Fun Ways To Stay Fit At Home

stay fit at homeWhile we’re again in a lockdown due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, what most of us are overlooking is the impact of this period on our health. “Sitting is the new smoking” and quite rightly so! Watch your favorite shows, movie marathons, staying glued to the cellphone can all keep you occupied but can also make you mentally and physically unfit! So here are some simple and fun ways to stay fit at home! You can try these fun workouts with your entire family, including your kids!

6 Fun Ways to Stay Fit at Home

1. Plyometrics at Home
Yes! You read it right; Plyometric Exercise can be fun with all the family members. You can place 6 water bottles in a straight line with a gap of 2 feet between them. Ask all the members to form a line begin the workouts:

  • Do the snake walk without touching the bottles
  • Jump over the bottles
  • Jumping over the bottles again but this time turn to your right and jump and then turn to your left and jump.
  • Jump over the bottles and clap your hands in the air above your shoulders.
  • Come in the plank position such that you are in between two bottles and your body is completely on your toes and palms. Reach till the last bottle.

2. Partner Workouts

  • Both the partners are facing back (touching each other’s back); one partner has a bottle of water and will pass it to the other partner by just turning his waist. At the end of 60 seconds the one who has a bottle of water in their hands is the winner.
  • Both the partners are facing back but this time feet are shoulder distance apart and the box of popcorns will pass by bending the back and the receiving partner too has to bend down to take it.
  • Lie down on the floor such that both the partners are touching each other’s feet sole. Now do cycling 20 times clockwise and anti-clockwise.

3. Hula Hoop
This is favourite among children. Besides just twisting and rotating your waist, you can also do variations like a cross over the loops without touching any body part.

4. Skipping
Skipping is a great way to keep kids and grown-ups happy and engaged. You can do partner skipping, cross skipping and reverse skipping.

5. Dancing
Dancing is also a great form of workout. We live in a land of vast dance forms, so choose your pick from Bangra to Garba to Bollywood! You can have a small dance competition amongst the family members. Encourage the use of props like sticks or chairs which will need more effort.

6. Spell your name
Just spell your name and do these workouts. You can also spell days of the week.

Mental Health Tips To Cope With COVID Anxiety

cope with covid anxiety

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. It’s normal to feel anxious and worried during a national crisis as we don’t know how long it will last and how it will impact our lives. This feeling can be quite stressful and overwhelming. One major reason could be social distancing, although necessary, it can make us feel isolated, lonely and may increase stress. To add to it, the COVID anxiety, wherein we’re in constant fear of contracting the virus. These factors can take a huge toll on our mental health.

This stress can affect our health in different ways:

  • Disturbed sleep
  • Eating a lot or eating very less
  • Excess use of tobacco or pan masala
  • Drinking alcohol more than usual to avoid stress and boredom
  • Feeling loneliness and helpless

Tips To Cope With COVID Anxiety

While there might not be a lot you can do to control the situation, here are a few things you can do to preserve your mental health and cope with COVID anxiety.

  1. Try to control the things which are in your hand, rather than focusing on the things which you can’t control – Do not think about the shortage of oxygen cylinders or medication. Think how you can make yourself more healthy so you don’t need an oxygen cylinder and medication to recover. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and work on improving your sleep.
  2. Structure your day and make time for yourself. It’s important to make time for activities you enjoy. Do what you like most like painting, cooking, playing games or an instrument, and so on.
  3. Make a list of your worries, write it down on a paper and try to write down possible solutions for each worry. It can facilitate problem solving and reduce anxiety.
  4. Limit checking updates on COVID-19 in news and social media as the more your mind focuses on worst case scenarios, the more anxious you will feel.
  5. Try to connect through a video call with your friends and family members who you have not visited for a long time. It will work as a tonic for your mental health.
  6. Practice Mindfulness, which in essence, translates to living in the present moment with acceptance and without judgment
  7. Try breathing in lavender or scented candles. The smell of lavender, sandalwood, orange, jasmine and rose have calming properties and it stimulates the part of the brain which controls our mood.

If COVID anxiety is getting the better of you, seek out professional help. You don’t have to do this alone. If you are experiencing an escalation of anxiety, ask knowledgeable people who can assist you through this difficult time. Most importantly, don’t lose hope. Things always get better with time!

When Should You Get Tested For COVID-19 During The Second Wave?

tested for COVID-19

With the unprecedented number of fatalities reported during the last three weeks and the overall nationwide positivity rate hovering above 20%, an obvious question that comes to the mind is- when should you get tested for Covid-19?

