“Making a lifestyle change is easy but, requires determination to make it happen”

Basan1t

Many people prefer to work out alone in the gym or find other ways to exercise in isolation. But, best of the fitness success stories are inspired by friends, loved ones and dedicated personal trainers pushing the individual along every step of the way to fitness.  Basant Chaturvedi also got inspired by his fellow CIO friend Kamal  Karnatak and got on the path to fitness. Thanks to him, Basant has improved his fitness a great deal. Let’s hear Basant’s story in his own words.

I work as an Associate Director-IT” with a confectionary MNC based in Delhi. My job is quite strenuous and my stamina levels were low. Due to this, I would get tired very soon and easily. I used to do yoga but, I realized Yoga only improves flexibility. Increasing my stamina levels was a challenge and the other aspect was that my sugar levels started rising.

I was totally clueless about what to do. I surely needed some advice from experts who could tell me what I am exactly supposed to do. Something clicked in my brain, I wanted to overall improve my health for my own good.  I started looking for options to better my health. This is when my friend Kamal Karnatak suggested GOQii to me.

He came as a god sent angel at a time when I most needed advice on what to do regarding improving my health. Kamal told me about the step count feature, about water intake, sleep and everything that came with GOQii and above all, the fact that the band comes with a Coach who will guide and help you achieve your health goals.

He then narrated his story of change to me and how a lifestyle change helped him lose weight and also take to running. I found it fascinating and coach aspect interested me a great deal. I decided to go for a GOQii band. I not only bought one for myself also got one for my wife.

I made a commitment to myself that I wanted to get fit and healthy. GOQii states that you have to be active all the time, increase step count, taking the right portion of food and not over eat. Following these rules helped me achieve the daily target.

Prior to GOQii on my hand, there was no expert guidance about what to eat and what not to eat and also when to eat what. And I learned about water too that it is a very good natural supplement. I never was aware of that. And, about the step count too, I was unaware that every day one should clock at least 10,000 steps to be healthy. I used to travel small distance also by car but, now I walk as much as possible , thanks to GOQii. I have stopped using the elevator. I stay on the 7th floor and walk up the flight of stairs. Initially, it was tough as I am also 42 years old but, now I have got used to it.

My eating habits have also changed. I was eating more fried food than healthy foods. Even during fasts I would eat fried foods like Poori (fried bread). Now all that has stopped and I follow a proper healthy diet even during fasts. I have also cut down on my sweets intake. My intake of fresh fruits has also increased. Initially salads and fruits never part of the diet. It was once in a way kind of foods to be eaten.

My activity levels have also regularized. The lethargic feeling has vanished. My day starts early in the morning with a run or a game of badminton and then I remain active through the day. I easily clock about 10K to 12K steps daily. Considering I am doing regular running and playing a sport my water intake has also improved.

I never used to track water how much water I was drinking daily, but now I try to hit my water goal of 2.5 to 3 liters every single day.

Deciding to make that big lifestyle change is often the easy part. If you’re not happy about something in your life, it’s easy to acknowledge it and say you’re going to change. However, to actually follow through and make that change happen you’ll need a ton of determination. It’s no secret that your body can often be inclined to take it easy—that’s why you need to bring a strong, determined attitude to every workout in order to get the most out of it, and don’t get discouraged by the long road ahead. It’s a simple concept, but it’s proven effective time and again.

GOQii concept and my coach have been extremely motivating. It is because of my coach that I have been able to do so much and not get exhausted. Motivation is the key factor for people like me and GOQii coaches are the best  very good as a motivator.

What does Coach Aditi Save have to say about Basant Chaturvedi?

From the day I have got an opportunity to be Basant’s Coach, I am super proud of him and his disciplined lifestyle.

He is inclined towards fitness and wants to have an active life in a healthy way, he is a “no short-cut” kind of person and always achieves his targets with hard work and dedication. He is a fast learner and willing to take up my suggestions wholeheartedly and ready to experiment with different challenges and natural food options.

We have worked successfully so far and will continue working towards normalizing his blood sugar levels and to get relief from chronic back pain. It is his intrinsic motivation that in-spite of having these health issues he is one who will not give up easily and this super commitment towards health is what inspires him to consistently deliver an awesome performance.

Set small goals that are easy to achieve

Relaxing: Hemant in a meditative mode

Relaxing with Meditation: Hemanth in a reflective mode

At 22 years old he led the most sedentary lifestyle. While sitting down all day may seem harmless, but, he was not surprised that it was having a negative impact on his health. Being aware of the problem and not knowing how to go about rectifying the problem… is the story of most people’s lives. However, Hemanth Kumar did not lose heart and found a way out to get motivated and get on his path to fitness. His story in his own words.

