6 Ways To Track & Achieve Your New Year Goals

6 ways to track and achieve your goals We are in the second week of the first month of 2025 and I am sure many of us have already made New Year Resolutions! The most common resolutions often revolve around “Losing weight and getting fit”, “Quitting smoking”, “Learning something new” or “Traveling to new places”.  The question is – are we working on them and what’s our game plan?

The desire to change something about yourself happens year after year. While intentions are good, most of us seldom end up fulfilling the resolutions we set. A recent article by Forbes magazine mentioned that only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year Goals.

Why Is It So Hard To Stick To New Year Goals?

Why do so many people fail at goal setting? What is it about those few who manage to get it right and achieve their goals?

There are many answers to the why’s and how’s. New Year goal setting is often seen as an opportunity to dish out a large bucket lists of all that we wanted to achieve but couldn’t throughout the year. It’s an attempt to tell ourselves that this year will definitely be better than the last.

The enthusiasm usually lasts through the first week of the New Year. Gradually, as days and months pass, interest in achieving these goals fades away. The human mind always finds excuses or loses interest midway, with little room for introspection. But fear not! Here are 6 ways to help you stay on track with your New Year goals.

6 Ways To Track & Achieve Your New Year Goals

  1. Create a Q&A: If you’ve decided to resolve a habit, prepare questions to ask yourself at timely intervals. This helps boost enthusiasm and keeps a check on progress. Analyze your life. Is there anything you want to change or improve? All answers start with questions, so be ready to create your list. Ask yourself: Who do I want to become? What can I improve? How can I change? Give yourself plenty of time—anywhere from a few hours to several days.
  2. The Devil Is In The Details: With your list ready, analyze it thoroughly to stick to your routine and track progress. For example, if your goal is to lose 10kg, track your weight monthly to measure how much progress you’ve made. Detailed data works as a roadmap to success.
  3. Gaze Into The Future: Create an emotional attachment to your New Year goals to make your journey enjoyable. Visualize how you’ll feel after achieving your goals. For instance, if your goal is to lose 10kg, imagine yourself at your ideal weight. This visualization motivates you to keep pushing forward. The more senses you engage, the better!
  4. Eating Elephants: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Break your goals into smaller, manageable portions. For instance, if you need to run 10km, the thought might feel overwhelming. Instead, break it down into smaller goals, like running 1km 10 times. Achieving these smaller milestones makes the larger goal feel attainable.
  5. Reward Yourself: Rewards are a powerful motivator. Celebrate every milestone you achieve. For instance, after running 1km, reward yourself with a 100-meter walk. This break will recharge you for the next stretch. You can also set a grand reward, like a dream vacation, after achieving your primary goal.
  6. Socializing: When you commit publicly, you’re more likely to stay motivated. Share your goals on social media or with friends, and update them on your progress. The accountability will push you to stick to your routine and achieve your goals.

And that’s it! A simple 6 step process to help you achieve your New Year Goals! We hope this article inspires you to take charge and accomplish your resolutions. Do share your thoughts in the comments below. For more tips on goal setting and achieving them, check out Healthy Reads.

How To Stick To Your New Year Resolutions!

new-year-resolutionsA new year has begun and with it, it’s once again time to make new resolutions. We’re sure a lot of you have already penned down your New Year resolutions. But what are these new year resolutions? More often than not, they are promises we make to ourselves or near and dear ones to kick one bad habit and imbibe a good change for a better future.

New Year Resolutions Could Be:

  • Weight loss
  • Get fit and regular exercise
  • Eating healthy
  • Joining a yoga class
  • Giving up smoking
  • Quitting excessive alcohol consumption
  • Playing a sport

Largely, I have noticed that most resolutions are around health and lifestyle. What is difficult, though, is sticking to the resolution made. It’s not easy to keep the enthusiasm going week after week, especially when you have never played a sport or been active in the past. It’s not easy to maintain the same motivation levels throughout the year. Discipline is hard to come by. Most people don’t feel motivated enough and give up within a few days. It takes focus, planning and determination to stick to resolutions made. It takes the same amount of time to change a particular habit.

Tips To Stick To Your New Year Resolutions

Golden Rule: Make your goal achievable and do not aim for goals that are too difficult to achieve

  • Once you have decided on your achievable resolution, write it down. Writing it down makes a greater connection between your thinking self and doing self. This makes the resolution more real than when it is only in your head.
  • Change one behaviour at a time. Replacing unhealthy behaviours with healthier ones requires time.
  • Fitness cannot be your short-term goal.
  • If you want to eat junk food, think about the benefits you will derive from it. It’s the same as thinking before making any financial investments. Occasionally, you can include a piece of Pizza or a burger but not daily.
  • If you are looking to reduce 20 kg, then achieve the target by reducing 2-3 kg a month. It is not practical to lose 20 kg in 2 months because it took years to accumulate all that fat and it will only go away slowly.
  • If you want to quit smoking and you are smoking 20 sticks a day, then reduce it gradually. You cannot stop immediately because it will take some time for your body and mind to adapt to the change.
  • If you intend to start working out, doing yoga or any other activity in the morning, then begin with 3 days a week instead of 7 days a week.
  • For working out, most have the issue of waking up early. Try to start at a time comfortable to you. If you wake up daily at 8 am but plan to start working out at 5 am, then it will seldom happen because your circadian system will take time to adjust. Instead, try to wake up at 7 am, which is practical, and you will continue for a long time.
  • Be positive while thinking about your achievable goal. Instead of saying, “I cannot do something,” say “I feel much better doing this.”
  • Always tell your near and dear ones about your resolution and seek their support to successfully achieve your goal.
  • Review your progress and reward yourself for the first target achieved

Lastly, do not wait for anything. Every day is a new day. Start working on your resolution immediately. As the saying goes, “Whatever you want to do tomorrow, do it today and whatever you want to do today, do it now!”

