5 Simple Tips to Boost Metabolism and Lose Weight

boost metabolism

Ever wondered what metabolism is and why it is so important for your health? Metabolism is the process by which the food we eat is converted into energy. Going deeper into it, every cell in our body is producing energy through the chemical process of metabolism.

At a young age, our muscle mass stores energy that can prevent unhealthy weight gain. But as we age, we lose our muscle mass, which leads to excess fat accumulation.Metabolism starts slowing down as we reach 40 up to about 5% every decade thereafter. Our challenge will be to beat the metabolic slow down which is not impossible either as long as you follow these 5 eating habits to boost metabolism.

1. Eat Your Meals on Time

Busy routines such as the early morning rush to work, busy afternoons coupled with a late dinner and unruly sleep timings throw our circadian rhythm off track. The body is balanced with our circadian rhythm and any disruption can slow the metabolism down.

Our digestive power is naturally strong during noon which is why our ancestors had lunch between 12-1pm. As the day passes and night begins, our digestion is slowed down. Eating dinner late can disturb the circadian rhythm. Many research studies have proven that disturbed circadian rhythm can impair metabolism with a raised risk of metabolic disorders and obesity. Having meals on time can address this issue.

  • Ideal breakfast time: Before 10 am
  • Ideal Lunch time: Between 12 pm – 2 pm
  • Ideal Snack time: 4 – 5 pm
  • Ideal dinner: Between 7 pm – 9 pm

2. Mindful Eating

Very often when we have to eat outside or during some special occasion, we are likely to overeat not because we are hungry but because the food looks appealing or we are distracted while eating, or we are in a bad mood.

As per research studies, mindful eating habits improved metabolism while reducing the metabolic risk factors like high blood sugar levels, low levels of HDL or high blood pressure and large waist circumference. We need to incorporate mindful eating habits in our routine. For instance:

  • Consuming food because we are hungry instead of eating out of habit
  •  Chewing food slowly and thoroughly, savouring the taste
  • Thinking about how the food with all our senses before, during and after eating can help our body and health

3. Spice up Your Metabolism

Many spices from our kitchen can be good metabolic boosters when included in our daily diet. Turmeric, Cinnamon, Jeera, Fennel, Ginger, Ajwain, Clove and Nutmeg, because of some special chemical component and their healing effect on our body, can easily jumpstart metabolism when taken in right amounts.

4. Eat Whole Grains & Protein

Including a variety of whole grains like oats, barley, rye, quinoa, ragi and bhajra, can offer us rich sources of fiber and a diet high in protein can rev up the metabolism by controlling spiking sugar levels and keep us full for a longer time. Apart from this, protein consumption can increase the metabolic rate by 15-30% by raising the thermic effect of food (TEF). Thermic effect of food is caused by the extra calories that are required by our body to digest, absorb and assimilate the food that we eat.

5. Drink Warm Water

We all know drinking plenty of water is good for the wellbeing of our body. From ancient times until recent scientific studies, it has been proven that drinking warm or hot water is one of the simplest ways to improve digestion and metabolism. Warm/hot water up to 98.6 degrees accounted for 40 per cent increase in metabolism which lasted for at least 30-40 minutes of raised metabolism after consumption of warm water. Sipping warm water throughout the day can keep your metabolism high.

Overall, making these simple changes rather than counting calories, can improve metabolism as well as boost weight loss efforts. Try incorporating them into your routine and let us know how it works!

What Gestational Diabetes Can Do To You & Your Unborn Child

Gestational Diabetes

We all know about Diabetes Mellitus to some extent as Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from utilising glucose completely or partially. It is characterised by raised glucose concentration in the blood and alterations in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. But have you ever heard of Gestational Diabetes or Pregnancy Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes is a high blood sugar (glucose) condition that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth. It can happen at any stage of pregnancy, but is more common in the second or third trimester. Insulin requirements goes up one to three times in pregnancy. During normal pregnancy the level of plasma insulin is raised by the action of placental hormones thus placing a burden on the insulin secreting cells of the pancreatic islets. The pancreas may be unable to meet these demands in women genetically predisposed to develop both types of diabetes. Long term studies show that some 80% of women with gestational diabetes ultimately develop permanent clinical diabetes requiring treatment.

What Causes Gestational Diabetes?

The causes of Gestational Diabetes is not known clearly yet. Some, but not all women with gestational diabetes are found to be overweight before getting pregnant or have a family history of diabetes. It is more common in Native American, Alaskan Native, Asian and Black women, but white women may develop it due to poor lifestyle.

Are There Tests to Determine it?