I am a mechanical engineer and I have been working in shifts. Shift work means sleep and food patterns are erratic. Further due to lack of any form of exercise or physical activity, I would always feel lethargic. So much so that I would not be interested in doing anything. As for my daily diet, I would have 3 heavy meals namely breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It was no surprise for me that sitting behind a desk, commuting or relaxing on the couch for too many hours a day can be harmful to my health, but what I was not aware of was the extent of havoc it is causing my body. I realized it while I was reading an article on health.

After I finished reading it I was scared for myself as I was young and could not take it lightly. I had to do something to change my lifestyle before my condition got worse. I also read that most health professionals recommend walking 10,000 steps a day (approximately 5 miles = 8 Km). It is the ideal goal to set for improving health and reducing the health risks caused by inactivity.

This statement got me thinking and I started researching on various sites like Amazon and the likes looking for a fitness tracker. I was wanting a health gadget that could get me on track. Something that could track my fitness and other aspects. And, I came across GOQii. I read several reviews and content on GOQii. I was convinced with what I read. The best part was that it came with expert advice from a coach. I was relieved that there will be somebody to monitor my progress. So I was not going to be alone on my path to a healthy lifestyle.

GOQii is also about getting people to change their lifestyles without doing anything drastic. Changes are brought about purely through new healthy habit formation and letting go of your old unhealthy habits. I bought my GOQii band on December 25th and Dr. Afsha Shaikh is my coach.

I discussed my lifestyle with my coach and we zeroed in on my health goal. My first health goal was to get into a regular exercise regime, daily target to clock 13k steps and an increase my intake of protein which I lacked.

My coach got me into regular exercising. She also altered my diet. Instead of having three heavy meals a day. I started having small and frequent meals. I have also started including fruits in my diet which were missing earlier. Many of what my coach added to my diet were something I was aware of but never got around to having them. My water intake was also poor prior to GOQii and now I drink 2.5 litres of water daily without fail.

I have learnt a lot by being on the GOQii platform. While researching on health and fitness I remember reading “traditional thought suggests that having a healthy diet and getting aerobic exercise will offset the effects of time spent being sedentary. Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, you may not be able to counteract the effects brought on by the lack of activity throughout the rest of your day. Rather, the solution seems to be less sitting and more moving overall”.

That is exactly what my coach got me to do. She got me to start moving. My coach helped me set small goals and also guided me on how to achieve it. Today, I feel good about myself and more energetic. I am also fitter than before.

What does Coach Dr. Afsha Shaikh have to say about player Hemanth Kumar?

Hemanth Kumar had a long term goal to lose fat, extra inches, and weight. We had set some small term goals to increase fiber intake and I must say he was one of my dedicated players who has been following his goals seriously. Also, he has been very good with maintaining his step count which has reflects his enthusiasm in doing some good physical activity. On the days he could not complete his step count, he would make up for the loss over the weekend.  Initially, we had decided on exercising in the morning then when he got on the night shift he could not do morning exercises and therefore, we decided we would do exercises as and when possible. This decision suited him appropriately and he became more regular with his exercise.

India becoming a ‘Sweet Nation’: Let’s beat Diabetes

diabetes
India is becoming a sweeter nation by the day. Wondering what I mean by a sweeter nation. Today , on this day of World Diabetes day we would like to take you through some facts about diabetes. According to the World Health Organisation, India has been declared as the Diabetic capital of the world.

The statistics are alarming. In 2000 there were 32 million diabetics in India, in 2013, the figure doubled to 63 million and by 2030 it has been projected to touch 101.2 million. India ranks second, between China with 90 million and the USA with 24 million diabetics. The factors largely driving this dramatic rise include overweight and obesity. The annual spend on diabetes is Rs 1.5 lakh crore, 4 times the central Government’s allocation of Rs 32000 crore.

The Prime Minster of India Narendra Modi on World health day said on twitter that a healthy lifestyle is a key to overcoming diabetes. “Our lifestyle is the biggest cause for diabetes. If every citizen of my country is healthy, then my country will be healthy. I call upon you to defeat diabetes, which plays host to so many diseases,” said Modi in his message to Indians on World health day.

