GLP-1 isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about giving your body a chance to reset and you a chance to succeed. So let’s tackle the most common fears head-on.

Myth 1: GLP-1 is a “shortcut” for weight loss

It isn’t. A shortcut means skipping the path altogether. GLP-1 is more like a walking stick on a steep climb. It supports you, steadies you, and makes the journey possible, but you’re still doing the climbing. The food choices, the movement, the discipline… those remain yours.

Myth 2: Once you start, you’re stuck for life

Why Fake Health News is Dangerous For Your Mind and Body!

“Eating 30 mangoes a day can cure diabetes”

“Eating 1 tsp of Methi Seeds every day for 30 days can cure diabetes”

These were some of the claims made by patients to GOQii’s very own Dr. Akshat Chadha. In fact, we even came across a 2016 article that received around 1.4 million shares on Facebook that was titled, “Dandelion Weed Can Boost Your Immune System and Cure Cancer”.

Now before you begin stuffing yourself with mangoes and Methi Seeds or begin a quest to get a hold of Dandelion Weed, take a step back and analyse these claims.

Dr. Chadha asks a very valid question, “If it is that simple, why is the world suffering from diabetes?”

How Fake Health News Works 

What is the first thing you do when you experience an unusual fever, intense pain in a body part or several of them? You turn to Dr. Google! At some point, we all have typed in “Quick ways to lose weight” or “How to build muscle quickly”.

While this may be out of general curiosity or to find an easier way out, it is certainly not the right thing to do. Most of Google searches related to illnesses end with either cancer or some other godforsaken illness that no one has heard of. Is Google even reliable?

On the other hand, fake health news forwarded via WhatsApp or shared on Facebook are mostly prevalent because people are looking for an easier way out. Eating Banana Peels or a spoonful of Methi seems easier to do than to actually eat the right food and exercise.

Even the allure of alternate medication over traditional medication seems intriguing for the simple fact that someone would rather experiment with something as absurd as Dandelion Weed, than go through Chemotherapy for Cancer treatment.

Is the tone of authority that claims – “Cure <insert illness here> instantly”, “100% guaranteed weight loss”, or “Build a 6 pack in 3 days” to be blamed or is it our willingness to click on something like this without asking questions to be blamed? At the end of it, these articles only lead you to a website where someone is trying to sell you something or keep you from buying something else.

Apart from the reasons above, why fake articles get so much traction is simply because they deliver quick and easy to read content and headlines as opposed to research documents which are full of tables and scientific jargon that provide evidence.

More so, there’s this crushing need to believe something we wish were true. If someone who loves sweets were to come across an article that read, “Eating a lot of sweets is good for your health”, wouldn’t you click on it even if the claim isn’t backed by a legitimate study?

The Need to Eliminate Fake Health News 

With more people buying into these fake health news and tips, it becomes difficult for doctors as most of their consultation time goes in myth-busting rather than treatment. If an expert is to reject fake news or tip, the patient is often not convinced.

Fake articles and our willingness to believe in them can do more harm than good. Especially if you go for alternate or self-medication cited from these fake articles which can make your condition worse!

Fortunately, the anti-vaccine brigade hasn’t made its way to India with their disputable content. Thanks to them, Measles made its return in 2016 in the United States. Who knows, if we begin here, we’d be welcoming Polio with open arms.

How to Identify Them

Keep an open mind but not open enough to passively accept any false piece of information which claims to be true. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Check the Source: Always check if the article is backed by proper study. If the giant breakthrough in cancer treatment hasn’t been spoken about by the American Cancer Society or other reputable sources consisting of experts on the subject, it probably isn’t true.
  2. Look for More Sources: Don’t rush to the fields to pick out Dandelion Weeds based on a single article. Always look for more sources, more studies have reached the same conclusion. If you can ask multiple people how you look in your new dress, taking multiple opinions on medication and health shouldn’t be that difficult.
  3. Be Sceptic: If you watched WWE in the 90s, the legendary Stone Cold Steve Austin probably gave the most genuine advice ever – “Don’t Trust Anybody!” If it is too good to be true, it probably is. Just because a “research”, “Study” or “Claim” falls in line with what you’re already doing, doesn’t make it authentic. Awaken your inner sceptic and doubt everything! There is no shortcut to getting healthy and fit.
  4. Talk to Your Doctor: If you tell your doctor or even your nutritionist about eating banana peels to lose weight, we’re sure they’d crack up! Any credible data, analysis or information is useless if not interpreted by an expert. Verify these so-called “facts” with your doctor, nutritionist or expert. The person on the other side of the table didn’t spend years of their life getting a degree in medicine or certification just for show.
  5. Get a Second Opinion: Not convinced with what your doctor, nutritionist or trainer has to say? Get a second opinion. No one is 100% accurate all the time. They are human, they can make errors. It’s best to get a second opinion if you’re not convinced. Just avoid Googling your issue because search engines and social media channels aren’t allotted degrees on healthcare, medicine, nutrition and fitness.