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is a confirmatory test. The OGTT measures blood glucose after you fast for at least 8hours. Firstly, the blood sample is drawn in fasting state. Then, 75g of glucose dissolved in 250-300 ml of water is given, Lemon juice may be added for flavour and to prevent nausea. Then the blood specimens are collected every 30mins for 2-3 hours after the administration of glucose.

High blood glucose levels at any two or more blood test times – Fasting, 1 hour, 2 hours or 3 hours – mean you have Gestational diabetes.

Complications During Pregnancy

If blood sugar is not controlled, it can lead to problems for both maternal and foetal health. Uncontrolled diabetes during the first trimester of pregnancy increases the risk of abortions and congenital malfunctions in the foetus. Some of the major consequences are:

  • High Blood Pressure (Preeclampsia): Preeclampsia is a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure. Due to the high blood pressure levels of the mother, the protein in urine spikes up and swelling in fingers and toes and lower body persists. High blood pressure can be harmful to both – the mother and the unborn baby. It might lead to the baby being born early and also could cause seizures or a stroke (a blood clot or a bleed in the brain that can lead to brain damage) in the woman during labour or delivery.
  • An Extra Large Baby: Uncontrolled Diabetes in the mother causes the baby’s blood sugar to be high. The baby tends to “overfeed” and grows extra-large. Besides, causing discomfort to the mother, it can lead to problems during delivery causing prolonged labour pain which might need a C-section to deliver the baby. The baby can be born with nerve damage due to pressure on the shoulder during delivery.
  • Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycaemia): People with diabetes who take insulin or other medications can develop blood sugar that is too low or hypoglycaemia. Low blood sugar can be very serious and even fatal if not treated quickly.

How to Manage Gestational Diabetes

The main modes of treatment of Gestational Diabetes include:

1. Eating a Healthy Diet: Dietary measures are an essential part of the treatment of diabetic patients whether they are on diet alone or on metformin drug or insulin. Carbohydrate restriction impairs insulin sensitivity and reversed by high carbohydrate diet but it needs to be maintained between 60-65% of total calories. So include more complex carbohydrates or polysaccharides like Multi-grain flour, Oats, Muesli, Granola, Amaranth, Bajra, Ragi, Quinoa, etc. Studies have shown that raising carbohydrates does not adversely affect the fasting blood glucose levels, glucose tolerance or insulin requirements provided that total calories are not increased.

Along with carbs, include more protein-rich foods like pulses and lentils, Rajma, Soya Bean, peas, beans, peanuts, milk and dairy products like yogurt, buttermilk, paneer, eggs, chicken, etc. to ensure weight gain and prevent osteomalacia during pregnancy. Inclusion of fibre like fruits and green leafy vegetables are must as it improves glucose metabolism without increasing insulin secretion. It increases the intestinal transit-time, delay gastric emptying slow glucose absorption.

2. Drugs or Insulin Treatment: Metformin or Insulin therapy is the accepted medical management of gestational diabetes. Insulin is the first drug of choice and metformin can be considered after 20 weeks of gestation. Insulin must be taken without delay if it is suggested by the doctor.

3. Exercise: Stay Active to help keep your blood sugar under control. Exercise regularly – before, during and after pregnancy. Moderate exercise such as brisk walking for 30mins a day for 5 times a week is a good goal to set.

4. Monitoring Blood Sugar Often: Be aware that your blood sugar can change very quickly, becoming too high or too low depending on what you eat and how much you exercise and your growing baby’s blood sugar also varies several times during the day. Check your blood sugar level as often as directed by the doctor and any time you have symptoms.

By adopting these measures one can enjoy a healthy Antenatal period.

Nutrition Tips For Traveling Athletes

Nutrition Tips For Traveling Athletes

Traveling is enthralling for anyone who loves indulging in new experiences, different cuisines and sightseeing. But when you’re an athlete, traveling can be quite challenging because you need to follow a specific eating pattern and routine to meet the nutrient needs for training and competition. This involves carbs in ample quantities, proteins in moderation, fat in low quantities and adequate hydration – all of which can go haywire in a new place!

Some Challenges that Athletes Face Include:

  • Availability of healthy food options
  • Unknown food options available
  • Contaminated food and water
  • Unfavourable weather conditions
  • Jet lag

Ways to Overcome Challenges While Travelling

1. On Road Travel

  • The meals should be pre-purchased and carried for the team from reliable restaurants or stores. Foods include packaged meals, energy bars, fruits, roasted grams or peanuts, nuts, sandwiches, etc. to avoid eating food from roadside stalls.
  • Carry sufficient water to avoid dehydration and to avoid having water from outside which may be contaminated.
  • Look out for restaurants or food outlets which provide healthy food options.
  • Always practice Portion Control while on the move to avoid accumulation of excess calories in the body.