According to the updated advisory issued by ICMR on 04 May 21, the use of RT PCR has been optimised considering the extra load on the testing centres. ICMR has indicated that the total national daily capacity is close to 15 lakh tests which includes tests done in 2506 molecular testing laboratories across the country. Considering the limited number of tests that can be done, the advisory recommends the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) for quick detection, isolation and initiation of treatment for curbing transmission.

This test has a short turn-around time of 15-30 minutes and hence, has a huge advantage of early detection of covid cases and offers an opportunity for quick isolation and treatment, and eventually curb the transmission of the disease.

When Should You Go For A RAT Test?

  1. If you have been a primary contact of a covid positive person, you should isolate yourself for 7 days and go for a RAT (Rapid antigen test) if you have symptoms such as fever with/without cough, headache, sore throat, breathlessness, body pain, recent loss of taste or smell, fatigue and diarrhea.
  2. In case you don’t have any of the above symptoms, but were a primary contact, you should still go for a RAT test immediately. In case the RAT test is positive, the advisory recommends that RT PCR is not to be conducted and the individual is to follow home isolation and treatment. However, in case the RAT is negative for symptomatic patients, then RT PCR is to be conducted.

The advisory has been essentially issued to reduce the load on the testing labs with the following additional conditions:

  • If an individual is tested positive in RAT/RT PCR, the repeat confirmatory test is not to be done.
  • RT PCR test should not be done on discharge from hospital for COVID recovered patients.
  • RT PCR test should not be mandatory for any interstate/ domestic travel for healthy individuals.
  • Interstate travel to be avoided by symptomatic individuals (Covid related or flu like symptoms)
  • Asymptomatic individuals must follow laid down COVID appropriate behaviour.

Hope this article clears your doubts about the recent testing protocol and when to get tested for COVID-19. For more detailed information, you can visit the ICMR website.

Shopping For Essentials? Take These Precautions!

shopping for essentialsWith the second wave of COVID-19 and all of us being home, we must be very vigilant when we step out for those essentials that we need. While it is most advisable to stay home completely, one may need essentials like everyday groceries and medicines for basic sustenance. The first choice is of course to go out, and use online stores if available (although this may also have its own supply chain issues). Many societies are also organizing deliveries to flats or having a vendor come into the society. While these solutions can be used by some, there are certain cases where one has to go out. In these cases, it is important to do what one can to protect oneself. So, what should we do to protect ourselves and others when shopping for essentials?

Precautions While Shopping For Essentials

Make sure you are fully ready and prepared before taking that step out the door.

  • Carry your own shopping bags.
  • Wear, as far as possible, the same clothes you always do when you go out. As far as possible, wear long trousers/dresses/joggers etc and also wear long sleeved tops.
  • Most important, wear your mask, as soon as you step out. Doesn’t have to be the fancy ones, a simple cloth one made at home will do as long as it covers your mouth and nose. Most importantly, make sure the mask is new or clean (has been washed).
  • Take gloves, to handle the items you are buying and in case you touch anyone or anything.
  • Wear footwear which is comfortable and if possible, washable.
  • Try not to carry a purse, either a wallet or loose money/cards in your pocket are the best.
  • Pocket sanitizers to use 2-3 times during visit.
  • Wash your hands before you go out and when you come back home.
  • Try your best not to touch your face with your hands or with gloves while out.

Once you reach your shop/supermarket of choice. You will probably have to wait in line to get in. Please make sure you are at least 5-7 feet away from the person in front and from the person behind. Maintaining this social distancing is necessary. If the shop does not have an organized line up system, think about going to another shop or maintain the distance yourself regardless of whether the shop is maintaining it or not.

If  possible and if available, pre-order and pickup, or order at the door and request them to give you the items. If this is not possible, go inside, get what you want and leave as soon as possible. Try your best not to browse and cause crowding. Remember, these are essentials and even this small action from your end can benefit everyone around you.

Once back home, change your clothes immediately and ensure that you keep footwear outside. Wash your hands with soap and if possible take a shower to ensure maximum cleanliness so as to not risk others at home. For items in plastic, tetra packs or carton packaging , wipe them down using normal cleaning detergent with a cloth/sponge. For vegetables, wash them with water. Medicine packets/bottles strips should also be wiped down and sanitized.

We hope these tips help you when you go out shopping for essentials. Are there any specific precautions you’re taking? Let us know in the comments below. For more articles like this, check out Healthy Reads or tune in to experts on GOQii Play.