Some Facts

  • 422 Million adults globally suffer from diabetes
  • 5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes each year
  • 1 in 3 adults aged over 18 years is overweight and 1 in 10 is obese

Diabetes can be controlled however with exercise. Here are some excerpts from a blog written by one of the GOQii coaches Disti Shah. According to Disti, the facts and myths about diabetes are plenty especially on the kind of foods one should have or not have, whether one should exercise to control diabetes etc. But diet is not all that one needs to focus on. Exercise is equally important.

However, when diabetes exercises one should keep in mind the following at what sugar levels should we allow or not allow a diabetic person to exercise? What should be the intensity and frequency of exercise and What type of exercise should a Diabetic do?

Here are some information on about how regular exercise can control your Diabetes.

How does Exercise Help in Diabetes?

“GOQii’s approach to fitness is very motivating, workable and enriching that I easily managed to trek to Everest Base Camp

He is a filmmaker and started his own production house. Since then Life has been hectic for this young lad. He does indulge in travelling and exploring. He realized that as he was not going to stay young, which needed him to be fitter both mentally and physically…..so here is what Ridhesh Sejpal did…… his story in his own words.

I am a filmmaker and the Co-founder of Wise Guy Ent, which is where I started my entrepreneurial journey. Having my own production company makes my schedules generally hectic. To add to that I also travel for work and otherwise. These aspects give me limited time to do any kind of workout.  Although, I would make it a point to wake up early and hit the gym as often as I can.

But, at times when I am shooting or travelling, I would miss out on my gym training. During work / shoots, my sleep pattern would go haywire. On the nutrition front, I had the My fitness pal app and I followed it religiously for 3 months and also lost about 9-10 kgs, but after that, I was just aware.

I realized that I am not going to stay younger and it was all the more important for me to get fitter both mentally and physically. I wanted to be active on a daily basis and hence started looking out for a fitness tracker that could track my fitness progress. I came across “GOQii”. I researched to find out it was an Indian brand. I liked the idea of a personalized coach, who would keep track of your fitness, nutrition and overall health. I decided to go for it and got my GOQii band in August 2015. My health goal when I got the GOQii band was fitness for Everest Base Camp (EBC). I wanted to be extremely fit for the EBC trek that I was doing in November 2015.

Ruksar, being my coach did not give me goals but habits to follow. Since I am a vegetarian, she gave me tips on how to increase my protein intake in my regular diet. Her suggestions were also all practically doable. Nothing was impossible.

I had never trekked earlier in my life, therefore, I did some research and there were 3 things I wanted to concentrate on – to increase lung capacity, concentrate on strengthening my leg muscles and build stamina. I also joined a Les Mills & Cross Fit training classes for 3 months and made it a point to go religiously. My trek to EBC was challenging, terrific and breathtaking all at the same time! No words or pictures can elucidate to what I saw, felt and experienced up there in the Khumbu valley in Nepal!

I want to sincerely thank my coach Ruksar with all one’s heart for being a superb coach throughout. Pushing me daily and sticking to the basics. She helped me complete the trek successfully. Thanks to her coaching and my efforts, my lungs could endure the lack of oxygen and my muscles could survive the physical torture pretty well.  We did it!

During the trek, I also kept her diet sheet in my mind. My Coach’s “GPRS” (G Stands for Grilled, P stands for Poached, R stands for Roasted and S stands for Steam) rule, stuck with me and. I consciously followed it while I ate and I still do.

My takeaway from this experience was the solutions and advice my coach gave me. They were all practical and something which I can follow routinely all throughout my life. I feel GOQii’s approach to fitness is very motivating and workable / enriching. I have been able to inspire my family and friends, to the extent that a few family members and friends have now got the band already. My next big goal for 2016 is to run the Marathon.

What does Coach Ruksar Nathani have to say about Ridesh?

His primary goal was to loose belly fat, be fit and stay healthy apart from fitness for EBC trek. He was doing well with his activities so we started working on his food habits, introduced mid-meals, warm lemon water and salads and also worked on stress by setting a goal for breathing exercise. Ridesh religiously followed all the short term goals and as a result, there was inch loss at belly and was happy about eating well and was fitter and healthier than before.

I was informed 15 days before his EBC so I did a little research and summarized everything for him which included:
1. Obstacles that he will be facing
2. Ways to tackle those
3. Daily food options to be eaten before the trek for proper nutrition as there was intense exercise going on for building stamina and strengthening.
4. Food sources high in chlorophyll and food to be avoided that will deplete oxygen.
5. Food to be carried during the trek.
6. Food options when and where to eat while on a trek.