Go ahead and work on your New Year Resolutions. If you have already penned them down and want the right guidance and motivation, reach out to an expert by subscribing to GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here.

Mastering New Year’s Resolutions: Unveiling the Secrets to Lasting Commitments!

new year gaolsAs we edge closer to bidding adieu to 2024 and stepping into the vast possibilities of 2025, the tradition of setting New Year’s Resolutions looms over us. It’s that time of year when we pledge to shed old habits and embrace new beginnings.

Crafting these resolutions is the easy part, sparked by the optimism of a fresh start. Yet, as the year progresses, these promises often fade into the backdrop of our busy lives, forgotten amidst the daily grind.

Today, let’s dive into the art of choosing impactful resolutions and, more importantly, uncover the secrets to sticking with them throughout the year.”

“Why New Year’s Resolutions Matter: A Roadmap to Achieving Your Goals”

The onset of a fresh year sparks the drive for resolutions. It’s an ideal opportunity to chart new paths toward personal growth—be it mentally, emotionally, socially, physically, or intellectually.

Setting Tangible Goals:

Creating resolutions often involves vague objectives like “work harder,” “get in shape,” or “limit screen time.” Opting for specific and attainable targets, such as shedding a defined weight, establishing weekly routines, cultivating healthier habits, or a regular exercise regimen, fosters a solid plan for accomplishment. Clarity in objectives enables strategic and sustained focus throughout the year.

Curb Resolution Overload:

Selecting a myriad of resolutions can overwhelm and deter progress. Focus on a few tangible goals, progressing in manageable increments to maintain enthusiasm and momentum toward newer milestones.

Craft a Strategic Blueprint:

Detailed planning acts as the linchpin for success. It equips us to strategize effectively, anticipating challenges, and structuring viable solutions. Rushing headlong into radical changes, such as extreme diets or abrupt behavioural shifts, often backfires. Incremental changes, like modifying meal habits or incorporating brief exercises, prove pivotal in the pursuit of long-term objectives.

Stay Positive and Driven:

Initiating changes can be daunting, yet dwelling on negatives only hinders progress. Redirecting thoughts away from anticipated fatigue after workouts or the potential stress of quitting habits helps maintain momentum. Anchoring yourself to the envisioned benefits and embracing positivity significantly influences your journey’s success.

Embarking on a transformative journey requires smaller, consistent strides. Whether it’s aiming for weight loss or seeking tranquillity, gradual adjustments coupled with unwavering determination pave the way for a victorious and fulfilling resolution journey.

6 Tips to Help You Form and Stick to Resolutions

form and stick to resolutions

How often do we wait till the end of the year to make “resolutions” and end up not sticking to them? If you were to review your year basis the resolutions you made at the start, how close are you to achieving that goal? Do you find it difficult to form and stick to resolutions? Well, don’t worry! That’s where we come in.

A lot of resolutions fail because they’re a tad bit unrealistic. A resolution may be wrong for one of three main reasons:

  • It’s a resolution created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change.
  • It’s too vague.
  • You don’t have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution.

The key to form and stick to resolutions is planning a SMART one.

Points to Keep in Mind to Form & Stick to Resolutions

  1. Understanding Your Goals: At the end of the year, there is renewed optimism as there is high spirit among people to set new goals for the New Year. The achievable goals are those which are specific, measurable, relevant and time-bound (SMART). The first step to behavior change is to clearly understand what “it” is.
  2. Start Small: To do “something big or to do nothing” – this frame of mind rarely works when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. If you’ve never exercised before, it’s unlikely you will suddenly start working out for an hour every single day. Instead, start with small and attainable goals, such as going to the gym three days a week or short daily walks. Once this becomes a habit, you can tack-on larger goals.
  3. Make One Change at a Time: Setting multiple resolutions at a time will not give desired results, thus we should go at a steady pace.
  4. Make a Monetary Commitment: Financial incentives plays an important role to stick to the resolutions, either you get a reward for fulfilling your commitments or you pay from your own pocket for not following it and see others enjoying their rewards.
  5. Keep a Log: A daily activity log should be maintained and updated to track progress. This is one of the easiest and effective ways to make your resolutions stick. The more we monitor our performance, the more likely we are to achieving the goals.
  6. Have Patience: We must set realistic goals and realize that progress is never uni-directional. Some people see rapid gains in the beginning and hit resistance at a later stage. For others, initial progress may be painfully slow, but then they suddenly achieve rapid breakthroughs. Making lasting changes takes time. Thus patience is the “key to success”.

A Resolution is a promise a person makes. Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in the coming year.
