Uric acid and seven ways to reduce it

uric acid

You must have come across people who complaint about having something called ‘Gout’. Gout is a disease characterized by an abnormal metabolism of uric acid, resulting in an excess of uric acid in the tissues and blood.

Uric acid is a product of metabolic breakdown of purine nucleotides. And, high serum uric acid can lead to a condition called gout. The chemical is associated with other medical conditions including kidney stones and diabetes.

Normal results are between 3.5 and 7.2 milligrams of uric acid per deciliter of blood (mg/dL)

Follow these tips which will help you lower your uric acid levels:

  1. Increase water intake- Water is required to flush off the uric acid formed in the body. When the body is well hydrated, uric acid crystals are difficult to form. Drink at least 3-4 liters per day to remove the uric acid from the body. You can include buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water, green tea etc to increase your overall fluid intake
  2. Reduce intake of purine rich food- Uric acid is formed by breakdown of proteins called Purines. Although, it is naturally formed by the body, it is also obtained from certain foods like red meat, mushrooms, baked products containing yeast and fermented products. You can include lentils, split dals, milk, egg whites etc to improve your protein intake.
  3. High Fiber food– Foods high in fiber absorb uric acid present in the blood stream and thus easily eliminating it through kidneys. Good fiber sources are fruits, vegetables, whole grains and products over refined products.
  4. Avoid intake of caffeine and alcohol- Caffeine and products containing caffeine like coffee, tea, aerated drinks, and alcohol hinder excretion of uric acid from the blood stream by binding it
  5. Consume good amount of Vitamin C rich foods- Vitamin C helps in excretion of uric acid. Sources of Vitamin C- Citrus fruits, bell peppers, cabbage, amla (Indian gooseberry), guava, etc will help reduce Uric Acid.
  6. Reduce sugar intake- Sugar interferes with excretion of uric acid. A study mentioned that daily intake of 300 ml serving of sweetened drink increases chances of gout by 13%
  7. Consuming Apple cider vinegar- Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid which turns alkaline in body making the environment alkaline. It is said that it breaks the uric acid crystals and prevents from recurrence by aiding blood circulation and purification. It reduces inflammation and swelling in the joints allowing for better flexibility of the joints

    Hey Hardika,
What an useful blog post! But i have some additions to your points of view.
    1. Coffee is good for Gout disease. Trust me. Many documents showed that coffee can prevent us from suffering Gout.
    2. Don’t eat viscera because this food increase purin very much. Many people in Asian countries love this food. But it makes your uric acid level increase highly.
    Best wishes from Lien,

Vit C causes gout. Read real scientific literature.
Some moderate purine foods such as lamb cause gout.

I have uric acid level 8.9 & I need to reduce it to 7 in seven days as I have to clear a medical test for an official commitment. I have completely stopped my protein intake & my diet includes only fruits & vegetable salads. I am consuming around 4 Ltrs of water every day alongwith lemonade thrice a day. Is this diet plan sufficient or do I need to add anything else

prashant do what i am doing … i have gout on my toe but its started on all my toes and both my main thumbs on my hands

      then i started the following:

      – every morning for atleast one week, i take icy cold water , mix half a lemon or lime in it, add sodium bicarbonate or baking soda in it , and the first thing in the morning you must do is drink this . if you want to drink plain water first then thats cool. but no food until you have this. this will make your system alkaline and the joint pains in most joints will disappear … although the toe one may stay because thats the one thats been affected the most and is probably damaged .
      – once this is done, find gluten free food alternatives. do not eat bread or yeast products that contain gluten … gout and diabetes have some common foods that create them. so cut out sugar too.
      – whenever you feel like eating sugar, eat watermelon, pineapple, pomegranate , coconut, coconut water, aloe vera natural juice, strawberries, cherries, plums, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, broccoli , cabbage, eggs. these are all good foods and you wont see your gout getting activated.

      – please stay away from mushrooms, prawns, asparagus, shrimp, sea food that has shells like crabs oyster mussels etc.

instead of rice or chapati try quinoa and chia chapatis… and believe me your gout will reduce drastically very soon . about a week and you will notice the difference

but yes, if you are having sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, that means you are getting a lot of sodium.. completely cut out salt from all other foods.. do not have salt in any other food..

i know this is tough .. but gradually you start liking saltless food.. and if you want a healthy life then its something you will have to do without a choice.. unless you want to be bedridden when gout becomes too bad…. and you will become a burden on your family

I totally agree with hydration, when I don’t drink enough water, I can feel my gout coming on. I know chemically and biologically it doesn’t make sense, but a lot of people claim that baking soda and water help them out a lot. Any thoughts on that?

In terms of hydration, I’ve personally found that coconut water has been the absolute best help for keeping my gout under control. As a matter of fact, I even took the opportunity to review the coconut waters.

