Cancer Anxiety in India: A Growing Epidemic

– 60% of respondents reported moderate to extreme worry about developing cancer.
– 33% expressed significant concerns over the financial burden of cancer treatment.
– 24% feared death as a result of cancer, underscoring its perception as a terminal illness.
– 70% had not undergone any form of cancer screening in the past five years, despite awareness of its importance.
– 56% worried about environmental factors like pollution and radiation contributing to cancer risks.
– 27.6% expressed anxiety related to poor lifestyle choices such as smoking and unhealthy diets.

Discussing cancer, though difficult, is crucial given the rising anxiety about the disease in India. GOQii’s recent Cancer report titled – “Living in Fear: The Hidden Epidemic of Cancer Anxiety Among the Public” reveals alarming statistics: over 60% of Indians experience significant fear of developing cancer, driven not only by the disease itself but also by the overwhelming treatment costs and feared mortality.

Despite this awareness, an astonishing 70% have not undergone any cancer screenings in the last five years, indicating a serious lag in preventive healthcare. This discrepancy highlights the urgent need for better public health strategies focused on enhancing screening access and educating the public about the benefits of early detection.

Recognizing the deep connection between lifestyle and health outcomes, experts emphasize the need for preventive approaches to mitigate these financial and health burdens.

Dr Anurag Agrawal, Head, of Koita Center for Digital Health, Dean of BioSciences and Health Research, Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University shared his insights: “As longevity increases, particularly when accompanied by unhealthy living, the risk of cancer, unfortunately, rises as well. It has become imperative that we focus on promoting preventive measures and fostering healthy habits to address this growing concern.”

Luke Coutinho, a Holistic Lifestyle Coach in Integrative Medicine, remind us that the integration of knowledge, science, lifestyle medicine, and epigenetics with traditional treatments can dramatically change our approach to this disease. “Now is the time to awaken and make the change with faith, belief, action, and science,” says Coutinho.

The financial aspect of cancer treatment is another grave concern. With 33% of respondents anxious about the economic burden of cancer treatment, it’s clear that the cost is not just financial but also emotional and psychological. Families fear being pushed to financial ruin, with the extensive costs of diagnostics, surgeries, chemotherapy, and ongoing medication looming large over their heads.

The report highlights the overwhelming fear of cancer as a death sentence among 24% of Indians, exacerbated by late detection and inadequate screening. This perception is often due to delayed diagnosis, making cancer seem incurable. It calls for significant improvements in India’s healthcare system, emphasizing the need for early detection and better access to treatment, especially in under-resourced rural areas.

Stressing the critical need to address this hidden epidemic, Vishal Gondal, Founder & CEO of GOQii says: “Cancer fear and anxiety is for real, and it’s affecting millions of people across India in ways that go beyond physical health. People are living in constant fear of not only the disease but also the potential financial and emotional toll it could take on them and their loved ones. This report serves as a wake-up call. GOQii is taking proactive steps to integrate mental health support with cancer care. Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression compound the fear of cancer, making it crucial to address these psychological impacts alongside the physical aspects of the disease.

Why should we eat more turmeric?

Curcumin

Turmeric is traditionally named as “Indian Saffron” because of its deep yellow-orange colour and has been used throughout the ancient Vedic culture of India as a condiment, healing remedy and textile dye. It is one of the most researched condiment and is used in almost all Indian curries, this spice has almost no calories and zeroes cholesterol. It is rich in dietary fibre, iron, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B6. The wide range of turmeric health benefits come mainly from its main ingredient, curcumin. Turmeric is used for arthritis, heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhoea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems and gallbladder disorders. It is also used for headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fever, menstrual problems, and cancer. Some people apply turmeric to the skin for pain relief, ringworm, bruises, leech bites, inflammatory skin conditions and infected wounds.   • Potent Antioxidant

Curcumin has a huge therapeutic value as boosting immunity is one of its most important properties. Oxidized cholesterol damages blood vessels and promotes plaques formation that can lead to heart attack or stroke. This super spice  helps the body to destroy mutated cancer cells and prevents its spreading into other organs. Moreover, It causes cancer cells to commit suicide. Turmeric prevents cancer progression by 2 ways: first, by enhancing liver function and second by preventing blood supply to cancer cells which may be necessary for their growth.

  • A Potent, Yet Safe Anti-Inflammatory

Curcumin is thought to be the primary pharmacological agent in turmeric. This makes it effective for fighting heart disease, osteoarthritis pain and other health problems related to inflammation. Curcumin is believed to reduce certain enzymes in the body known to trigger inflammation. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects are comparable to the potent drugs like hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin. Unlike the drugs, which are associated with significant toxic effects (ulcer formation, decreased white blood cell count, intestinal bleeding), curcumin produces no toxicity.

