5 Winter Salads You Need to Try Now!

winter salads

With winter at its peak, it is all about comfort food for most of us. Even people who limit their tea, coffee and sugar intake, don’t mind sipping on 1-2 extra cups. But this is how we tend to get through these chilly months. While the comfort food makes us feel good, it also makes us feel sluggish. The best way to bounce back is eating clean by filling our plates with more veggies. The sad truth though, is that we don’t find salads as appealing as we do during summer. To make things interesting, I have some nice warm winter salads to help you get the goodness of veggies in your meals and keep your belly satisfied.

1. Chickpea Salad

Ingredients

  • Dried chickpeas (kabuli chana) – ½ cup soaked overnight
  • Grated fresh turmeric – 2 tsp
  • Grated ginger – 2 tsp
  • Chopped green chili – 2 tsp
  • Chopped green coriander – 2-3 tbsp
  • Medium onion – 1 thinly sliced
  • Small amla – ½ finely chopped
  • Capsicum – ¼ cup finely chopped
  • Boiled potato – 1 cut in cubes
  • Tomato – 1 chopped
  • Roasted sesame seeds – 2 tsp
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Jeera – ¼ tsp
  • Hing powder – 1 pinch
  • Sea salt to taste

Method: Put soaked chickpeas in a pressure cooker along with grated turmeric, salt to taste & ¾ cup water. Let it cook for 4-5 whistles till it gets soft. Meanwhile, you can chop your vegetables. Now heat a nonstick pan on high flame, add 1 tsp ghee, jeera & let it crackle. Then, add the hing & boiled potato on high heat till crisp from all sides. Now combine steaming hot chickpeas, veggies & all other ingredients in a bowl & enjoy!

 2. Sweet Potato and Beetroot Salad

Ingredients

  • Boiled sweet potatoes – 2
  • Boiled beetroot – 1 medium
  • Spring Onion – ¼ cup chopped
  • Extra virgin olive oil or Sesame oil – 1 tsp
  • Fresh coriander leaves – 2 tbsp
  • Green chilly – 1 finely chopped
  • Sesame seeds – 2 tsp
  • Roasted pumpkin seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Paneer cubes – 50 gm
  • Sea Salt to taste
  • Black pepper powder – ¼ tsp
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp

Method: Heat a nonstick pan over medium flame and grill paneer cubes over it. Add sweet potato, beetroot cubes and stir on high heat for a minute. Put the grilled veggies and paneer in a big bowl. Add the olive oil, lemon juice, salt, black pepper and sesame seeds in a separate bowl and mix. Pour this mixture over the grilled veggies mixture. Now add chopped spring onions, green chilly & fresh coriander. Toss everything together and your sweet, tangy & crunchy salad is ready.

3. Sweet Corn Salad

Ingredients

  • Sweet corn – 1 cup
  • Chopped carrot – ¼ cup
  • Chopped capsicum – ¼ cup
  • Paneer – 100 gm
  • Chopped onion – ¼ cup
  • Roasted sunflower seeds – 2 tbsp
  • Sea Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice – 1 tbsp
  • Cayenne/black pepper powder – ¼ tsp
  • Freshly chopped coriander – 2 tbsp

Method: Boil sweet corn in a saucepan with some water. While your corn is boiling, grill your paneer in a nonstick pan. Strain water from corn and transfer it to a big bowl. Now add paneer, chopped veggies, lemon juice, salt & pepper & toss everything together. Enjoy a hot bowl of salad.

4. Kidney Beans Salad

Ingredients

  • Boiled kidney beans (Rajma) – 1 cup
  • Chopped red onion – ¼ cup
  • Spring onion greens – ¼ cup
  • Chopped tomatoes – ¼ cup
  • Grated radish – ¼ cup
  • Small amla – 1 finely chopped
  • Grated ginger – 1 tsp
  • Finely chopped garlic – 1 tsp
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Chopped green chilly – 1-2 tsp
  • Freshly chopped coriander – 2 tbsp

Method: Add boiled rajma while it is still hot (or reheat if boiled in advance) in a big bowl. Now add veggies, herbs, spices and mix everything together. Your protein rich salad is ready!

5. Fruity Nutty Salad

Ingredients:

  • Pomegranate seeds – ½ cup
  • Orange, Kiwi, Apple – 1 each
  • Slivered Almonds – 7-8
  • Walnuts – 4 chopped
  • Roasted watermelon seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Rock salt – 1 pinch
  • Cayenne pepper – 1 pinch

Method: Peel the orange & cut into slices. Divide each slice in half. Cut the apple and kiwi into cubes. Remedies For Leg Pain During Winter

leg pain during winterAs winter sets in, there are many health issues that some people face, and one of them is feeling immense stiffness and soreness in the legs leading to being less active. Is it normal to feel these aches and pain? or is it a serious health concern? Let’s find out the reason for leg pain during winter.

Why do we feel pain and stiffness in Winter?