Hi Hardika, Thank you so much for this valuable information. On the Saturday morning of Mother’s Day Weekend i woke up with my left foot swollen and in excruciating pain. I couldn’t walk without support. I had to finally go to the ER on Mother’s Day. They were not able to determine what was wrong, but when i went to the Rheumatologist she determined that my Uric Acid Levels were high and i had Gout. So, now the journey begins. And, my case is difficult because due to the use of the Purple Pill my Kidney Function had bern reduced to 40% so that is why suddenly the Uric Acid build up. I have been given a prescription for 100mg of Allopurinal which is not helping. Others have told me their scripts are 300mg. But my doctor has to take it slowly because of my Kidneys and constantly watch the levels of the U.A. I was told that BlackCherry Juice will rid you of the U.A. You have given so many suggestions thst i am excited about trying. I don’t drink, or eat a lor of baked goods or eat a lot of red meat. I am overweight and i do take HCTZ with my Blood Pressure medicine to help keep it under control. But Coconut Water, Lemon Water, Apple Cider Vinegar and Vitamin C are natural and simple things to try. Thanks again for your compassion for the Gout Patient. This hurts worse than having a baby. Thank you. Janette Young

It is obviously fatuous that those who are suffering from such sever diseases like gout do not quit drinking alcohol and foods that contains sugar a lot. These also become the reason of gout. We must take a prescribed diet.

I have high Uric acid levels and had 3 kidney stone surgeries in January of this year. I’m on a low carb diet and I’m limiting my meat intake. 2 questions: 1) how much meat should I eat each week and 2) ever so often my ankle swells up and lasts for about 2 weeks. It is extremely painful to walk during that period. Would you consider that gout? The podiatrist once said it could be Achilles tendinitis, but I have my doubts.

I have been suffering from high uric acid for about 30 years (I am 70 years old now) and indeed I have applied the measures by Hardika successfully to reduce it. Only for a period of about one year had I taken medication, but probably I will do so now again. My feeling (I am not doctor) is that uric acid goes up and down depending on body conditions not quite clear to us. E.g. when I was fatter and had high triglycerides, uric acid got high and often suffered from small kidney stones. I managed to reduce it mainly by drinking a lot of water, but triglycerides remained high. Now I managed to get thinner, triglycerides are normal but uric acid is high. This is probably due to my high blood pressure medication that is diuretic. Several doctors here (Greece) say “take medication, if you cannot reduce it by diet and exercise”
May I propose another measure to reduce uric acid and kidney uric stones? For 4 consecutive days, early in the morning (before any food) we drink one big teaspoonful (15 ml) of fresh lemon juice (I drink more than that) together with water. Of course without sugar or anything else in the drink. This is written in the book “100 herbres, 1000 remedies” by Constantine Bazeos (1985), a journilist specialized in healthy nutrition. However he pointed out that we have to interrupt this procedure for a week before repeating it, it is not healthy to apply it every day. And probably some of us cannot tolerate lemon juice+water even for one day. I understand that lemon juice makes blood alkaline, thus increasing solubility of crystals of uric acid, rejected with urine.

Recently I checked my blood, unfortunately my Uric Acid was 10mg/dl. I’ve started diet and taking of your mentioned food and taking of more Water,Lemon, Apple and Low Purine Foods.Gout and any other Arthritis problem but I started for being in Safe side.
Meanwhile every day I’m walking anddoing exercise for one hour. I’m around 64yrs old doctor and I’m under medication and taking Q-LYCO one Capsule, Cap Ecosprine-150mg, Amlodpin and one tab Folvit every day.
I think there is studies that by regular taking of Multi vitamine/Menrals and Aspirin the level of Uric Acid will go high in Blood and I’m continuously taking more than 5 years.

This sounds really whacky, but I have treated my gout by just taking a few slives of Garlic and attaching them to the joint affected. It’s smelly but work really well to reduce swelling and pain. Be careful t remove after 12 hours and have a break otherwise the skin can get damaged.

Between 4 and 5.30 am I do pranayam, light yoga and leg exercise daily for the last 15 years. I used to walk atleast 4 KMs in between 5.30 6.15 am, but after the knee pain I walk limping for 30 minutes. And yet this uric acid increase is just a year old. Early morning I drink one fresh lemon juice with warm water daily. After a gap of 30 minutes I also take Avala and geogry Leha prepared at home. I do not take any type of non-vege food, including eggs. I do not take alcohol. At night 30 minutes before going to bed I drink hot milk with. home grown Haldi powder.

Please let me know if my life style is conducive to good health. And what more I need to do to reduce uric acid level and the knee pain.

My uric acid levels are high , and my big toe is always numb . My doctor put me on Allopurinol which helps a little . I do not eat red meat and I do eat a lot of veg .
Also I have trouble trying to lose a couple of pounds for ideal weight .
Is it tough to lose weight with uric acid …

Concentrated sour cherry juice also helps significantly, I can highly recommend it. I buy Montmerency cherry juice, it must be sour, regular cherry juice doesn’t work. It tastes awful but still worthwhile

I’m a renal transplant patient, and have high uric acid and gout flare ups. I want to know if taking Celery seed. Or Cherry extract will affect my kidney or my anti rejection meds ?. They seem to be my best defense…if I can take them safely.
    Thanks

Very helpful. The Apple cider vinegar seems to be working. Halving my coffee intake and increasing hydration has helped me feel better overall.

Nice article thanks for posting, however I have read that coffee reduces uric acid. I am having high uric acid and I have increased my black coffee intake. What I read here is contradictory, please advise.

Wow, this is a good discussion. I’ve never seen it in any literature, but I’ve always thought that gout was also related to weight issues. The people I personally know that have gout are also overweight. That would be great to know. Perhaps it’s just an overdue diet that is preventing me from getting rid of the pain