Curcumin promotes weight loss and reduce the incidence of obesity-related diseases. Turmeric stimulates the production of bile which helps to break down fatty foods, which in turn, may help you lose weight. Taking one teaspoon of Turmeric powder with every meal may help in losing weight. This of course doesn’t cancel the fact that you need to eat healthy and exercise.

  • Slows the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease

Curcumin in turmeric has a potential role in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration together with declining activities of daily living and behavioral changes. Various effects of curcumin, including anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant property, improves overall memory in Alzheimer’s patients.

  • Natural Painkiller

Turmeric can be considered as an instant painkiller option. Turmeric is capable of fighting a variety of pain that would otherwise be rated with over-the-counter pain medication which just suppresses the pain unlike turmeric which attempts to heal the pain as well.

A Few Quick Serving Ideas to include turmeric in meals:

  • Add turmeric to egg salad to give it an even bolder yellow colour.
  • Give salad dressings an orange-yellow hue by adding some turmeric powder to them.
  • Season rice, vegetables and curries with turmeric.
  • Turmeric is a great spice to complement recipes that feature lentils.
  • Include the spice as an ingredient in your regular meals.
  • You can make a tea out of turmeric. Boil about four cups of water with a spoonful of turmeric for about ten to fifteen minutes. Strain and drink. The best remedy for a sore throat.
  • Add turmeric into your daily smoothies
  • Add turmeric to a glass of organic warm milk which helps fight cold and flu and a remedy for better sleep

Equality in Healing: Overcoming Global Challenges in Cancer Treatment

World Cancer DayAccess to essential health services is a huge challenge for at least half the world’s population, according to a report from the World Bank and WHO. Many households are pushed into poverty as they have to pay for healthcare from their own pockets. This is especially true for cancer, a disease that many people are denied basic care for, although we live in a time where there are amazing advancements in cancer prevention, diagnostics and treatment.

The equity gap is costing people lives as those who need cancer care face barriers at every turn. Factors such as income, education, location and discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability and lifestyle affect cancer care negatively. So do risk factors such as tobacco, diet or environmental hazards.

Barriers That Affect Cancer Care Gender Norms and Discrimination:

Women and girls face discrimination because of stereotypes and expected gender roles. Men also face challenges because of social norms surrounding masculinity, which stop them from taking life-saving procedures such as surgery for early prostate cancer, for fear of incontinence or impotence.

Socioeconomic Status: Poverty is a major obstacle to proper care as many people cannot pay for or access screening and treatment services. The ways of prevention and knowledge among these communities are also low.

Age Discrimination: Older individuals are greatly underrepresented in the research that establishes the standards for cancer treatment. Many older women with breast cancer get less chemotherapy than their younger counterparts. More than 70% of deaths caused by prostate cancer happen in men above the age of 75. Age should not affect the quality of care one gets.

Rural-Urban Divide: Where one lives, should not affect if one will live. Rural patients are often diagnosed at later stages and are less likely to get suitable treatment. The financial cost of traveling to a place where one can get treatment and getting the right treatment can be too much.

Homophobia, Transphobia & Related Discrimination: Around the world, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQAI) community face aggression and discrimination. They are also likely to face lack of awareness or bias from health practitioners.

These barriers to cancer care are only some of the ways in which people can be denied of cancer care. But these barriers can be removed. The first step is to acknowledge this inequality, question our own beliefs and prejudices, listen to the views of people living with cancer and fight these gaps when we see them.

What Leaders and Governments Can Do To Improve Cancer Care:  

Leaders and governments have a vital role in enhancing cancer care and closing the equity gap. Here are some of the steps they can take:

Improve the health system and make cancer services more accessible and affordable, especially in low- and middle-income countries and rural areas. This can be done by investing in infrastructure, equipment, human resources, and supply chains, as well as offering universal health coverage and social protection schemes

  1. Reduce and manage cancer risk factors, such as tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and environmental pollution, by enacting effective policies and regulations. These include taxing harmful products, restricting their promotion, enforcing smoke-free and labeling laws, and promoting healthy habits.
  2. Support and apply research and innovation in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care. This involves funding and facilitating studies, trials, and technology, and promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
  3. Empower and involve people and communities in cancer care and advocacy, and meet their voices and needs. This involves educating on cancer prevention and early detection, providing psychosocial and palliative care, and supporting civil society organizations and patient groups that work for cancer causes.

By taking these steps, leaders and governments can make a change in enhancing cancer care and saving lives. They can also help achieve the global goals and targets set by the World Health Organization and the United Nations, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases.