According to various studies, the cold causes your muscles to lose heat and contract, this makes you feel tight especially around the joints, and eventually you tend to lose range of motion and your nerves can also be easily pinched.

Another theory says a drop in barometric pressure in winters, cause the tendons, muscles and surrounding tissues to expand. Because of the confined space within the body, this can cause pain, especially in joints affected by arthritis.

In general, during winters, we limit our movement due to the cold weather, don’t exercise much, and keep ourselves wrapped up in blankets to stay warm, eat calorie dense food and put on a few extra kilos! All these factors also attribute to increased sensation of pain and stiffness in the legs.

Whatever the reason, it is a fact that many people have “flare ups” or aggravated symptoms of aches and pains in their body especially the lower limbs. Though you may not take it as a serious health concern, one should work towards preventing and dealing with it, so that the aches and pain do not aggravate and restrict your mobility in winters.

Tips to Reduce Leg Pain During Winter

1. Keep Yourself Warm with Proper Clothing
Use cotton, wool or fleece long-sleeved clothing since these materials work the best at maintaining body heat. Wear slim-fitting clothes for your underlayer, so that you don’t look bulky and can easily move your limbs. Don’t forget to wear your woollen cap, gloves, scarf and overcoat (if really cold); with a warm pair of socks and shoes while going out for a walk or even for an outing. Long woollen socks are advised to keep your legs warm. There are woollen thermals available that cover your legs from mid thigh to ankle and are very comfortable. Keeping your muscles warm is important to feel good and comfortable. The right kind of shoe will prevent any kind of injury from a fall or slip.

2. Stay Active
It is important to stay active and exercise your joints and muscles to reduce pain and stiffness during winters. Exercise increases blood circulation, boosts production of your body’s synovial fluid, which lubricates your joints and makes movement easy and comfortable. Plus, a good workout releases your body’s natural feel-good compounds (happy hormones: endorphins, dopamine and serotonin), resulting in reduced perception of pain and boosting your mood and overall sense of well-being. Walking and stationary cycling are good low-impact options to improve blood flow and leg strength. Just remember to warm-up a bit first and skip high-impact exercises if they bother your joints.

Some exercises you should be doing at regular intervals are:

  • Ankle Circles: This exercise is great to warm the muscles in the lower legs before starting a full exercise routine. Ankle circles also increase joint flexibility. The technique can easily be performed while sitting or standing and holding a chair or railing for support.
  • Leg Raises While Sitting: This exercise will improve your quadriceps strength and can be easily done while watching T.V. or sitting with friends/ family. Sit with your thighs well placed on a chair, back touching the backrest and then raise your foot up till it is in line with the thigh. Repeat both sides, 10 times each, twice a day.
  • Calf Raises: By strengthening the calf muscles, you can comfortably climb up and down stairs or walk on elevated terrain. Use a chair for support, and stand on a large book or small stool. Rise up on the toes and hold for five seconds, then lower, repeat five to ten times. Drop the heels to the floor to stretch the calves. Hold for five seconds and relax.
  • Standing Leg Raises: This exercise strengthens the muscles in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and thighs. Stand sideways behind a chair while holding the chair back for support. Lift the outer leg to the side while keeping it straight from the hip to the heel. Keeping the back straightened, hold for five seconds, and lower. With the same leg, stand straight and move the leg back while keeping it straightened. Hold for five seconds and relax. Repeat the process with the other leg. Perform 10 repetitions with each leg, then repeat.
  • Knee Ups: High Knees are a cardio-intensive exercise performed at a fast pace. It engages your core, strengthens all the muscles in your legs, gets your heart rate up and improves momentum, coordination and flexibility. Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Lift up your left knee to your chest. Switch to lift your right knee to your chest. Continue the movement, alternating legs and moving at a sprinting or walking pace for 4-5 minutes.

Similarly there are many other exercises that you can do at home to avoid leg pain during winter, depending upon your current physical health. For instance, squats/wall squats, straight leg raises, prone leg raises, lunges, etc.

3. Add Anti-Inflammatory Components to your Daily Diet
It is important to include anti-inflammatory foods in your daily diet, to reduce inflammation, pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles. You can include superfoods such as Ginger, Turmeric, Chilly Peppers, Mint and Virgin Olive Oil. Choose colourful foods like blueberries, blackberries, cherries, spinach, kale and broccoli. Opt for Salmon, Tuna, Sardines, nuts and seeds. Avoid processed foods, excess sugar and salt; high intake of alcohol.

4. Get Enough Vitamin D
During winter, Vitamin D levels naturally dip as we get less exposure to sunlight. Low levels of Vitamin D increase sensitivity to pain. Vitamin D-rich foods such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, cheese and egg yolks are important since Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food, which is another important mineral for bone health that can help reduce pain. Get your levels checked and ask your doctor about supplements if your levels are low.

5. Hydrate Well
We tend to drink less water during winter, leading to dehydration and even the slightest of dehydration can cause increased sensitivity to pain. Drink at least 2-2.5 litres of water daily. You can have lukewarm water if not comfortable with water at room temperature.