 2. Inflight Meal Planning

  • Avoid eating flight food as its high on fats and sugars leading to intake of unwanted excess calories. Rather eat healthy food which you can carry with you.
  • Hydrate yourself well by drinking adequate water and unsweetened fruit juices as jet lag can cause digestion issues.
  • Make sure to replenish stocked water once it’s over.

 3. On Arriving at the Destination

  • Get to know the place well and the food options available there. In case some foods are unknown, get to know about them in terms of the nutritional values and ingredients to make sure the food is appropriate enough to be eaten.
  • Upon reaching the destination, the coach or the team manager should do a detailed research for suitable restaurants and grocery stores.
  • Athletes should include healthy foods such as whole grains, pulses, vegetables, fruits and lean meat for optimum nutrition.
  • Ask how many times you might be eating out during the stay.
  • Eat only when hungry and stop when full. In other words practise mindful eating.
  • Check for availability of sports supplementing foods in the stores around.
  • Try and have only bottled water to avoid water borne diseases like typhoid or diarrhoea and use the same for drinking and washing fruits or vegetables before consumption and if possible, even for brushing teeth. Also try and avoid ice cubes.
  • Always consume whole fruits and vegetables that can be peeled. Avoid consuming fruit juices as contaminated water and ice cubes may be used.

 4. Before the Competition Begins

  • Make sure to have a good pre-workout snack 30 minutes before the competition starts. Include carbohydrates, proteins and low fats.
  • Try and have a good post workout meal within 30 minutes of the competition like whey protein.
  • Space your meals accordingly and appropriately before the competition starts. Don’t stuff your stomach before the competition starts.
  • Consume branded bottled water before the competition.

Athletes may stay in a normal hotel or even fully equipped suites. They may face challenges as optimum nutrition supports their performance. Hence, pre-planning or an intelligent strategy to overcome the above mentioned challenges may prevent hindrances faced by an athlete and help them perform at their best!

Can’t Lose Weight? Try This Awesome Routine!

intermittent fastingIt’s true that you can summit any mountain given you have the fortitude, mental strength and willpower. But more often than not, we come across weight loss struggles that no treadmill or fad diet in the world can solve. While you hack and plough your way through every routine your trainer throws at you with little or no results, your ideal weight seems that much farther from you. If you can’t lose weight, the answer doesn’t lie in pushing yourself to extremes. The answer, in fact, is quite simple. Two words: Intermittent Fasting!

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting simply means fasting for 15-16 hours post your dinner before breaking the fast with breakfast. If you are currently fasting for 12 hours post-dinner, then gradually increase it to 13 hours the first week and then 14 for the following to reach up to 16 hours of fasting time.

If you feel hungry, wait it out. Drink a large glass of water and distract yourself with something non-food related. You can make this more effective for weight loss by keeping a gap of a minimum of 4 hours between each meal, ensuring you start each meal with protein-rich foods. So ideally, you can have a breakfast of nuts, fruits and cereals at 10am, followed by lunch at 2pm which includes beans/pulses with rice/roti and a fresh vegetable salad. You can opt for egg, meat or fish too. Dinner can be had around 6pm with a vegetable or chicken soup with bread sticks.

How Does Intermittent Fasting Help You Lose Weight?

When you follow Intermittent Fasting with a 4-4-16 hour gap, you give insulin time to leave your body. Without energy from food, the body turns to your fat cells and the free fatty acids stored inside them for energy resource.

How to Break the Fast?

Eating protein as the first part of your meal, followed by complex carbohydrates, and finally any simple carbs allows proper utilisation of insulin. Eating in this order will help you get back into your Fat-Burning Zone much more quickly enabling you to lose weight effectively. This means you can begin your breakfast with some soaked nuts to grab on to proteins. You can opt for dairy or eggs depending on your food preferences too. Then include complex carbohydrates with fresh fiber rich fruits or vegetables followed by breakfast cereals that tend to be loaded with simple carbohydrates.

For optimal benefit, combine Intermittent Fasting with good quality sleep, proper stress management and moderate exercise routine. To learn more awesome ways to lose weight, check out some weight loss classes by experts on GOQii Play within the GOQii App.

Have you tried Intermittent Fasting before? A word of caution, please consult your doctor, nutritionist or dietician before attempting it. Was this article helpful? Let us know in the comments below!