6. Treat Yourself to a Massage
Massaging the legs increases the blood and lymphatic circulation, relaxes and normalises the soft tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments), which releases nerves and deeper connective tissues; hence reducing spasm in the muscles and overall pain sensation. There are many essential oils that you can use to massage gently on your muscles as they have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, like lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil. Other commonly used oils for massage include – coconut oil, sesame oil, mustard oil, almond oil and olive oil.

The mentioned tips, should keep the leg pain during winter away! So leave the quilts and start moving! Eat right, hydrate well, stay active, enjoy and level up this beautiful winter weather! But if your symptoms aggravate, despite all precautions, do consult your doctor.

GOQii Trail Challenge Heroes: Give Up on Shankar Sabadi Giving Up!

Shankar Sabadi

Through adversity, there is redemption! What would life be without challenges? How would you know your limits? It is because of challenges we learn our limits, how to push past them and reach our goals. Getting demotivated is natural but with a sound mind and a strong spirit, nothing is impossible! For everyone who was a part of the GOQii Trail Challenge 2019, this was one of the most heroic tales which unfolded before us! Shankar Sabadi didn’t just complete the challenge but served as a living, breathing example of what you do when faced with adversity.

How Was the Experience Compared to 2018?

Shankar Sabadi has been an active GOQii Player since 2017. Since undergoing a transformation and making a positive lifestyle change, he has always been looking for challenges to test his limits. This was the second time that Shankar Sabadi had participated in the GOQii Trail Challenge. Although he said it was painful, and you’re about to find out why, he said it was a refreshing experience when compared to last year.

As the trail challenge was a fairly fresh concept introduced in 2018, the participants, Shankar included, didn’t know what to expect other than the fact that they had to walk 50km. He didn’t expect the mix of hiking, trekking, inclines and declines. Despite not knowing what awaited him, he completed the Trail in 2018 within 12 hours.

This year, he trained himself well for the challenge ahead by climbing stairs every day, going for mountain walks and taking normal ones as well.

Shankar Sabadi at GOQii Trail Challenge 2019

The trail began and all our participants went on route. After a group of 8 people, including Shankar Sabadi and a pacer left the 1st checkpoint, they were following the ribbons used to mark the trail. However, they missed one and took a wrong route. The path was rocky, covered with dense bushes, which made Mr. Sabadi realize that they might have taken a different route. He suggested they should return to the last ribbon.

Few of them weren’t in favour of the decision as they had walked for at least half an hour. After much discussion, the pacer confirmed that they were on the wrong route and they all decided to retrace their steps. As Shankar Sabadi turned around, he tripped on some pebbles. He quickly realized that he won’t be able to avoid the fall and instead of taking the fall on his back and hurting it, he decided to fall on his hands.

He immediately realized that he had fractured his hand…

Never Back Down! Give Up On Giving Up!

He did experience pain and his fellow walkers helped him to his feet. They noticed his arm was swollen. He just kept his hand in his pocket and asked everyone to move ahead. He didn’t want anyone to be delayed on his account.

At the next checkpoint, he asked one of the support staff to spray some pain reliever on his arm. They said a doctor will be available only at the village and offered to take him there. Shankar Sabadi was not ready to give up. He was determined to complete the trail. He said that even though his hand is fractured and hurts, his legs are okay.

Seeing his unshakeable determination, the staff made a makeshift splint out of a tree branch. One of the crepe bandages was used to tie the arm and another as a sling to rest the arm. With this arrangement, he continued on the trail. The walk was painful and the injury slowed him down but didn’t by any means stop him. He had to tread very carefully as he couldn’t use his arm to balance. All the pressure was on his left foot.

He is extremely thankful to all the fellow walkers who carried his bag, offered him water, supplements and energizers along the way (you know who you are and you guys are awesome!) Thanks to this, he only had to focus on walking.

After a lot of trials and tribulations, fighting through the pain and overcoming all of it, Shankar Sabadi completed the trail in 14 hours, just 2 hours behind his last year’s finishing time. Once the challenge was over and we reached Mumbai, he left for home and visited his doctor, who diagnosed that his arm is not broken but curved due to the impact of the fall. His arm was plastered for 3 weeks. You’ll be glad to know that he is recuperating at home and taking physiotherapy sessions to increase blood circulation to that arm and strengthen it.

We often hear of heroes and it is true, not all heroes wear capes. Some heroes teach us to push forward no matter what! Shankar Sabadi exemplifies what it means to #BeTheForce! He says that since he joined GOQii, he has given up on giving up.

Where else could you have heard such a valiant tale? Where else could you feel this energy? If you’re still having doubts, let this story be your motivation to participate in the next GOQii Trail Challenge and complete it.

We’ll be sharing many more heroic stories of participants who made #LifeWorthWalking through Healthy Reads as well as GOQii Play. Do you have an awesome GTC story to share? Write to us here.
